Title: Christmas Bookbub
Post by: Mimsy on November 21, 2018, 02:51:45 pm
Has anyone ever got a BookBub deal that ran over the Christmas holidays? If so, were sales better or worse than at other times of year? I have a Christmas novel that I was thinking of submitting for a deal over the holiday, but don't want to waste it if the returns at this time of year are generally lackluster.

Also interested in this. My fantasy novel just got a US and International Bookbub for the 23rd of December - I was kind of wondering if the results would be depressed because folks are distracted because of the holidays, or if they might be more willing to grab a distraction to fill some free holiday time. Anyone who gets regular Bookbubs have any experiences to share?

Also, for those who are interested, the key to getting the Bookbub was offering to remove it from KU. I've always been Amazon exclusive, and Bookbub has always rejected me. To see what would happen I applied for the Bookbub just before my KU term expired (on the 23rd of November) and told them I would go wide until the Bookbub went off if I got it, and they said yes. As I said I'm scheduled for the 23rd of December, so I get to try being wide for a month. I think I'll probably come out behind money-wise by not being in KU for a month, but it will be fun to shake things up and Bookbub seems like a rite of passage and I'd like to say I've gotten one.

I look forward to hearing how your BookBub deal goes!

I'll be sure to report back here. Maybe my results will prove useful to folks who come here with a similar question in the future. Though since this is my first I won't have any context to know whether it was a decent run or not.

I've managed a few titles that had feature ads in the week before and after Christmas. It's like any other ad time, so it can be amazingly good or kinda (comparatively) meh. We had a title one year hang in the overall Top 100 for 2 months after its 99 cent BB Christmas-time feature. Year before last, on Dec 28, we had weirdly lackluster immediate sell-through (again, comparatively speaking -- it was still good sell-through) for a freebie whose series had seen gangbuster sales during every other promo before or after. Those were the extremes from the probably 10 or so titles we ran at Christmas-time as BB features over the years. Everything else fell in as about par with the average against other times of the year. That's over...hmm, I never counted the exact number of BB feature ads I managed, but it was probably around 100.

Specifically for a Christmas novel, we had one that ran as a BB feature, but it ran in late November. It was PNR/Contemporary Romance, plus it had an exclusive bonus short story by Debbie Macomber in her popular 'Shirley, Goodness and Mercy' series, so not a good compare with most indie Christmas titles. ;)
