Let's Talk Kindle! / Anybody using Themes yet?
« on: November 14, 2018, 06:28:16 pm »
I just started playing around with them. My initial take was negative, that they just made it harder to get to page settings etc.

But I have changed my mind:
  • you can have different font/margin/size options for Portrait and Landscape, which is something I have wanted for awhile because it is more correct typographically
  • I can have one with larger text for when I am on treadmill or w/o glasses
  • it is much easier to switch themes once you have them set up
I just wish one could pin a theme to a particular book so I can go from one book to another and have them look different and stay that way without having to switch themes.

Fire Talk / Updates on Fire HD6
« on: January 23, 2017, 02:16:45 pm »
For a number of months, my Fire HD6 has failed to update 'system components' properly. So while I had the latest Fire OS version installed, the 'baked in' Amazon apps were not updating:
- no Page Flip
- no Audible Channels update
- no support for Amazon Music subscription
- no Firefly app
- collections didn't sync properly
- etc.

I spent a couple of lengthy customer support sessions to no avail and much frustration, and as recently as 4 weeks ago, Check for Updates button did nothing and I just gave up and sidelined the HD6. But today I thought I'd try again. Indeed some 20 'system component' updates were available, and it seems all of the issues enumerated above (and more no doubt) are resolved.

So if you have been having similar issues with updates, it looks like Amazon may have finally resolved them.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Paperwhite (1st generation) update: 5.6.1.1
« on: July 07, 2015, 11:01:35 pm »
Hey we need some discussion for this! [edit: I see there's a 'combined' updates thread but PW1 is really a different beast]

From the Kindle Updates page at http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201064850:

The software update includes general improvements and the following new features:

  • Support for Family Library
With Family Library, you can link two Amazon accounts and share books on your Kindle Paperwhite and other compatible Amazon devices and apps. To learn more, visit Family Library.
  • Support for Kindle FreeTime Unlimited
Kindle FreeTime Unlimited is an optional monthly subscription for Kindle FreeTime that offers thousands of books for children ages three- to eight-years-old.
  • Word Wise -- See Hints for Difficult Words
With Word Wise, you can see simple definitions and synonyms displayed inline above more difficult words while you read. Word Wise makes it easier to understand challenging books more quickly.
  • X-Ray Improvements
Explore the "bones of a book" with an improved timeline and the ability to browse images and filter by Notable Clips.
  • Deeper Goodreads Integration
Goodreads on Kindle makes it quicker to access and update your reading status and adds the ability to preview and purchase books without leaving Goodreads.
  • Periodical Improvements
You can access up to 40 magazine back issues from the cloud on your device. Multiple issues of the same periodical are now collected together.

Also:
  • About This Book
  • Support for Russian and Dutch (for user interface features)
  • Collections are like more recent Kindles now - can select which to show on device, toggle between Cloud and Device within collection etc.

On the whole, a welcome update (and likely the last we'll see for this device).

A couple of minor issues with Russian/Dutch support: after switching to one of these languages, it tries to download a dictionary, but fails, because the dictionary has not been added to Kindle library (as it would if you had bought one of the newer Kindles). And somehow the third party Russian-English dictionary I bought awhile back is 'not compatible with this device' even though it worked previously.

I'd like to know if it is possible to copy an HTML file to the Kindle and open it with the Kindle browser. If so, what is the correct syntax to use for the URL? file://???/myHTML.html, i.e what is the value of '???'?
