Fire Talk / Tonal noise that my Fire HD 8 Plus makes
« on: September 06, 2020, 08:38:01 pm »
My Fire HD 8 Plus makes a noise, just a electronic tonal upward arpeggio, even when I am not doing anything with the Fire. It is not loud, but I am not going to leave this device in the bedroom during sleeping hours. Is anyone here familiar with this and how I can make it stop? I don't see anything in the settings, but perhaps I missed it. It also occurs sometimes when I am reading and listening to music on it. While it's going on (for 2 seconds) the music cannot be heard. I thought maybe it had something to do with a game app.  I have not played any games on this device. Have had it for about two months. Thanks, if you can help me with this.

Fire Talk / Documents Folder on Kindle Fire HD 8 Plus [found]
« on: August 16, 2020, 05:29:30 pm »
[Update:  I found the documents folder under "Utilities" and found my book. Now I see that whenever I want to open it, I need to go there instead of to a Documents section that can be found on the main menu.]

I cannot find the documents folder in my new Kindle Fire HD 8 Plus. Would you let me know if you see it on yours? I sent a book to it with the Send To Kindle feature. With my other Kindle Fires, books that were not Amazon's went to the Documents folder or came through on the carousel as a document, but there is no carousel on the Fire HD 8 Plus.

Perhaps there is a way to see the most recent uploads the the Fire?

Anything Else Amazon / Tap speaker telling me battery is low
« on: July 22, 2016, 05:55:25 pm »
In the past few days, my Tap has told me, after I told it to set alarm . . ., that the battery level is low.  I have it plugged in all the time and it is sitting on the base.  I checked the connections and moved the plug to another place on the power strip, but it said it again last night.

Has anyone one else heard this on their Tap?  It continues to work.

Anything Else Amazon / Amazon Fire TV Audio Not Working . . . AGAIN
« on: March 16, 2016, 01:28:58 am »
I had problems not getting any sound on my fire TV not long after I bought it in 2014.  Now and then it goes off and I reboot the TV and it works.  Now it doesn't work at all.  I spent a lot of time on the phone with their Fire TV Help Monday night but they could not suggest anything that works.

Tuesday afternoon I got it working but didn't have time to watch. When I tried it tonight, it didn't work, so I rebooted the TV again, didn't work.  Rebooted the fire TV.  No go. Turned it all the way off and then on.  Reset to factory settings. Didn't work.  I am so frustrated. I wanted to watch Miranda last night and did not want to watch on tablet. Wanted to watch again tonight but couldn't.  Hate this (and yes, everything else has been going wrong too).

Not Quite Kindle / Lost My Brother Paul on Tuesday
« on: January 29, 2016, 01:21:19 pm »
Those of you who are facebook friends know about this -- I've been posting there a lot.

My brother Paul had a stress test on Tuesday afternoon and while on the treadmill:  cardiac arrest.  They turned off the treadmill and had him walk a few steps to a table and he collapsed.  They brought him back but lost him again.  It was a few blocks from the hospital -- he went in an ambulance with the cardiologist and they worked on him in the ER, but he died.

This happened between 3-4pm. Doctor tried to call me on my cell and I was on my way to or at work.  Cell was on but wasn't working (but I didn't know that).  I was doing work when one of Paul's friends IM'd me on facebook.  I saw it hours later and another friend of his had done the same.  I couldn't get through to them on my cell and finally used my desk phone (have to enter client/matter # to call outside of NY) and got through to hear the news.

Here is the obit in the Asbury Park Press:

He was a wonderful person.

Not Quite Kindle / Boost (adware?) won't go away
« on: September 08, 2015, 10:08:48 pm »
Unfortunately, Boost has been taking over several pages on my computer, including Amazon, LL Bean, NY Times and Kboards.  The pop-ups suggesting products is driving me crazy.  It got on my computer when I uninstalled and installed Google Chrome.  I did that because I couldn't get Chrome to open.  After I uninstalled all the accompanying programs (including Boost), Google would not open (again), so I installed Mozilla Firefox, which I am now using.  Even though I uninstalled Boost, it is all over those pages again.  There is a page on Boost that tells you how to disable it, but it is misinformation.  It tells me to go to the Firefox logo on the upper left of my page, but there is no firefox logo in that location.

Can anyone help?  The Boost program does not show on my control panel, because I uninstalled it, but Boost is still working on the pages and I hate it.  Only Facebook seems to be completely free of it.

For a few weeks, maybe a month, my Echo, upon hearing "Alexa . . ." lights up in red and says "I'm sorry, I don't understand right now, try again later" (something like that).  I solve this problem by unplugging and re-plugging it in.  Then it comes up in blue with the "Hello" and works.

I wondered if anyone else has had this happen.  At first I thought maybe it went offline and that my Time Warner high-speed internet connection was faulty, but this has happened so many times.  Other than that, it works, and I use it mainly as a bluetooth speaker with my laptop and to get the weather forecast (and occasionally for other things).

I probably need to call Amazon customer service. For the past two days I've been unable to download books (docs since they are not amazon books) to my Fire HD6.  Then I realized it also would not download an Amazon sample.  It shows them on the carousel, but then won't open since they are not downloaded.  I used "send to kindle" to get them there.  A box comes up saying it won't download; check wi-fi connection and then i press "try again" (many times).

Has anyone had a similar experience?  I know that the wi-fi is working.  It shows with the little icon on top, and Netflix works.  I do most of my book reading on my paperwhite, but I like to have my current books on my HD6 as well.

Not Quite Kindle / Blizzard in Northeast
« on: January 26, 2015, 12:48:37 pm »
Blizzard just started a few hours ago, so not too bad yet.  In NYC, mass transit will be cut back around 8pm.  This is unusual.  Trains normally run 24/7.

Predictions have been that it will be the worst blizzard ever.

Not Quite Kindle / Wi-Fi Speakers (Sonos, Polk Audio, Sony, others)
« on: January 19, 2015, 06:38:52 pm »
A few weeks ago in the Echo thread, I brought up the topic of Sonos wi-fi speakers.  I would like to know what you think of the various wi-fi speakers you may have used or heard.  I was thinking of buying the Sonos in December, but since I was able to get an Amazon Echo speaker, I'm putting that off.  (Another reason is that I just purchased new wired speakers for my receiver.  My cable TV is connected and won't work with the TV speakers, so I needed these to replace my old messed- up Advents that are 39 yrs. old.)

I was in Best Buy tonight for speaker wire (I had a problem with the 16 guage speaker wire from Amazon basics -- won't fit to my receiver for one of the two holes) and heard a Sonos on display.  I could not pick the music and it was a pop song that was a little like rap and sounded way too boomy -- it was vibrating on the stand.  This was disappointing, since I found that the Echo speaker is not bad at all (too bassy for me at times, especially for spoken voice), and I'd heard through a Geekwire radio program that the Sonos sound much better than the Echo.

Some of the other wi-fi speakers I've heard of are made by Sony, Bose and Polk Audio (the basic one was on sale at Best Buy for $130 today -- list is $200), but there are many others.

So, aside from the Amazon Echo, what do you have in wi-fi speakers and what do you think of them?

Anything Else Amazon / Amazon Music Importer
« on: January 19, 2015, 01:52:13 pm »
Anyone importing their music from hard drive to your Amazon Music Library?  I did this a few years ago, but then they started charging $25/year to store more than 250 songs.  So I lost things in there.  I was on strict budget.  Now I want access to my music to listen on the Amazon Echo speaker.

At first I tried importing specific albums, but it was taking so long and I got tired of waiting so I could import the next album.  Then I decided to import everything, which required me to pay for the storage ($25/yr.).  I paid it.  Started importing music about 4am and it has not finished and it is not showing me the progress.  There is a progress bar, but it's stuck in the same place over the past 10 hours.

I contacted Amazon help with the chat feature around 6am.  I did not get any definite answer about why it is taking so long and not showing me the progress.  The rep was going to have me close and re-open the importer, but I told him that a box came up telling me that it is still importing.  Decided to just leave it on and went to bed.  Checked progress today and where it said it had imported 695 songs of 1684, it now says 711 songs of 1684.

I had Amazon help call me on the phone.  Their records shows I imported almost 2800 songs.  This does not show anywhere on the Amazon importer dialog box nor anywhere on my computer.  I spent the last 1/2-hr. talking to a woman at Amazon and never came to any satisfactory resolution.  I want to know just how long this will take!  Sometimes the dialog box says 17 hours, but right now it says 92 hours.  She told me that as it imports it has to "match" each piece of music to Amazon's library of music.  So, if something doesn't match it doesn't go in.  That doesn't sound good to me.

Anyone else here import their music library from hard drive to Amazon?  How long does it take if you have a substantial amount of music?  I thought maybe some of you could tell me what your experience was.  I actually don't remember how long this took when I did it a few years ago (when they didn't charge $$ for it).

I only have a fraction of the amount of music that it will take (for $25/yr. it takes up to 250,000 mp3s).

I've wasted so much time on this (realizing I have to leave it and check it later from time to time).  I would have thought that overnight was long enough.

Anything Else Amazon / Fire TV and audio
« on: December 15, 2014, 07:23:45 pm »
I have been enjoying watching netflix and Amazon prime instant video on my TV with fire TV.  I just finished watching House of Cards last night.  But tonight I'm not getting any sound from the TV.  I don't know why, but I spent over an hour with help on the phone from Amazon.  We unplugged the fire TV; re-set to factory settings, synched applications, but there is still no sound.  I'm getting the video but no audio.  The problem may be with the TV, but Amazon didn't tell me that (the way Time Warner told me when I couldn't watch cable with the TV speakers years ago (have had cable set up to my stereo, so it comes out of my stereo speakers, which are inferior to my TV speakers (very old speakers from 1970s)).

This used to happen occasionally when I watched amazon prime instant with my Kindle HD7 two years ago.  I never knew why, but I'd try it again after a few weeks and it would work fine.

Where I left it with Amazon is that they will look at settings on Sharp TVs from 2006-7 and will get back to me within a week.  I will try again tomorrow when I get home from work.

Has anyone else ever had this issue with their TV audio function?

Anything Else Amazon / Amazon Packing Slips?
« on: December 14, 2014, 11:36:27 pm »
I had received a packing slip in the box for each shipment I'd received from Amazon until this week when I received a box with an electric toothbrush, extra package of brushes for it and a music CD.  The Philips Sonicare toothbrush is going to be a Christmas gift for my brother and I would have given him the slip in case he doesn't like it and wants to return it.  (He probably will be fine with it though).  Has anyone noticed that they aren't receiving a packing slip any more?  I realize that if I want to return something that I need to go online and print a shipping label.

Last night I updated the operating system (IOS 8? or something like that).  I am connected to my wifi network but not online.  In the top right corner there is a little symbol with an x then 100% (charge) and the charged up icon.

I usually can find the answer in the Apple support pages, but I keep seeing the same instructions of things I've already done.  I am connected to wi-fi, but there is a padlock icon next to the wi-fi icon to the right of my checked off wi-fi-network name.

I have already reset the network and logged back into my wi-fi network.

Should the HTTP Proxy be off, manual or auto?  Mine is set to off.  I "renewed the lease" (more than once).  I am now on the page for my network that has the IP address and other info.  I don't know where to proceed from here.  The support page has no further info (when I click on links for more info, I keep getting the same questions and answers).

Thanks, if anyone can help.

I cannot find this in my account.  Also not sure how to search for this in kboards.  I think someone posted a link to the page where it tells you which ebooks you can buy (for lower price) for books purchased earlier in paper.  I had a very limited number, but I wanted to see if it updated to contain more.

Not Quite Kindle / Monday Holidays -- 3 day weekend?
« on: May 26, 2014, 02:15:10 pm »
Probably shouldn't start this, but I thought it would be better to vent here than on facebook, where someone from my firm may see it.  I realize that in many jobs there are NO paid holidays, and I empathize with anyone here that gets none of them.  In all of my full-time jobs in the past, when there was a Monday holiday that the my employer observed (there are 4 this year), I had a 3-day weekend.  All the people with Mon.-Fri. schedules have a 3-day weekend at my firm.

My schedule is such that I work Tues-Sat. and my weekends are Sun.-Mon.  I inquired last week about whether I was to have another day off this week in lieu of the holiday.  I was told that I only get the holidays that fall Tues.-Sat.  They apparently are not aware that none of them fall on Saturday.  I will get the holidays we have for 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas this year.

I tell myself this is small potatoes and that it's just a trade-off for working at this firm, and geez, thank goodness we are not working for an outsourced place like Williams Lea.  But when I found out, I felt sick inside.

There are a number of people in my department (word processing) who work 3 days per week, approximately 26-28 hours.  Those who normally work Sun, Mon., Tues. or Mon. Tues. Wed. get the paid holiday this week.  I am the only person in our department who works full time with Sun.-Mon. as my weekend.  My co-workers on my shift (Tues.-Fri. evenings) are Mon-Fri. workers and they get the 3-day weekend, and my co-worker on Saturday (when I work 1p-8p) works a 3-day week and is off 4 days every week.

I checked with a former co-worker at a firm I where I used to work.  Her weekend is same as mine, and they offer her another day off this week in lieu of the holiday.  I know that other law firms where some employees have odd weekend schedules do this.

Think I will take PTO after Labor Day to give myself a 3-day weekend for it.

I have worked a lot of temp in recent years and got no paid days off, but I knew that going into it and was desperate enough (and wanted to keep up my skills) to do it.

I went away May 1-4 for my nephew's wedding in Atlanta.  I was offline the entire time.  I took my Kindle Fire HDX (8.9") but left my heavy ipad2 at home.  My hotel charged about $15/day for wi-fi/internet, so I did not get it.  I had breakfast Sunday at a bagel shop (Einstein's bagels that are nothing like NY bagels) that supposedly has free wi-fi.  I got onto their wi-fi, which was called "".  My fire showed as being on wi-fi, but I was unable to access the internet, so my email, facebook and NY Times apps would not show any more than they did on May 1 at home.  I asked one of the employees, but they only told me to get the password or code from the tv screen in the shop.  The screen only said bagelnet, which is the name of the wi-fi network.  I don't think that was a password, and my fire did not ask for a password.

Has anyone else had a problem connected to internet with their fire hdx while away from home?

When I got home, I got right on my wi-fi network and my email updated.  At the Atlanta airport on Sunday, there was a charge for internet at the gate, so I could not get on there either.  I was suprised about this, because at LaGuardia when I left NYC, they had free ipads with internet all over the place -- gate and in restaurants near the gate.  I think this was supposed to be an incentive to order food through the ipad.  Most people were using their own phones, laptops or ipads, but I did check email on one of their ipads.  When I saw all the ipads at LaGuardia, I figured this was a standard airport service, but they had none in Atlanta (this was my first air travel in 7 years).

Not Quite Kindle / Craig Ferguson leaving late late show end of 2014
« on: April 28, 2014, 08:31:39 pm »

I do not like this!  I used to watch a lot and started recording it again about 2 weeks ago.  Watch it when I get home from work.

I don't know who they have in mind to replace him.

I think perhaps it was his idea to leave, but I am not sure.  I think he has a game show lined up.

What do you think about this?

I just saw this on the Amazon home page:

3/4/14 only.

$49 for basic kindle; $99 for paperwhite.

I just saw this on -- perhaps it just went up today?  It doesn't say when it expires:

Not Quite Kindle / Amazon Prime 2-day doesn't always come through
« on: December 07, 2013, 03:14:51 pm »
Just wondered if anyone else with Amazon Prime has not gotten their 2-day shipment on the date promised.  I ordered a few things very early Wed. morning that were to arrive yesterday (Friday).  I could see by the UPS tracking on Friday that instead of being out for delivery, it left Horsham, PA around noon.  It's in NY now, but UPS doesn't deliver on Saturday.  I had to enter my tracking number on the UPS site to find out that it will be delivered Monday before 8pm.

I've had problems in the past with attempted deliveries on my 2-day deliveries, but only either because I wasn't home or the UPS man didn't bother to ring my apartment, or USPS came at night after I went to work and they didn't leave a delivery slip until the next day.

I think that Amazon is starting to slip on this -- too much work for too few employees.

It updated eventually.  Problem solved.

Addendum:  Found the place to put new gmail password in (while in gmail:  settings/email general settings/gmail (default)/Incoming settings) . . . but after refreshing and sync, it's still "checking emails" and not updating the inbox.

I changed my password for gmail via my laptop yesterday after a friend told me she received an odd spam email that had my name (but not my email address) in it.  My Kindle Fire HD 7" is searching for new emails unsuccessfully and I don't see how to put my new password into my gmail app.   It just keeps spinning (checking emails) without any result.  :(

(My ipad had a pop-up box that told me the password was no longer valid and linked to the place to put the new password in.)

Does anyone know how to fix this on a KFHD?
