I use voice view for text to speech almost daily on my Paperwhite. I love it! Go to the help section about it to learn how to use it.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Pages

It is a problem with dragonfly in amber. I have it for kindle and just finished rereading it last week and it was at page 148 the whole time. I remember that happening the other three times I've read that book as well.
The whole book is there, but it doesn't have correct page count.

Amazon is incredibly inconsistent. They told me no on ad removal or partial refund and the one I talked to was fairly rude about it. [emoji1745]‍[emoji3601]

I wanted this PW4 for the text to speech (voice view) and the waterproof part for summer. I still like my voyage best, but I've been keeping the Voyage by my bed and I use the PW4 during the day.

I considered selling the Voyage, but I don't feel I'd get the $$ I'd want for it, so I'll just use it as a bedside reader.

I thought Iíd enjoy reading this Kindle without a cover, but I donít. I liked it with the voyage, but I think thatís because of the curve on the back. Do they make cases that are just for the back? Iíd like to bulk up the Kindle a little for holding, but I donít want an open/shut cover.

Unless itís a cover that the front magnets completely to the back when opened. I donít like the front flapping when I hold it open.

Is yours a Paperwhite, gaidinsgirl?  Mine is an Oasis.  I wonder if they've pulled it only for PWs in light of the response Nikkidog got from Amazon....

Mine in the picture is the new Paperwhite.

Mine had showed update grayed out too at first. It was weird because I checked it and it was grayed out, I turned on home screen view and then as soon as I went back a page on the menu I was able to click update.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Glare issues

The only time I have had a glare was when I was sitting directly in front of an open window. I tilted it a bit and it was fine.

The smudges though. Ugh. I have a Voyage and I never noticed so many on it. I feel like Iím continuously wiping smudges off this one.

If you like sleeves, this one (previous version) fits the new Paperwhite. Itís snug but loosens just enough after a couple times taking the Kindle out.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: PW4 Features
« on: November 08, 2018, 03:39:52 am »
My PW4 is still on firmware version 5.10.0.1 and hasn't updated to 5.10.1.2 - so it's not even got the new font setting options that I have on my Voyager which has 5.10.1.1.

It's not exactly helping me to feel as though I have some super duper new Kindle.  :(

No idea how long I'll have to wait for the update since I always do mine manually - but the page with the update link on it has now been removed - they must've gone live before the download was actually available.  ???

This is my situation too. I keep hoping it will auto download, but it hasnít. I really liked the battery percent on my voyage with the update, and Iím missing it on the new PW.

Yay! Mine is here. The package is definitely more minimalist than my last kindle (voyage). I did not have to sign for it. Iím excited to play.

Oh no. The 7th already feels like years away. [emoji23] I hope I don't see one of the emails. [emoji1696] I donít need a new one either. I have been happy with my Voyage, but I really want this one anyway.

Mine just starts reading the moment I open the book with the double tap. I didn't have to swipe.

I guess its different when you turn it on when you are already in the book? I haven't tested that. I turned it on from home page and then opened it.
Interesting. Iím using my husbands basic Kindle and it never starts until I swipe and then to stop it I just touch the page anywhere.

I was able to pair (only with jabra since it doesnt pair with powerbeats) but now it looks like the only option is to read a word at a time.  how does it read a page?
Once you have voice view on and the book open, you swipe diagonally down the whole page and it will begin reading it.

While i do have BT earphones, I only use them for music, so I haven't tried the new voice view.  Is it better than the old TTS (as it relates to the computerized male/female narrator)?

Itís better than it used to be. I enjoy it well enough when I use it. I donít mind the clunkiness because the text to speech is valuable to me.

You can switch between the audiobook and the ebook. It will have a little icon in the right corner to switch. If you own both. You can not do both at the same time, so its either or. But it will pick up where you left off each time. Its the same on my Oasis2. It will get that software. You have to connect a speaker or headphones via blu tooth.

It also has the VoiceView and the inverted text only the Oasis2 had so far.

Thank you. I missed the quote about voice view in the description. Thatís exactly what I needed to know!

Not sure about Voice View, but prettty certain there's no text to speech. Instead, you're meant to purchase the Audible version, I think.

The basic Kindle can do text to speech via voice view. If itís the same it will work. I asked customer service but their response was ďyes, this device has a voice.Ē lol

Will this one have voice view/text to speech? I canít find it anywhere. I really want the oasis for the buttons but I think Iím going to get this one instead. Itís definitely in my budget better. (Coming from a voyage)

Let's Talk Kindle! / Can the basic kindle be used in a bag?
« on: August 09, 2018, 07:17:37 pm »
It isn't overheating. My other kindles, my iPad, my phone and older kindles I've had have all worked inside a ziplock
or a bag made for keeping devices dry. This one doesn't. The bag causes the pages to turn, the font size to increase and words to highlight as if a finger was on it. I just wondered if this specific Kindle just doesn't work in a bag like every other device I have or if it's a defective device.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Can the basic kindle be used in a bag?
« on: August 05, 2018, 12:06:20 pm »
I wasn't sure if this was an accessory question or not. My voyage (and previous Paperwhite) can be used in a water bag, for reading in the pool or bathtub. My husbands basic Kindle will not work in one. The screen goes all wonky, sometimes works, sometimes doesn't work if it's in our water bag or in a ziplock.

Is this just the way it is with all basic kindles or do we have a glitchy one?
