Apple devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod...) / So much for the iPad mini
« on: October 23, 2012, 11:27:34 am »
$329 for 16GB; same screen resolution as original Fire, but larger at 7.9". Case dimensions almost identical to 7" HD. I think I'll pass.......but the new iPad 4, that looks good. Same price as the New iPad (iPad 3), but much better specs.

Fire Talk / Limited Apps?
« on: October 14, 2012, 12:39:15 am »
I am curious about the comments on this board and across the Internet about the limited number of apps available in the Amazon Appstore for the Fire. I do a lot of stuff with my Fire, including in addition to the obvious utility for media consumption, handling all my bill paying and banking, e-mail (both POP and Exchange Server), editing Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, calendar and travel management, etc. Actually everything except heavy Web surfing and document work. I am using my original Fire much more than I expected and can see the larger HD being a laptop substitute for most things, especially with a bluetooth keyboard. What types of good apps or capabilities are missing from the Amazon Fire ecosystem that are available for more open Android devices and the iPad? How many calculator, task management, social media, etc. apps are necessary to ensure a fully robust tablet experience. 100,000....1,000,000....2,000,000...3 trillion?

I am not trying to be provocative. I think the iPad is great and would probably get one except that I am so invested in the cheap and easy to use Amazon ecosystem for music, news and streaming media that I don't need to complexify my life any further. What am I missing? Thanks for any comments.

Fire Talk / No Flash on HD
« on: September 13, 2012, 02:56:01 pm »
Here is an interesting statement from the Amazon support pages for the HD:

"Note: Flash content is not supported on Kindle Fire HD."

I know Adobe has withdrawn the mobile version of Flash, so I guess this was to be expected.

Will make the browser less useful.

Fire Talk / Fire HD 8.9 4G LTE has GPS
« on: September 10, 2012, 01:53:07 pm »
One thing I haven't heard anyone comment on is that the 8.9" 4G LTE version has a digital compass and assisted GPS according to the specs on the Amazon site. That is a nice addition that can be useful with a number of apps.

Fire Talk / What does this icon mean?
« on: January 12, 2012, 04:58:08 am »
Beginning yesterday, I have had a new icon appear on the status bar. Between the settings icon (wheel) and the wifi signal strength icon a new new speaker icon with a small "x" has appeared. I haven't changed any settings and my speaker works as normal, as do my ear buds. I have emailed Kindle CS, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this icon appear. I have never had this appear before.

Fire Talk / I'm being followed!

The Fire does not have GPS. Can anyone explain how the Mapquest App knows my exact location at all times?

Let's Talk Kindle! / Preemptive Strike: Demand a Discount!!!
« on: May 04, 2009, 07:07:03 am »
In light of what happened when Kindle 2 was announced, this thread is offered as a central location for those who don't understand how the world works:

If Kindle 3 is announced this week as expected, Amazon should offer a free upgrade to all owners of Kindle 2, who have only had their devices for about 3 months. It is outrageous that Amazon would announce a new model so soon after the previous version. They must have known there was a new model in the works and they had a moral obligation to notify purchasers before they bought. If the new version has folders, they should not only provide a free upgrade, but should include a minimum of 50 free book downloads so users can take advantage of the folder function without having to spend more money. If the new version has darker text, Amazon should provide a full refund to all those who purchased a Kindle 2 but don't want the new model. Of course, they should be allowed to keep their Kindle 2 devices.

Let's Talk Kindle! / How many screensavers?
« on: February 25, 2009, 12:07:37 pm »
Here's a trivia question for which I don't have the patience to figure out myself:

How many screensavers does the Kindle 2 have? I stopped counting at 15.

Let's Talk Kindle! / What's Coming in Kindle 3
« on: February 14, 2009, 02:55:09 pm »
A Canadian outfit ( has developed a phone that might tell us a lot about what is coming for the Kindle in its next versions. I think the Kindle 2 is a nice upgrade from the Kindle 1, but there is so much more it could do.
