Writers' Cafe / Re: On Police Procedurals...
« on: February 02, 2020, 09:31:09 am »
My first was a procedural. It is my best selling, but still has only just cracked 4 figures after that many years on the market, if that helps. Not for lack of trying, either. It was reviewed in the largest newspaper in my state and has been well received by most who read it. I would wager that the target audience is more keen to stick with the big guys in the genre. Of course, that has just been my experience. I still enjoyed writing it and that is ultimately why I do it.

I think you are much better off finding and joining other promos on Story Origins within your genre. Do a search there for Reader Magnet promos. They are free too!

Yes. I do a section break at the end of the chapter text, then go to the top of the next page, the one you want to remain blank, and add a page break. Might not be technically right, but it has always worked for me. Good luck. Formatting is my least favorite part of self publishing.

Writers' Cafe / Re: Using/Managing ACX Promo Codes

I believe my murder mystery was in the same Bookboom as your book. I only had 25 US requests, but got 5 reviews. Gave away only one UK code and she posted a review already too. The last one i did yielded many more code requests, but i only got 3 reviews in total.

That is the old process, made easier by going to the urls you posted in the first message specifically for redeeming promo codes.

Wondering if you did not get automatically reenrolled after your three month period ended. There is a box to uncheck to not be auto enrolled. I would look in your dashboard by clicking on promote and advertise and then click manage kdp select enrollment.

Writers' Cafe / Re: Psychological thriller blurb help, please!

Hi Jody,

I enjoy psychological thrillers. But your blurb, as it stands, doesn't feel that way to me. It's not clear what the thriller element is -- to me it reads more like a journey of discovery, or the challenges of a person who is losing their mind (or something of that sort). It appears the premise is compelling, but the idea that she needs to "talk to the person" who killed her family makes it sound like this is a gentle "let's sit and talk" kind of thing.

I'm sure you have an interesting underlying plot, but the blurb as it stands doesn't feel "thrilling" to me, maybe that's why people aren't buying?

Thank you! I see what you mean. Exactly the kind of insight I was looking for. I will work on it some more.

Writers' Cafe / Psychological thriller blurb help, please!

Hi all.
Wondering if people could look at this for me. The first book in my thriller series Imperfect Memories is not selling well. I have decided to rework the blurb before I run some new ads and I was hoping for some feedback before I put it up. A couple of questions: Is it too short. Does it need more specifics. I am open to any thoughts. Thanks in advanced.

After losing her husband and daughter in a bombing, Nina Rogers thinks she might also be losing her mind. The thing is, up until now, sheís had a near perfect mind. She has a condition known as hyperthymesia. She recalls every day of her life. At least she did. It appears the tragedy has unraveled something in her. As her memory begins to deteriorate, she decides to talk to the man who killed her family. Thatís when she realizes they have something very important in common.

My Scout reject is free for the next few days. I would love for you to check it out.

Thank you for the prep talk :) All great advice! I definitely have no expectations of getting rich, Id just like to break even and get my stuff out there. I guess I just thought it would get easier with each release, not harder! Anyway...I have a few shorts coming out in various publications in the next few months so Im hoping that will drum up a few customers. I will keep checking back here for continued good advice!

Iím feeling a bit negative at the moment, so this might be overly pessimistic but hereís my story. I self-pubbed my Kindle Scout reject about a month ago. I have two other straight-ahead mysteries. Imperfect Memories is a Psycholgical Thriller. I did a 30 day Netgalley Coop on it and it got 7 very nice reviews (3-5star, 2-4star, 2-3star ratings. You can read them here Only 1 of them posted to Amazon and a few to Goodreads. I had about 3K pageviews on my Scout Campaign. When I released, I put the book on sale for .99 and emailed that group. I think I had 6 sales total. People can get free books at every turn now so they donít want to pay even .99 cents it seems. I have been rejected for almost every ad Iíve tried to get because I only have 3 Amazon reviews currently. I did run a few though, and Iíve got an AMS ad running now that can barely get any impressions on and it currently has no clicks. Admittedly, I dislike marketing and obviously I stink at it, but Iíve tried blog posts, twitter, giveaways, yada yada. I decided this Thriller needed to be part of a series as that seems to be the key, but Iím not feeling super motivated to work on Book2 given how poorly I feel sales are going for Book1. I probably just need to be more patient but it seems to me that usually most sales come within the first few months so I think Iíve all ready crashed and burned. It did not feel quite as hard for the first few releases.

Writers' Cafe / Re: Best way to advertise for KU?

This is an interesting question! Iím following. I recently did some tweeting basically saying that my new release was in KU and used the few hashtags I could find that made sense. It didnít do anything. Iíve had the lowest amount of page reads ever for a new release. Iíve also been running AMS ads and I can barely get any impressions. Itís rough out there.

Hi there,
First time poster here! I had a book in KS a few months back and I didnít find this board until I was in the waiting room. I wish I had found it sooner because this is such a great group and now I find myself continuing to lurk. Anyway, I do have a question. I finished my campaign with around 3K views and about a quarter of the time on the H&T and did not get any feedback, which was a bummer because it was the main reason I took the plunge. After my rejection, I took a bit of time to lick my wounds, made a few changes to the manuscrupt, and had my editor take another pass. Then I decided to wait for the 30 day period to end so I could get a few reviews and put the book on sale for .99. Today is the day I was planning to now hit the button to notify those who nominated me, but itís gone. Is there a time limit? I went back to the email they sent and they donít mention one. Ugh. I sent KS a message, but Iím doubtful Iíll get a reply. So I kinda blew it, I guess. No feedback and no list. Double Ugh.
