Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: New Oasis

I have never gotten one that did not need an update

By "add to my Ku list" I mean to select "read for free". So I'm adding it to the list.

My new Kindle Oasis is selected as the default device. At least it's listed as such. But although when I borrow a book in ku it shows up in the cloud it doesn't download to the new device until I tap on it. I've not tried purchasing a book since I've had the new Oasis so I don't know if that will download or not. The old Oasis usually worked.

That seems to be a bug that affects random devices. It affects all of mine unfortunately. I have to manually download books also, and sometimes it takes up to 10 times to get it to go through. Sometimes the issue persists, it randomly pops back up. This may be the issue you're having as well. In case not, just double check with the drop down that your default device is still enabled to send the books to on your amazon account.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Amazon really pushing Prime

I agree they really push it. I just ignore it for the most part.

I also get tired of the audible trials and membership ads everywhere, that pop up on tablet, phone, computer and kindles, if you are not currently a member. Both seem to be promoted about evenly -- too much.

Are you on version 5.13.3? If not, try manually installing it. It fixed my Oasis 3 problems.

My problem randomly happens, not consistently. With my Oasis 3 I have the current version of 5.13.3. PW 4, not yet, I have to manually install the update at some point if it does not auto-update.  I have had this for 2 years, so I do not think firmware will completely fix it. I think it's something with internet system conflicts? That's the only thing I can figure. Perhaps one day it will be working fine and keep working fine, you never know. Hopefully the same for the other posters in the thread, it's a mysterious and quirky bug

I actually think the page options moved with the last update. Or maybe the one before that. I don't play with 'em much so never noticed in the main settings area that there was any sort of notice about it. Also -- it's a bit odd because you have to actually open a book to see some of them -- and a magazine or newspaper doesn't count. The Aa options for those things are different.

Ah, okay. I try to keep mine updated because I always have the feeling I'm missing out on something otherwise and get impatient, so I did know it changed the font menu a few updates back. That may be why you're seeing something you're not used to if you haven't updated in awhile.

With this update I'm not noticing any changes that affect me yet.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: KOLL coming to an end in January
« on: November 08, 2020, 04:40:46 pm »
What you describe is KOLL -- Kindle Owners Lending Library. KOLL is a Prime benefit of owning an actual Kindle device; it was introduced in fall of 2011. Books available via KOLL were mostly ones published directly through Amazon. When KU began in 2014 or so, it essentially expanded KOLL as a subscription service and removed the 1 a month limitation. So the KOLL and KU catalogs are nearly exactly congruent. My recollection is they never pushed KOLL much and certainly since the introduction of KU haven't promoted it. My guess is it was a first effort to see if people would be willing to borrow books.

Then, in 2016 they introduced Prime Reading. Which was a different sort of expansion of KOLL. It operates more like KU but without a subscription (except that you have to be paying for Prime already). BUT does NOT include the whole KU catalog, which is HUGE -- like millions of titles. Rather, it has a catalog of something around 1000 which may include books by big name authors/publishers as well as magazines and comic books. The titles in the catalog do rotate in and out but once you've borrowed something you can keep it as long as you like. I have about 6 borrowed right now -- the oldest from April. You can hold up to 10 at a time.

I seem to recall discussion here, when Prime Reading was introduced, that it would mean the end of KOLL. But it's still been available all along. The main reason people don't know about it is that it is NOT promoted as a benefit of owning a kindle and hasn't been for years. Probably since they introduced KU -- of course they'd rather have people pay for a subscription. AND, you can't really find out about it on Amazon's website. You have to go in through your kindle (maybe a Fire qualifies) and navigate through the menu system to find the KOLL catalog. You're not likely to find it on your own, though -- you kind of have to know it's there. I would guess that anyone who didn't already own a kindle in 2011 and learned about it then, hasn't a clue.

The question remains: is KOLL really going away or not. The article mentioned in the OP says Amazon have started sending emails about it. So far, I've not gotten one and, as noted, I was able to borrow for November and was reminded I couldn't borrow again until December.

TY for the clarification.

I don't use reading with Prime so I did not keep up with it as much, or the KOLL others are mentioning. That's a shame if it's ending and some readers find good use with it.

All books that I buy go into the All section and I have to go there to download them. It's not a huge deal...I check it once a week and move them to the Downloaded section of my kindle.

If you have your settings to send to your Kindle device and it doesn't, that is a type of bug. I agree with you it's not a big deal if you can just go and download it though. I kind of had the double-glitch -- they wouldn't download, and when I went to manually download, it keeps not actually downloading even though it says it is, and keeps repeating the queue cycle. Now THAT does bug me  :(

My Oasis 3 now has this problem too.

I keep all my devices updated, so it's not an update issue, and they all are on different releases. Paperwhite 3 is different than 4, for example.

When I got a new router this year that helped a bit (I thought), but apparently was just a coincidence.

My PW and Voyage seem to be on the current version. No idea when they updated. I expect the Oasis is as well.

I did notice the other day I was looking for something in settings and saw some notice on a page that "some" options had moved. Specifically, Popular Highlights, Book Mentions, and Word Wise are no longer in Reading Options but available in the Aa menu while in a book. What I think that means is that you can set them differently depending on what you're reading by using the "Themes".

So I set everything the way I like it and have it on a 'custom' theme that I use for everything. But it looks like I can make more than one custom theme to use depending on what I'm reading -- say make something different for non-fiction vs fiction. The settings include font and layout but also those other things. I may have to experiment some -- right now I just read everything the same. That said, I'm pretty sure once you set a theme it stays 'til you change it. What I mean is, I don't think you can tie a theme to a book so that when you open book A it automatically sets to One Theme and when you open book B it automatically sets to Other Theme. If I get motivated, I may play with this some, though, as it could be more useful than I've been assuming. :D

I'm confused. Mine looks the same after the update. I don't have the options in my Aa menu, but where they were before in "About the book"

I'm going to start leaving the Wi-Fi off on my Oasis 3 to help the battery a bit. It's an at-home only device, so I have no issue charging it, but the battery does cause some annoyances at times.

I thought with Prime reading you could only borrow one book at a time, once per month. I know with KU it is 10 at a time.

I've always loved KU and hope it continues to grow. I think they must have a deal with Dean Koontz as they've also done a series for him with Amazon Originals

Sounds about right to me. Oasis 3 doesn't have the strongest battery

This is one area Amazon has been lax on. It is tedious to do large volumes on the device or on the website. I wish I could also do on the computer and have it synchronize. I don't get why we cant since it's supposed to connect with cloud but there we are :/

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Oasis 3 covers.
« on: October 28, 2020, 12:38:38 pm »
I got into covers with the Fires and Paperwhites and loved picking different designs. With the Oasis 3 I prefer reading without a cover and got an Apple tablet slipcover that looks like a giant envelope to protect it when not reading it. I love it. I don't plan to carry the Oasis around though so the sleeve isn't portable really without a large tote bag or something similar, so it depends on your purposes.

Interesting and creative!

I ended up ordering a slip cover instead, so ignore my above post

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but do we know yet if the 2017 Oasis skins work for the one? I have the new version and was wanting to order a skin. Doesn't look like they ever added it officially

I haven't been using my Kindles much lately since I've been reading on my phone so I thought I'd give this a try.  I sent a book from my Content and Devices page to my Paperwhite, latest version with the most recent firmware and then looked down at the Kindle to sync it but the book was already downloading.  Instead of syncing it I waited and it downloaded.  I keep this kindle by my computer just for checking out books I might want to read next.  I don't recall having any problems downloading books but most of the time I initiate the download from the device itself.  I don't remember if I've initiated any from Amazon's end recently until just now.

My guess is there's not much useful information there but it's what I have.

Many paperwhites don't have this issue.  You may be one of the fortunate ones

It happened again last night. Wouldn't push out a free book I "bought." However, it did finally push out the April 2020 update, so that was at least an encouraging sign. (Never mind that we're almost in July, and I only now got the update!)

John Hopper and Paperbackstash, does your Paperwhite 4 have the latest update?

Yes, I keep mine updated.

I ended up ordering an Oasis last week and switching to that. Enjoying it so far

This is my situation also. I have had this problem intermittently since autumn 2017, more often not working than working. I've had a few different kindles in that time and on each of them, it initially works for a time, then stops working most of the time, with occasional periods of working as it should. I've stopped caring too much about it.

It does still bother me when it interferes with my life/reading time - which it sometimes does, but I have given up mainly solving the bug. It does seem to help if I leave the Wi-Fi on awhile before downloading, at times.

Really I'm just ready for another paperwhite to be released. It will probably be years from now, and I find it discouraging. I was excited about the PW4 but find I like the PW3's screen clarity much better, and keep getting weird bugs. I have kept it since it's waterproof, which I needed. I do think Amazon can do better, however. I never invested in an Oasis because of the price difference and I didn't like the shape. I can't stand the thought of just having this PW4 for years more, though. All my amazon devices have become buggy, so I'm not sure if it's software update issues or less quality with build design anymore.

Not planning on it. I bought their new fire that was released in October. I was surprised they already released new ones. I don't need another upgrade so soon.

I've had this problem for over a year with my PW4. I first made a thread about it on another forum in February 2019. Others chimed in that some shared the issue. It randomly starts working again, but then does not hold. It's frustrating for sure, but from what I've seen others go through to try to fix, and my lack of luck myself, there's not much that can be done for this bug. It seems to strike randomly to different people for no reason.

It's the strangest thing, but mine just showed up after making this post and going outside for a bit. Now I have the "read" filter announcement

I personally love it and use it often. It depends on which kinds of books you enjoy reading.
