I don't like either, but that is probably because I am reading these out of context, with no idea who these people are or what they are supposed to be doing. I have no established relationship with the characters, so neither passage resonates in any meaningful way. I don't even know what the genre is or what the expectations are.

That said, find two or three beta readers who are familiar with your genre and have them work with you. Writing by committee will just make you insane, particularly if you intend to micro-edit in a forum like this. The feedback you get will be from random people who decided to answer you, not necessarily readers who represent your actual target market.

I agree here to some extent. I wasnt crazy about either. Thanks for your advice.

Thanks, all.  I know its not true editing nor was it my intention. Just a quick hip shot, nothing more than feeling which prose carries clearer, tighter language. The cencus aligned with my own thoughts and it was nice of everyone to help. Thanks!!

I also prefer number one, but would suggest a few changes.

The bleeding hadn't completely stopped but his house phone was ringing[1]. He got up and hobbled to it, grimacing at all the ceramic slivers wedged inside,[2] hopeful it was Carmen coming to her senses, or even Thad finally taking this serious[3]. Anyone else could [expletive] themselves. The punctured arch of his foot hurt like the dickens, as the old English saying went.

It was Thad and he was p*ssed.

"Slower, slower," Mario insisted. "Doing? I'm not doing anything. Are you still sore about Valerie High?" he joked[4] but a swell grew in his throat.

"Three pictures," Thad repeated. "They're old but look recently developed. It's as if . . ."

"Hold up, bud." Mario needed time to think. "What . . . what color is the water tower?"

1. The bleeding hadn't completely stopped and the phone ringing aren't really related. I don't know what came before this section, so to me, it doesn't make sense to have the two combined. The phrase "was ringing" is passive voice. "Rang" would be active.

2. You don't need to say "He got up and hobbled." If you say "He hobbled," we know he had to get up to do this. It also makes it more active. The "it" in "He hobbled to it" refers to the phone. That makes the next phrase, "grimacing at all the ceramic slivers wedged inside" refer to the phone. As it is supposed to refer to his foot, specify that.

3. I would suggest having two sentences in this section. The people he is hoping it was, as well as what anyone else can do refers to the phone ringing, so I would state this first.

4. There should be a comma before the coordinating conjunction.

I would suggest trying the following:

The bleeding hadn't completely stopped, but his house phone rang. Maybe it was Carmen coming to her senses, or even Thad finally taking this seriously. Anyone else could [expletive] themselves. He hobbled to the phone, grimacing at all the ceramic slivers wedged inside his foot. The punctured arch hurt like the dickens, as the old English saying went.

It was Thad and he was p*ssed.

"Slower, slower," Mario insisted. "Doing? I'm not doing anything. Are you still sore about Valerie High?" he joked, but a swell grew in his throat.

"Three pictures," Thad repeated. "They're old but look recently developed. It's as if . . ."

"Hold up, bud." Mario needed time to think. "What . . . what color is the water tower?"

Well said. Thanks for the corrections. Chap 9 finished with describing what actually happened to his foot in his kitchen while chap 10 follows a different main character, Thad, and we know for sure why he is calling Mario here. I only hope readers remember that he hurt himself the way I sort of jump into it even though it is somewhat of a plot point.

Thanks again.

All right.

I've just sent in all of my promo information by e-mail. I have set a few ducks in a row for a freebie promotion of BIG HAIRY DEAL. In addition to what I've got going here with Scott and his Magnificent Seven (or however many authors are involved now), I am also taking part in a big Black Friday to Cyber-Monday campaign with another group of promoting authors - as well as a bknights promo starting on November 27th.

Thanks for having me on board, Scott. Hope we all move a whole bunch of e-books!

Me too! I received your email and others. I will get back to everyone tonight by email with all the ads. If anything, it will be nice for new exposure.

I obsess over my writing too much sometimes. Can someone give their opinion which opening passage in my chapter 11 sounds better. It's not edited completely.

1. The bleeding hadn’t completely stopped but his house phone was ringing. He got up and hobbled to it, grimacing at all the ceramic slivers wedged inside, hopeful it was Carmen coming to her senses, or even Thad finally taking this serious. Anyone else could [expletive] themselves. The punctured arch of his foot hurt like the dickens, as the old English saying went.

It was Thad and he was p*ssed.

“Slower, slower,” Mario insisted. “Doing? I’m not doing anything. Are you still sore about Valerie High?” he joked but a swell grew in his throat.

“Three pictures,” Thad repeated. “They’re old but look recently developed. It’s as if . . ."

“Hold up, bud.” Mario needed time to think. “What . . . what color is the water tower?”

2. “Slower, slower,” Mario insisted. “Doing? I’m not doing anything, Thad.” Are you still sore about Valerie High?” he joked, though a swell was growing in his throat. He was lucky he’d split his foot open and had been here to take Thad’s call.

“Three pictures,” Thad repeated, his voice calming some. “They’re old but look recently developed. It’s as if . . ."

“Hold up, bud.” Mario needed a moment to think. Holding a napkin, he grimaced and blotted at the arch of his still bleeding foot, which had ceramic splinters trapped inside. It hurt like the dickens, as the old English saying went. “What color is the water tower?”

Okay! And make sure we all have an ad ready to go as well for whatever book you want to showcase. Reasonable word counts of course. I was thinking of including snippets from good reviews or awards in it as well. I will PM everyone on Wednesday with my email address and then and everyone selected will send me their ads and cover photos and I will make one giant file to disperse back to every one else so we all have each others ads and photo.

I hope that makes sense. I havent done one of these before. There may be an easier way.

If everyone is going free for the promo, I'll use one of my KDPS free days for this event. (They do let us split up the free days, right? I don't think I've done that before.)

I was going to go 99c

Thanks for asking! It may work. Let me see what else we end up with in the group. I'm thinking the audiance may have more focused interests and an off topic book may not benefit you or the other authors involved. I hope to finalize this by Wednesday. Let you know.

I need 10-15 authors who want to get in on a BLACK FRIDAY Social Media Sale. The Facebook and Blogging event will go on all day. The idea is to provide one or more of your books at discounted price the entire day and expose your work to new fan circles. Each author involved will be posting his / her own work and also the other participating author works on their social media sites at predetermined intervals throughout the day.  So say if authors Bob, Judy, Mike, Blake Crouch (HA!) and Chris were involved, I would post each of their works separately and at a predetermined time during Black Friday. Each author would do the same but not necessarily in the same order.  Here are more specifics:

•Minimum of 5 authors needed to participate. The max is around 20. I’m looking for high quality writing and I will hold the right to accept or deny who be part of this.

•Accepting the following Genres: Horror, Thriller, Mystery, Suspense, Short stories of the same, Speculative, Science Fiction, Fantasy.  (No romance or children’s books. Young adult may be okay.)

•Everybody involved pre-writes an related to their book, or books they’d like to showcase.

•You must reduce the price at least 50% during the day of the sale.

•During the day each participating author will showcase other works with one post (including their own) spaced at pre determined intervals.

•The showcase will be timed differently for each participant meaning your book might be posted on one authors FB or blog page in the morning and then in the evening on another authors page.

•Every participant will email their ad and accompanying cover photo to me and I will disperse them to all the other participants for the Black Friday showcase.

•It will probably work best to pre-schedule all the posts.

•Each author at his/her discretion may offer other incentives on their FB / Blog page that day including a free copy of their book if a reader LIKES their page or SIGNS UP for their mailing list. This info should be included in your ad.

So who’s in? Let me know what book(s) you’re planning to include by a link to your book here. Once we have an established group, I will PM everybody with my email and more details.  This is a great opportunity for all of us to expose our works to other reading circles. Who’d say no to FREE MARKETING!

All are welcome. There are not limits. In fact, the more that take part the better.

Really, at this point I just need to know:

Will your book be released by October 26? If not, on which day will it be released?
What is its title?
What format is it? (Short story, nonfiction, novel, collection, etc.)
That's great. My collection is Alone at Midnight is released.

Writers' Cafe / Re: Have you hit a $100.00 a month?
« on: October 11, 2014, 02:22:57 pm »
I can finally say I'm in the $100 club two months in a row!  :P ;). But I agree with the common theme here that shorter works don't sell nearly as collections do. I can't speak for novels as I'm writing the 2nd draft of mine as we speak. With three short stories I had out for almost a a year I was earning maybe $10 a month or less. Then I released Alone at Midnight, my short horror collection and things slowly began happening. I spent about $300 during launch week and have a FB page. Also I try and participate on GR quite often.

The short singles were all $.99 and the collection has been $3.99 since release which I feared was too high but I would say it wasn't. At least all of Sept I maintained a sales rank of about 18k on Amazon. To me there was no better feeling in the world. For me that felt pretty darn great.

But now ... what to do? Sales have softened....

Writers' Cafe / Re: Borrows and sales jumped off the cliff
« on: October 11, 2014, 02:04:09 pm »
Mine have trickled down as well. My sales rank for my collection had been steady between 15,000 and 25,000 for most of September ... That was about 3 sales a day and 3-5 borrows a day. Falling rapidly down the best seller list too which may further hurt.  Haven't sold any today:(

Back to promoting if I can figure out what to do. Wish everyone else luck. Maybe everyone's expendable income is going for their kids Halloween garb. I know mine is!

My horror is less blood and guts, more about the horrors of the human heart, the fears that lie in the idea that you might be going crazy, struggles with addiction and a tainted past. Alone at Midnight is seven stories of 156 pages.

I am holding a raffle as well for a $25 Amazon Gift Card.  No purchase is nessesary, thoughif you do, it gets you more entries.

Well thanks for drawing my attention to this. And not to keep it going too much longer but am I covering myself by also not having to purchase anything? You can simply enter by liking my fanpage. Is that similar to writing to mcdonalds for a game piece?

Also, rafflecopter does let you manually put in entries or so it seems.
