I subscribe to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review newspaper.
I look forward to reading it every morning.
Haven't read much else lately, though.
Been pretty busy with work and school activities with my sons. :)

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Reading Kindle Books on an iPod
« on: June 03, 2010, 09:10:51 am »
I have the Kindle app on my iPod Touch as a backup to my Kindle, just in case I would forget it or its battery ran out.
I haven't used the Kindle app for reading yet, though.
Have you tried the Kindle for PC?
And I agree that you gotta get a Kindle soon!  :)

Kindle Accessories / Re: Where to buy a clear skin?

I was also going to suggest the plain white from DecalGirl.
You can also get custom skins from DecalGirl, although I've never ordered a custom one myself as there are way too many instock choices to chose from as it is. ;)

New Kindle in da house!  Woohoo!!!
My DH called me at work this afternoon to let me know that the UPS guy had just dropped off my replacement Kindle.
My boys had it sitting on the arm of my favorite chair waiting for me when I got home from work. :)
I ordered a replacement DecalGirl Skin "Violet Tranquility"...the same one I have on my Kindle that broke.
Woohoo for Amazon customer service!!
They rock!!!

Thanks for keeping us updated; it's nice to know you got such a great resolution.
Also, i really learned something about cracking; didn't realize you wouldn't be able to see it (I mean as anything but odd horizontal lines). ???

Not only do I have the weird horizontal lines, I have the diagonal partial screen saver as well.
I'm thinking that if it is indeed cracked, it must be cracked on the diagonal line that the screen saver falls on.
I'm also happy to know that you won't necessarily notice that the screen is cracked.
Must be extra careful with it now, even though I thought I was being careful to begin with.
I was just thinking this morning that if it's so prone to getting cracked, one would think that it would be packaged better in shipping.
And if Amazon truly believes that over-charging the battery is causing it problems, there should be a warning in its instruction manual about it.
Don'tcha think?

I really, really do. All it takes is a heavy pinpoint pressure. The screen has a very thin piece of glass underneath, and if something somewhat heavy is place against it, it will crack. You cannot see it through the plastic, but if you open it up, it's obvious.

For instance, you have it in a travel bag, you are walking in the airport, and some pud with a heavy carryon bumps into your bag. Not your fault. You get on the plane, take your Kindle out of your carry-on to read for the next three hour flight, and your screen is full of lines and you think the x-ray perhaps broke it. But no, it was that quick whack from the other passenger.

I charge mine overnight all the time; so do lots of our members. It is very odd that they are claiming that might be an issue, but if they are willing to replace them based on this fallacy, it's better for those with broken Kindles.

OK, thanks. :)
I'll be extra careful with the replacement.

^^^ Your description sounds like a cracked screen. This excuse of overcharging that they have been giving out lately is nonsense.

You really think the screen is cracked?  ...just wondering, not being obnoxious here. ;)
I've been extremely careful with it, it's always in its Oberon cover and I carry it around in a padded Borsa Bella bag.
I've only dropped it once, and even then it was in a padded M-Edge Go! cover and only just slipped off my ottoman and onto carpeting...that was around 3 months ago.
My boys know better than to even go near my Kindle. LOL!!
I will admit to just allowing it to charge overnight a couple of times.
This weird screen is the first this has happened.

Maybe, maybe not. Since the glass is on the inside, under the plastic screen, it is difficult to tell if it is cracked. If you can post a picture, I can tell you for sure.

I just talked to an Amazon customer service rep, and they're sending me a new Kindle overnight UPS.
I'll have it in my hands tomorrow afternoon.

Anyhoo, I can tell you what the screen looks like...
Starting in the upper right-hand corner there is a triangle of black lines.
Going diagonal from there, there are more black lines and the screen saver of "James Joyce" is stuck from about mid-way down.
I can also still read the "slide and hold power switch to wake" notation at the bottom of the screen.

The rep did tell me that another cause of the problem I'm experiencing, is overcharging, or keeping the cord plugged into the wall outlet for too long after the Kindle has charged.

It's good to know that you've gotten a replacement.
I'm having sort of the same problem with mine.
I have lots of dark gray/black lines and a partial screen saver stuck on mine.
I haven't dropped it and the screen isn't cracked.
I contacted Amazon earlier this afternoon and am anxiously awaiting a reply.
Hoping for the best.

The Shower Clouds Travel Bag...

I already have one of her regular ereader bags, which I love.  It's great in my purse, but often find myself needing something smaller to take with me just for my kindle plus a few extra necessities.  Very excited!

Oooh congrats!
I have that exact bag and love it!
I use the outter pocket for my iPod and phone.
Works great!

I'd go with the Forest or the Trees (ha!) in dark green.
I personally have a Tree of Life in saddle and love it! :)

Kindle Accessories / Re: to skin or not to skin?
« on: May 16, 2010, 07:12:41 am »
I've had my Kindle 2 since Christmas and it's still pretty much naked.
So, I'm thinking about skins and I have a few questions

Do you think skins are a must?  Reading the boards here seems to indicate it's unusual not to have one
Do you find the pattern distracting when you're reading the Kindle?
Are they easy to remove when you're bored and want to try something else?
Is matte really better than glossy?

No, I don't think that skins are a "must", but they are great for individualizing your Kindle and making it really pretty.
I don't find the colors/patterns distracting at all.
They're really easy to put on/take off...I'm on my third one as we speak. I've only bought glossy finish skins, so I can't comment on which one might be better between glossy/matte.  Guess it's more of a personal decision/opinion than anything else.  Once you get started on skins, you'll get addicted to them. LOL!

The only time I listen to music with mine is in the vehicle.
Other than that, I listen to podcasts, check email, play games, check blogs I subscribe to, make sticky notes when needed, note stuff on the calendar, etc.
There are even apps. for retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, etc. and you can purchase stuff directly with your iPod!
So yeah, an iPod Touch is an awesome choice even if you don't listen to much music.
Go for it!

Apparently, your iPad didn't like you "tugging" on it.
Be more gentle next time. :P

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Had someone recognize my Kindle today.
« on: May 14, 2010, 01:57:00 am »
I've only had one person recognize it for a Kindle specifically, and that's a coworker who wants one badly. LOL!
Everyone else who has seen it just asks "Is that one of those ereader things?"
From there, I can usually start my personal selling speel. :P

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: kindle pricing
« on: May 13, 2010, 08:36:40 am »
My Kindle has been worth every cent my husband paid for it (my best ever Christmas present)  It would have been around the $300 mark after dollar conversion and shipping costs to Australia.  I have read over 40 books since Xmas, and paid about $20 all up.  40 paperbacks could have cost me $1200 or more.

I donít know how many of you are aware of book prices in Australia, but the Ďaverageí price for a paperback is now around $30. Hardcovers are between $50 -$60.

Recently, I picked up Dragon Haven by Robin Hobb, noticed the price was $36.99 and promptly put it back down again.  (To add insult to injury, the e-book is not available to Australia! )

You've definitely gotten your money's worth out of your Kindle.
Happy Reading! :)

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Kindle froze
« on: May 13, 2010, 08:33:12 am »
My Kindle froze up on me a month or so ago.
It wouldn't do anything, and I had to hold the slider switch to the "off" posistion for 20 seconds or so to get it to completely reboot.
It's been fine since then, though.
I *did* read on the Kindle support page that the most common reason for freezing up is a low battery, so I've made a conscious effort to keep it charged as fully as possible, especially since I always keep my Whispernet on.
Goofy ol' me, I guess. :D

I've never seen anyone IRL with a Kindle, but I'm sure I'd be ecstatic and comparing book lists and such. :)

I voted for "home", but in order:

1. home
2. work
3. waiting during my sons' sporting practices/events
4. "miscellaneous", Dr. appts.

Clever recyling!
I love finding new uses for stuff that would otherwise end up in the trash somewhere.

I asked for, and got, a new deck for my van. My old one didn't have an aux input plug so I couldn't plug in my iPod, Pre or Kindle (for text to speech) while I'm driving. I finished listening to an audible book while driving over the weekend (he installed it last week).

I got coupons (remember those?) from my kids. My favorite is one from my 7 year old that she hand wrote... it says "do not complain"

I had just won a $125 Amazon gift card so didn't ask for that. My Kindle has a pretty plum skin, purple m-edge cover and the e-luminator light. I couldn't think of anything I wanted for it! *laughing*

LOVE the "DO NOT COMPLAIN" coupon your 7-year-old gave you! LOL!
It's a wonder I didn't get something like that from my boys, who are 8 & 12.
As for the Amazon gift certificate, I'd put it towards an iPad, since there's nothing "Kindle" you want right now. ;)

Oh no!
So sorry to hear that you lost your Kindle.
I'm really hoping that someone has found it and turned it in.
Most people are decent and attempt to find the rightful owners of things. :)

Thank you both for your replies. I have had a look at the PDF manuals and my Kindle is different to the one in the manuals also where you say the Aa key is i have a left arrow key! Just have to muddle through some how!!

Do you have a button anywhere that has "Aa" on it?
That's the button you need to change your font sizes.

i'm using the PC version of the kindle software on my netbook to read books dwnloaded from Amazon. Needless to say, the situation is not ideal...but the price for the actual device is just too large....$300 and up! To my mind, it really doesn't make sense unless the get it down to $150 or lower...any thoughts?

Hmmm....the K2 is $259, not $300.
See here:
In MY mind, worth every penny, as I'm sure most everyone else here would agree, but if not, that's ok too. :)

I gave my mom the whole Blossom Street Series by Debbie Macomber.    I didn't get anything for my kindle.   I got to spend time with my son playing games and then they took me out for Chinese.   I loved it.

Debbie Macomber is my favorite author!
Love the Blossom Street series.
Happy to hear you got to spend time with your family. :)
