After a year of absolutely no promotion, I started a 3 day free promotion of Blank Slate topping out at #37 on the Free list. It looks like there's a nice bounce now that I'm back on the Paid list...

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #11,488 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
#8 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Literature & Fiction > Genre Fiction > Sea Adventures
#8 in Books > Literature & Fiction > Genre Fiction > Sea Adventures
#90 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Literature & Fiction > Genre Fiction > Men's Adventure

Good month so far- up to around 696 total on Amazon...A couple of hundred of those were at .99- That short experiment completely reinforced my belief that .99 is a losing proposition for most writers...:)

It's a very different animal over there...If your book is priced at $2.99- forget about it! I think I sold 3 books this month at that price. Yesterday, I dropped my price to .99 and tied it into a Kindle Giveaway and I hit #2 on the Movers and Shakers list going from 50,100 to 158 ...

BTW- to hit a 158 ranking took 42 books for the day...

You'll find some nice people, but the kinds of promotions we take for granted in the US simply don't play well there...Different set of rules... (There are times I'm tempted to explain the concept that "some forms of advert simply are not proper" would probably have amused Willie Shakespeare at the Globe Theater where they used to have bear baiting on Tuesdays to attract a crowd...)

Have a great day...

I'm not sure of the answers- I do know that at $2.99, if you have a half dozen books ranked in the top 4,000, you're making a reasonable amount of money- just a guess would be 350 books per month per title x 6= 2,100 books and $4,200. The odds of selling 12,600 books to make the same money are much slimmer...

I've stayed at $2.99 and spend 20% of the revenue on Kindle Giveaways and paid promotion. Since getting off to a rousing start with 3 sales in June, I hit 685 last month with a genre that typically doesn't rock the world on Kindle.

I'll just keep plugging...and keep writing...

The bigger question is not just how to price and promote on Amazon, but how to promote on B&N and Apple...I'm at a loss on those two...

Thanks,
Zack

A question from one of the youngsters here (er, young in terms of epublishing days): has Amazon ever disclosed how tags fit into the overall weight of things? I suppose it's a given that sales figures are the prime component of their algorithm, followed by...? Tags? Reviews? Something else mysterious that only Jeff Bezos knows about? I guess I'm basically saying that the whole thing still confuses me.

Christopher- tagged both of yours...

If you dream big...and do what it takes to achieve that dream you MIGHT succeed.

If you have no dream and expect to fail, you will achieve that goal.

I love to see the numbers, because that shows me what is possible...

I sold 98 books yesterday- a new personal best...that was more than I sold in the entire month of July.

The advice, critique, and inspiration from folks on this board is what helped me to get this far....

A new 1 day record for Crescent Rising and Blank Slate - 98 books sold in 24 hours...It was a combination of the KND sponsorship and a Kindle WiFi Giveaway I've been running all month...

I like it!!

The best part is that it looks like you raised your prices compared to last month and still kicked it!

12/20:      2251- 12sold      3167- 7sold            Daily Total- 19

12/21:     1455-  18 sold     3125- 8sold  12:00
              1151-  25 sold     2023- 10sold 1:00
               887-  33 sold     2023- 11sold 2:00
               764-  37 sold     1898- 13 sold 3:00
               559-  41sold      1841-14 sold 5:00
               641-  51 sold     2084- 17 sold- 8:00
               611- 63 sold      2000- 21sold- 11:00    84 sold so far today!!!!
               745-73 sold      2281- 25sold- 8am      98 sold over 24 hour period

This was interesting- It ended up being 5 times my daily average and even though the ad was geared toward Crescent Rising, sales of Blank Slate were increased as well..
My best results with KND to date.

I think a couple of things helped- I have more reviews than I did before. The Kindle WiFi Giveaway that I've been running all month also helped the results.

Total sales for the month to date are at 440 compared to 435 for all of November. Should end up at 650-700 for the month....

Thanks,
Zack

Well, I'm off and rolling on my KND sponsorship. I'm actually double dipping because My Kindle WiFi Giveaway is running at the same time...And it seems like both books are moving well...

Well, you know, Zack, whenever I think of you wasting away on that yacht in the Gulf, my heart goes out to you and I just try to go the extra mile....

Hey, I'm thinking about taking Dolce Vita on a 30 day sail to Italy next year- I'll pre-buy 30 days of advertising on KND and end up in the top 50 by the time I hit Sorrento...(The only downside is I get seasick when I try to write on a boat...:)
