I have been informed by my Boss that it is not work friendly and now I can not access KB from work for today.  >:(

Not Quite Kindle / Does anyone use a white noise machine?
« on: March 16, 2011, 11:02:54 am »
My Mom is a light sleeper and lives in a downstairs apartment. She has a new neighbor upstairs that plays music at night. Not loud, but just enough to keep my Mom awake. I am exploring ways to help make the situation better and one of them is a white noise machine. Can anyone give me a recommendation?
Also, what are your favorite ear plugs?

Not Quite Kindle / Do cats sleep walk? Seriously.
« on: February 10, 2011, 08:17:30 pm »
OK all you cat lovers. My question stands…Do cats sleep walk?

I have a 14 year old cat at work that adopted us when she was about 3 months old. She is an indoor/outdoor cat that spends most days bugging me and sleeping on her bed that sits on a little two drawer cabinet by my desk so it is level with my desk. Nights she spends outdoors or in our employee room where she has a cat door and very plush sofas to sleep on as well as food and water.

Anyway, back to the point. This afternoon all was going well. I was doing a project at my desk and Aggie (the cat) was bugging me as usual. I put her back on her bed and petted her for a bit and she went to sleep. All of a sudden I see out of the corner of my eye Aggie getting up like she’s a puppet on a string. Like, almost levitating up. So I look over at her and holy hell, it’s zombie cat!!!
She’s just sitting there facing me and kind of swallowing. The inner eyelid on one eye is about a third closed and the other eye is kind of squinched up. I called her name, no response. She’s just kind of sitting there weaving slightly. My heart is hammering at this point. I take her head between my hands and lift her face slightly so I can get a look into her eyes and there is no one home. She’s not making any sounds except for that creepy swallowing.  I brush her head, which she loves, and she still isn’t making any sounds or moving around, just sitting zombie cat like.

I sleep walk so I know what it is like from that side of things. My daughter sleep walks and I know what she looks like when that happens. Aggie looked just like my daughter does when she’s asleep but has gotten up. Vacant stare with that weird swallowing thing going on.

So, since Aggie does not look like she is going to lay down any time soon, I pick her up and take her to the kitchen. My thinking is maybe some wet food will bring her out of her trance. She ate and drank fine and followed me back down the hallway to my office. I picked her up and put her back on her bed and she looked at me for a minute then just lay down. Now, she has arthritis so she’s a bit slow to lay down, but just then it was like she had never heard of arthritis. She went to sleep and by the time I was ready to go home, she was almost back to normal. Just a little sleepy looking but nothing obvious wrong.

All I know is she scared the bejezzus out of me and I’ll keep an eye on her tomorrow. What do you think?

Archives / SOLD!! For Sale- Sutter Large Zip Top in Turquoise
« on: October 07, 2010, 01:25:50 pm »
I bought this purse in August and have used it since then. Lately, however, I have found that it is just too big for me and have gone back to using a smaller purse. (And my back feels much better! :))

It's been lightly used and is in wonderful shape. I have not used any conditioner on the leather so you will see the usual light scuffs consistant with the type of leather. No spills, no rain, no stains.

I paid $76.00 for it new and am asking $45.00.
I'll post pictures if necessary.

PM me if you are interested.  ;D

Aloha to everyone from Hawaii! Thank goodness the Tsunami was not as bad as predicted. I was watching Hawaii News Now live camera focused on Coconut Island and saw the surges hit...pretty impressive and scary.
My heart goes out to the people of Chile.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Question for K1 owners
« on: January 18, 2010, 08:37:23 am »
This morning while reading my K1 decided to spontaneously update itself. It's been a couple of days since I've had whispernet on and I usually top off the charge every 2-3 days.
What happened is I was reading and all of a sudden the page went blank, the silver thingy went crazy and then the words "updating" came on screen at the bottom. Then it did like a soft reset and left me back at the main menu page. It did not remember where I left off in my book.
So I then thought maybe I had received a real update, and looked at my settings and the software version said 2.0...but now I can't remember what the previous version is!!!
The question is what software version do you all have?

Not Quite Kindle / Epic Road Trip
« on: June 27, 2009, 01:39:00 pm »
I have been given the opportunity to go on a little adventure. :) The short story is I will be driving from Jacksonville, FL to Portland, OR. My tentative route is from Jax to Nashville, then to St. Louis and on up to I-80 and take I-80 across the States to Salt Lake City where I will go North.

My questions are:
1. Are there any places I should avoid?
2. Is there anything I should not miss?

I have a week from Sun to Sun to complete the trip.

Not Quite Kindle / What to do with your old DTB's?
« on: December 10, 2008, 01:35:11 pm »
The major supplier of my DTB's is a local independent bookstore that has a trade-in program. I have been going to this particular bookstore for well over 25 years now using the used book trade-in program and usually buying a new book or two a couple times a month.

I usually have more credit on my trade-in card than I get in books (just for those book emergencies when I don't want to give up cash) so have a carryover balance. At this time of year the carryover balance can be quite large, so a few years ago I decided to play secret santa and requested the bookstore take my used book credit balance and apply it to anyone who needed it and wish them a Merry Christmas.  Needless to say, I trust them to accomplish this without reservation. :)

Nothing makes me more sad than listening to a conversation in a bookstore about not being able to afford a book.  :'(

Since I have Joy now, I won't be doing the book trade-in thing on a regular basis and I want to make one last big donation so this weekend I'm going to be ruthless and round up some all of my DTB's and go down to the bookstore to donate the credit to anyone who needs it.  ;D ;D

Not Quite Kindle / Wow! It REALLY IS close to Christmas!
« on: December 04, 2008, 03:39:38 pm »
OK, so I'm here at work minding my own business reading the Kindle Boards when on the radio comes....Bruce (The Boss) Springsteen wishing me a Merry Christmas Baby!  :o

It really drove home the point that it really is close to Christmas and I just hadn't thought about it in those terms- yet. Yikes! Gotta get my shopping done. Hey, just thinking aloud here, maybe I'll do a bit of shopping through the links to Amazon!!  :D :D

Tips, Tricks, and Troubleshooting (Kindle) / Listening to music on Kindle
« on: November 15, 2008, 12:58:57 pm »
Hey all.

I know this probably isn't a new tip, however I've had my Joy for awhile now and somehow never thought of this until I had to go out of town for a few days and left my MP3 player behind.  :(

You all know you can play music loaded onto your Kindle, and the sound quality isn't quite there if you are not plugged into headphones, right?

Well, think know all those mini speakers that work with your MP3 players? They work with the Kindle as well!

I just make sure Joy is plugged into the wall so I don't drain her battery and play away. Now I can eliminate one more thing from the "must take with me" list when I travel.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Weird book formatting (not Topaz)
« on: November 02, 2008, 11:56:04 am »
I ran accross a weird format in a couple of books by Julie E. Czerneda a while ago and I wonder if anyone else has seen this in ebooks before.

The first sentence is normal but the rest of the paragraph is indented. I have only seen these two books with that formatting.

The first one I just about didn't read because it was so weird to look at but once I got used to it, it was ok and wasn't too distracting. I downloaded the second book and found it was the same formatting, but since I had already read and gotten used to it with the first one, I went on to read the second one. (BTW, they were both worth it!)

The books are: Ties of Power and Beholder's Eye.

Kindle Accessories / Kindle Skins-do you still like?
« on: October 30, 2008, 06:28:42 pm »
Hello to all and boyhowdy it's good to be over here!  This question is for the folks who bought the kindle skins- how do you like them? I have read where some of you took the skins right back off immediately and others were very pleased with them.  Now that the newness has worn off, do you still like them?

Note: a lot of replies to this thread have referred to Kindle skins from DecalGirl. DecalGirl has over 80 designs for Kindle; I've posted a few of them below. Each of them is clickable and takes you to the DecalGirl site. These are affiliate links - so your use of them helps to keep this site a-Kindlin'. :)  - Harvey
