I ordered the $35 current deal from the link in Betsy the Quilter's post. Mostly I need it to keep my phone charged when traveling, but I'm sure it will come in handy for my Fire HD too. The reviews on Amazon were very good, but I bailed on Amazon and went with Daily Steals for the $15 dollars. I could invest that in books, and I'm not in a huge hurry for it. I'll chime in again when it arrives.

Fire Talk / Organizing books on the Fire HD
« on: January 07, 2013, 12:05:03 pm »
Has anyone found a way to organize your books on the Fire HD? I share an account with my mom and between us we have over 400 books on the cloud. We mostly share the account so I can buy and download books for her, and we share books only occasionally. I keep forgetting about books I've purchased and mean to read. Also samples I intend to purchase later. Is there any way to create folders like you can on the Kindle readers? Anything short of keeping a written list somewhere? Thanks as always for your help and the collected wisdom of this group!

THANK YOU!!! I've avoided buying cookbooks because of the time-out factor. This is exactly what I needed to know...and the reason I keep hanging out here. You folks are the best!

Does anyone know of a way to stop the screen on the Fire HD from timing out and turning off after a period of inactivity? It's a useful feature most of the time, but very annoying when trying to use a cookbook. I'd like to have the option of adjusting that feature as I wish. As always...thanks!

It's not compatible with all the 8.9 HD's - won't download to my husband's. Maybe just the 8.9 with 4G? He has the wi-fi only version. Very strange, but I suspect it will catch up to all of them eventually.

Jesslyn, thanks for the offer, but I think I'll hold off for now. Ann and Betsy, thanks too for the info and advice. Both my husband and I have the lower level HD's, although he opted for 32G of memory. I'm betting that it won't be too long before Eprint works on all the Fire HD's. It's been my experience that a lot of the developers end up playing catch-up when a new device comes out. If not, I'll think about the alternatives. We have an assortment of other machines in the house, so I can find a way to print.

I clicked your link to confirm, and that's the app I own. It shows the "you purchased..." line. Both my Android phone and my Fire HD show in the devices area, but the Fire HD has the red not-allowed mark beside it. So how did you get Amazon to let you do this? Did you do the setup on the HP site before downloading the app? BTW, I have a 7" HD Fire, and my husband just got the big one for an early Christmas present. We are both able to print from our phones, but neither of us can load the app on our Fire HDs. Anybody got an idea as to why?

Anybody know of a good printer app - free or cheap would be good - that works with the Fire HD? I have HP Eprint on my phone, but I can't download it to the Fire HD. The only one that Amazon shows got poor reviews. I'm going to email Amazon about this and hope the developers catch up. It has happened with a couple of apps already. But in the meantime, suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!

Fire Talk / Re: Kindle Fire HD Software Update Coming Soon!
« on: October 24, 2012, 01:25:12 pm »
The update is on the website now. I just downloaded and installed it manually. They have a wireless sync download method, but I couldn't get it to work for me. Guessing the server is busy. The ability to turn off the suggestions line under the carousel is included in the update, which I am very pleased about. I've already turned it off. I could be wrong, but the screen looks even sharper after the update. That could be in contrast to my laptop, which has a really dirty screen. Should probably do something about that.  :) No problems with the installation, but the download is not fast.

Fire Talk / Another music question
« on: October 16, 2012, 12:01:36 pm »
Apologies in advance if this question has already been answered. I looked briefly and didn't find it.
I have all my music on my desktop in iTunes. I've been converting cd's, downloading them to my iTouch, and loading them via copy/paste to my Android phone. I don't want to mess with the cloud thing at Amazon. Can I hook up my Fire HD to my desktop and do the same copy/paste thing as I did with the phone?

It works great with the phone. All the album info comes across. Just curious - I've got so music on so many devices now that I don't really need to put it on the Fire.

Fire Talk / Re: Huh ... $199 Kindle Fire HD No Longer Available?

Amazon is now showing it available with or without special offers. Updating page maybe?'s OK now.

Fire Talk / Re: Overdrive/epub app now available at Amazon for Free
« on: October 16, 2012, 11:49:45 am »
Of course this came out right after I figured out how to sideload it from Overdrive itself! However, the experience was educational, so it wasn't wasted. I did unload the original and install Amazon's version. Discovered that the epub library book I was reading was just really badly formatted, not that there was a software incompatibility. I'm pretty mellow when it's free, so I didn't complain to anyone, but I would have been demanding my money back if I'd paid for it. It's a shame really, because this was a new book from a mainstream publishing house. Even with their prejudice against ebooks, they should have been embarrassed to send something out in that condition.

You can't go wrong with the Amazon case for the Fire HD. They really put some thought into the case design so that it doesn't enlarge the footprint but still gives good protection. I was a little dubious initially about how well it would stand up for hands-free viewing, but it works very well. Nice choice of colors, although I wish it came in red. Highly recommended!

Sorry, but I'm no help with the photo/camera software. Would like to know if a good one is available.

Fire Talk / Re: Regarding problems with your Kindle Fire and KFHD

If we are talking about rebooting the Fire HD, I find I'm doing that more often than I did with the original Fire. I can live with it if it's not a sign of something Gone Terribly Wrong.  :) I was traveling over the weekend without my laptop, so I was doing more surfing than I usually do on the HD. I ended up rebooting a couple of times when things got sluggish. Honestly though, I think a large part of the sluggishness was the wifi at the motel. At some points, it slowed to a speed best described as glacial. Since this occurred in the evening, I figured someone was streaming video. It speeded back up later on. In the meantime, I just read a good book (on the HD, of course). I'm liking this little thing a whole lot.

Well, n4uau, I don't think I did much more than I would have done on any device. The problem was that I didn't know how to do it. You still have to download and install Overdrive to use it. The file server is a useful tool for other purposes, and it was free on Amazon. I have no vested interest in anyone owning a Fire HD, but I think it is an excellent device, and I'm enjoying mine very much. Most of the Android apps download just like on any other tablet, and there are more apps available at Amazon than I will ever need or use. Differing opinions is why there are so many choices of tablets out there, of course, and a person has to make his or her own choice in these things.

Thanks very much, everyone! I got ES File Server and Overdrive installed with no problems, and Free Library of Philadelphia let me download the book again to my Fire. Found the chapter I was reading, and I am GOOD to GO!!

I don't post often, although I drop by regularly, but I do want you all to know that this community is very much appreciated. You're the best!

Still no sign of ES File Explorer on my Fire HD. Guess I'll go do something else until it shows up. This has happened before, so I'll give it some time.

Fire Talk / Re: Epub library books on Fire HD?

Thanks for the good info! I just bought ES File Explorer. I'll install it as soon as I can persuade the Fire HD that I really own it. It shows up on my phone list, but hasn't appeared on the Fire list. I'm currently rebooting.

2 more questions: When downloading an epub library book, do you have to download with the USB cable? If so, where do you put the book? And what is an ADE ID, and where do I get one? (OK...4 questions, but enquiring minds need to know these things.  :) )

I can download the Overdrive app directly from Overdrive, but my HD won't open it to install. I've done that twice and deleted it. None of the reader apps (bluefire, Overdrive, etc.) is listed as compatible with the Fire HD on Amazon, although the Amazon app store carries all of them and will load them gladly on my Android phone.

Non-Amazon apps on Kindle is a new world to me. Maybe I'll just finish this book on the laptop. This is the first book I've come across that isn't listed in all the formats. Still can't see why. The process of making it all work may take longer than finishing the book.  :) Many thanks to all of you for your help!

Fire Talk / Epub library books on Fire HD?
« on: October 04, 2012, 08:25:38 am »
For some reason, the library only has the epub version of a book I wanted to read. I went ahead and checked it out, and I'm currently reading it on my laptop. I'd prefer to put it on my Fire HD, but I couldn't get the Overdrive software file to open for installation. Has anyone tried epubs on the HD yet? Any suggestions for software, etc., that doesn't require voiding warranties or removing DRM? Someone posted earlier that Overdrive worked on the original Fire. Did I miss something in the download/installation process?

Fire Talk / Re: Problem with Tunein Radio Pro
« on: October 01, 2012, 07:51:43 am »
Turning the Fire off was the second thing I tried, after checking to be sure I was in the right screen. However, it must have been an Amazon thing because when I checked recently, it downloaded just like it should. I had run out of things to try and hadn't had a chance to contact Amazon yet, so I'm guessing the problem was on their end.

Thanks for your help! I always know where to turn with a question or problem.

Believe me, I've checked both screens multiple times. Not there on my Fire HD. Funny thing is that the HD doesn't seem to recognize that I bought it. When you've bought something already, the app store offers you the option to open, not buy. That's what it does with the free version. The Pro version shows the price. I tried removing the free version in case there was a conflict. That doesn't do it either. It's a puzzlement. Not hugely important I suppose - evidently all the Pro version does is allow you to record. Any further suggestions would be welcome. I suppose I could be a really big spender and blow another $.25, but it's the principle of the thing. If it continues to bother me, I'll ask Amazon.

Fire Talk / Problem with Tunein Radio Pro
« on: September 29, 2012, 06:41:26 pm »
I bought Tunein Radio Pro today since it is only $.25. Amazon says I bought it, and it shows up in the list of available apps for my Android phone. Problem is that I can't get it to show up on the app list for my Fire HD. Amazon says it is compatible, but it sure isn't acting like it. Anybody else buy it? Can you get it to work? The non-Pro version seems to work fine. I'm only out $.25, so it isn't a big thing, but it always bugs me when something doesn't do what it's supposed to do. I've rebooted and done all the usual things. Suggestions?

Fire Talk / Re: Wallpapers on KFHD7"?
« on: September 28, 2012, 10:49:00 am »
I don't know if they are exactly the same images as the wallpaper on the original, but they are definitely the same idea - beautiful close-up photographs. The images really "pop" in HD. I may have lasted longer than 15 minutes with the special offers, but not much longer. :-) I was hoping to get rid of the "customers also bought," which I find really annoying. Since I understand that opinions differ about them, I'm pleased that Amazon will offer getting rid of them as an option. That way we can all be happy.

I have Comcast, Yahoo and Gmail on my Fire HD, and I had all 3 of them working on the original Fire too. No real problems with any of them, although Comcast can get a little funky sometimes. It sometimes is on my Android phone too. Don't know why. I use the Enhanced Email prorgram since they offered it free at Amazon, but the email that came with the units works fine.
