Writers' Cafe / On the problem with pricing...
« on: April 18, 2011, 04:06:25 pm »
Over the past year I have read many comments from authors about how they are forced to lower their prices to meet readers' expectations. There are two camps arguing the issue: those who expect to get their reading content for free; and those who rely on book sales to survive. The fact is that authors are not brought into the discussion of pricing, not even when the difference between life and death is measured in book sales for an author. I don't just mean literal death, I mean actual death. Let's just think for a moment. Imagine a world where books don't exist at all. Imagine a world where the authors all threw down their pens and walked away. Would you write to entertain yourself? Doubtful.

Think that for every ebook you purchase there was a person on the other end, suffering and sweating, and crying to bring you a really good story. You would throw all that away so you can get the book for free? When there is no incentive to write, an author will stop writing. When there is no money, the writer will do something else to earn it; because, let's face it, nothing in life is free. The grocery store won't give you food for free. The utility companies won't give you electricity, water, or garbage pickup for free. That ereader you just bought cost money, and Amazon expected to be paid for it. How is an author any different?

An ebook price is 10% of the printed book price. Authors recognized that they must sacrifice some of their potential royalties in order to lure you to buy an ebook. It is not their choice, because you readers have basically put us over a barrel. But never expect to get a book for free. Your sense of entitlement only means that we authors will eventually stop writing and start doing something else. Then, when you can't find anymore free books to read, you will understand why.

Introductions & Welcomes / New Author

Hi, I'm new to this site, which was recommended to me. I write the Children of The Dragon series of SF/vampire fusion books. I have many years of experience as a writer and  fantasy artist. My work reflects a love for imaginative and speculative fiction, ever with the mission to educate as well as entertain. In addition to works of fiction, I also have a keen interest in history, mythology and science, as well as a skeptical interest in the workings of pseudoscience.

All of my published books are available for Kindle, and even though I don't own one myself I have embraced the idea of an electronic reader since day 1. Currently, there are 7 books of the series posted for sale, and I have  written 3 nonfiction books which are also available. You can see the list on the Book Bazaar thread. I have found Kindle to be the best way to sell books to people who don't want to haul their books around with them wherever they go, and a good way to save a tree or two. You can also find all my books in print on Amazon.

I am working on an 8th book in my series, and have 2 more planned out. I have 3 other nonfiction books in the works or outline stages. I hope to participate more but my time is limited, so you will forgive me if I post only every now and again. Thanks.  Theresa M. Moore
