Let's Talk Kindle! / Gifting a Kindle Question
« on: April 13, 2017, 03:50:53 pm »
Woot had a refurbished Kindle (don't remember the model but it has a single button at the bottom) for under $20 yesterday so I bought one for my sister as a gift. It is being shipped to me and I'd like to sideload a few MOBI books that I have before I give it to her so she will be able to read something right away. Will those books still be on the device when she registers the Kindle with Amazon? She has never expressed a desire for a Kindle but she enjoys reading outdoors, so I thought it would be a good introduction to Kindles. If she likes it, she can always upgrade to a newer device. If she doesn't like it, it was an inexpensive gift. I love my Voyage.

I uploaded a book on my Voyage and deleted the book. However, it is still showing up in my collection. When I click on it, it says item not available. The item you were reading has been removed and is no longer available on your Kindle. That's great, but I'd also like to get rid of the book cover. What am I missing?

I deleted a collection called "Current" on my Voyage. In it I had a book that was sideloaded and I just wanted to delete the book. Oops, I deleted the collection. By the way, when I got the box that told me I was deleting the collection, it would not let me cancel out of it or let me return Home. So poof, away it went.  I figured, OK, I'll just add a new collection and call it "Current" again but it says that I already have a collection by that name in the Cloud.

I clicked on Cloud on the Voyage and could not find that collection. Where/how do I retrieve that collection? If I'm not able to, I suppose I can just start a new one "Currently Reading" or something like that.

So how do I delete the book from my Voyage?

I'm selling my Kindle Keyboard because I have upgraded to the Kindle Voyage. $75 includes free shipping to US. Prefer PayPal or check (will ship after check clears).

This Kindle Keyboard is gently used and has always been covered with a skin from DecalGirl. It comes with the official Amazon Leather Lighted Case in Apple Green. I also have an M-Edge Leisure Jacket for protection at the beach or pool. It's not waterproof (you can't take your Kindle underwater) but it protects the Kindle from splashes and from sand. Also comes with the original charger. I also have another DecalGirl skin that I bought before the dragonflies. I'm not sure you can reuse it but I'll throw it in in case you can.

Edited because I hit Post before I finished!
Edited because it sold.

I'm thrilled with the Kindle Voyage I got yesterday. What a difference from my old KK. Although I'd love to read it naked, I know better and need to keep it protected while I read. I read through the entire Kindle Covers thread (twice) clicking on every cover mentioned. I love my official Amazon Lighted Cover for the KK so I think I'll stick with a proven brand. The Origami design will probably take some time getting used to for me, but I think the flip top might work out well. I have read the love-hate relationship many have, but I know it's a personal preference.

My question is since Amazon dropped the price of the Voyage $30 and is obviously trying to empty their stock, do you think they will discount the Leather Origami covers any time soon. This would require a crystal ball, I realize, but I wasn't sure what Amazon's trend has been with discounting covers in the past. Do they ever do that? I can sit tight and wait it out for a month or so and be careful with the naked Voyage in the meantime if there is a history of Amazon discounting covers from time to time. Otherwise, I'll just bite the bullet and order one now; maybe the red one.

Also, I may have missed it in reading through the thread, but is the power button accessible on that cover? I'm not sure I will ever need to prop it up on the table to read, so my other question is will the back part that folds be bothersome if I just want to flip the cover back and read? Will it flop around the folds? I wish there was a YouTube review and demo of the cover as it's a totally different concept for me.

I have lots of books on my old Kindle that are in MOBI format. I didn't think to look to see if they could be easily transferred to the new Kindle Voyage. These are books I purchased a long time ago that I have backed up on my computer. I'm hoping I can just connect the Voyage to my computer and drag and drop. I'll dig further to see if that's possible but thought maybe someone here would know off the bat.

Edit: Just read the specs page on the Voyage and I see it does support unprotected MOBI format, so I think I'm safe to go.

Just noticed this when I logged on to Amazon to look at Kindles. I'm in need of a new one and the $90 price for a Paperwhite/$170 for Voyage is very tempting. I don't know how long this deal will last. Discount will be applied at checkout.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Replace K3 Battery or buy new Voyage or Paperwhite?
« on: August 31, 2015, 12:10:53 pm »
My Kindle is really old (Kindle 3 Keyboard) and it's still on it's original battery. I haven't read too much in the past few years, but I'm now retired--so plan on reading a bit more. My Kindle doesn't hold a charge very long. A new battery is about $30. I don't know how long the Kindle will hold up even if I do replace a battery. (Do you see me trying to talk myself into a new Kindle?!!!). I haven't looked at Kindles in ages and see they've come a long way in screen resolution, etc. I'll have to check out the new Paperwhite and the new Voyage to see for myself. Any reason I should get one over the other? I'm not so interested in spending an extra $80 if I don't need it; on the other hand, if it's a big improvement, I'll go the extra $. Also, when do new models usually come out? Do they discount the older models?

My other question is about the "Special Offers". My Kindle came out before Special Offers existed. I understand they are on the screen when you are not reading, but do they pop up in the middle of a reading session too? That would be annoying. I can live with (and save $) with the Special Offers if it's not too big an annoyance.

A few other thoughts. I have lots of books in MOBI format. Would I just hook the new Kindle up to my computer and drag the files over to the new Kindle? I'd hate to lose all the books I already have. I have my Kindle3 in the original Amazon lighted cover and always liked it. Just wondered your thoughts on with or without covers for the new Kindles since they are already lighted.

So: Replace Battery/Replace Kindle?
      Special Offers/No Special Offers?
      Cover/No Cover

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Kindle Accessories / Are Kindle Keyboard and Kindle 3 the exact same size?

Just wondering if a cover for K3 will also fit a Kindle Keyboard. I think they are the same but I wanted to be certain.

Kindle Accessories / I think I like it (Dragonflies Over Pond skin)
« on: May 07, 2011, 12:20:24 pm »
I ordered this skin last month but we were out of town for a few weeks. I wasn't sure I liked this as much as my Turbulent Dreams skin but decided to switch them out today. First, it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be to remove the old skin. I hope I can reuse it again because I really love Turbulent Dreams. I thought Dragonflies Over Pond would be a nice change for the summer. It's growing on me.

Kindle Accessories / New Skin, New Look
« on: April 18, 2011, 04:56:48 pm »
Oh how I was tempted to buy a Noreve cover! I couldn't decide on a color and in the time I spent mulling over the color, I talked myself out of spending so much on it. I already have the Apple Green lighted cover and I have the Turbulent Dreams skin. So I decided to just get a new skin and I should be a happy camper. I'll just have to wait a little longer and talk myself back into a Noreve. How do you like this combo? I think it should take me through the summer.

Do I just lift the old skin off gently and place it back on the paper it came on? Will it be reusable again? I don't want to mess it up because I really like the Turbulent Dreams skin, too.

I just signed up for a free 30-day trial of that includes 2 free books. My first purchase was sent to my Kindle wirelessly. The books are quite expensive but you get 1 per month for $14.95. Don't know if I'll keep it past the 30 day trial, but it's worth a try.

I apologize...I know this has been asked before but I can't find the answer. I turned on my book to pick up where I left off last night. It didn't open where I left off. There was a menu on the right side of the screen and I selected Go to Last Page Read (or words to that effect) and it didn't take me anywhere near my last page read. It took me a while to find where I had left off.

Why did this happen? What is the best way to find the place you left off if this happens again other than scanning the text until you find it manually? What a pain that was. I decided to place a bookmark when I stop reading, but I'm sure I won't remember to do that all the time.

Kindle Accessories / FREE Executive Jacket with K3 Purchase at Best Buy
« on: February 06, 2011, 08:42:33 am »
Just saw this in their Sunday flyer. Good deal if someone is buying a K3 though. I'm holding out for the Executive Jacket with Molded Mounting System, but I might run over to Best Buy to see an Executive Jacket in person.

I have searched and searched for the answer to this. I know I read it somewhere here on the boards but I can't find it.

Now that I have found out that if I sort by collections, my books will also be listed on my home screen following the collection titles. I read somewhere that you can make a blank collection name as a placeholder, but I can't find how to do that. Sorry for the repeat question. I want my home screen to only show my collection titles and no book titles. I don't have enough collections (and I really don't want any more than what I have), so I'm looking for how to keep the remainder of the home screen blank. The book titles can follow on the next home screen, that's OK.

I should be reading instead of playing around with organizing, I know!

OK, I'm starting to get my books in order by using Collections with symbols before the Collection names. I have thus far:

_ Currently Reading  (I'm putting a space after the symbol in each of these Collection titles)
_ TBR Free Books
_ TBR Purchased Books
^ Series
+ Non-Fiction
+ Reference
= Read 2011

I have the collections list sorted by title. But when I do this, I see my book titles listed in alphabetical order separately after the Collections listings. If I sort by Collection, these books disappear into their proper collection, but my Collections list is not listed in the correct order according to the symbol used. What am I doing wrong? The end result I'm looking for is having my Collections listed in the order I have above without my books being listed separately below the list of Collections. Is that possible? I want to get this straightened out before I get too many books to manage!

There are a lot of new Kindle owners (myself included). Just curious as to what book you chose to read first?

I've chosen The Help as my first book. I'm loving it and really enjoy reading it on my Kindle.

Tips, Tricks, and Troubleshooting (Kindle) / Can I send a jpg to my Kindle?
« on: December 27, 2010, 09:49:00 am »
I started a project early this year. I scanned several recipes from my Cook's Illustrated magazines. They are currently on my computer but they are saved as jpg files. Can I email them to my free kindle email account at Amazon and have them loaded onto my Kindle?

EDIT: I just read a little further on the Amazon help page. Looks like they do recognize jpeg files. So I did a test and I'll let you know how it works out.

Let's Talk Kindle! / SquareTrade Warranty must be purchased from Amazon...
« on: December 06, 2010, 06:59:51 am »
[EDIT: I also found this to be not true. I ended up purchasing my policy directly from SquareTrade. Amazon was actually on their drop-down box for places where purchased. Amazon is really pushing their own policy which is $50 for 2 years. The JINGLE code still works on SquareTrade, but it only gives 20% discount. Still a good deal.]

...if you purchased your Kindle through Amazon. I just got off the phone with SquareTrade inquiring about the 40% discount (which was for Thanksgiving weekend only). Then I was told that I can't take advantage of their 20% discount through Facebook since I purchased the Kindle on Amazon. She said I must purchase their insurance through Amazon as well. But I can call SquareTrade back after purchasing the insurance on Amazon and they will refund me the 20% difference. Just thought I'd share this information. Maybe someone else knows more about this. I know you can get two different answers when you talk to two different reps.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Can I download books now (Kindle hasn't arrived)
« on: November 24, 2010, 07:07:56 am »
Just wondered if I can/should be getting my library started. If I see a book that I would like to read, can I download the Kindle version onto my computer and then just transfer it later when I get my Kindle?

Kindle Accessories / What do you think of these combos?
« on: November 22, 2010, 08:02:18 pm »
The Apple Green Amazon lighted cover and the DecalGirl Turbulent Dreams, of the Celtic Tree, or the Van Gogh Irises? Not enough green in the skin, or is it a nice accent color? Do they clash?  I know it's a matter of taste and no two tastes are the same. But which do you think looks best with the bright green cover? None of the above? I like them all about equally, so I need help.

Thanks in advance.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Should I dismiss Kindle because of this?
« on: November 21, 2010, 12:41:00 pm »
I'm just now researching e-readers and naturally have narrowed the choice down to two (Kindle or Nook). To me, the deal breaker with the Kindle was the fact that I can't download books from my library because the Kindle is not a compatible format. But then I read on and found Calibre software will do the conversion for me. I'm very confused and don't want to make the wrong decision because I didn't understand all of the facts. I would be checking out books through the Overdrive service from my library, which requires Adobe EPUB compatible devices. Is the Kindle out of the question or will Calibre solve this problem for me? Thanks.
