Writers' Cafe / Babelcube procedures
« on: July 27, 2020, 04:41:18 am »
Hi, I have a question. If you hire a translator on Babelcube to translate your book, who is ultimately responsible for putting the translated edition up for sale on various channels? Is the rights holder supposed to do that? The translator? Or Babelcube?

Writers' Cafe / Change in AMS Sponsored Products Attribution
« on: July 07, 2020, 01:40:23 am »
AMS has announced that "We’re changing our Sponsored Products attribution for books. As of July 1, 2020, sales for current and new Sponsored Products campaigns featuring book ASINs will be reported for the advertised ASINs only. To keep viewing sales for multiple book formats, add those formats to a single Sponsored Products campaign."

This raises two questions:
1. Does this change how Amazon will evaluate the relative success - and therefore the placement - of the ad? I have one ad for a kindle book, that is very successful in selling paperback versions of the book. The ad has been in place for a long time and enjoys good placement due to its success. Will this make the ad suddenly appear less successful - not only in the ACOS metrics I see in my dashboard, but for Amazon too?
2. Can one add formats to an existing Sponsored Products campaign?

Writers' Cafe / Very disturbing email from ACX
« on: November 13, 2019, 03:03:14 pm »
Just a couple of hours ago, I got an email from ACX stating as follows:

Your ACX account has been flagged due to unusual activity concerning the use of your ACX promotional codes. While we support the legitimate efforts of our users to promote their audiobooks, attempting to manipulate the ACX platform and/or ACX programs is not permitted.

As a result, we will no longer provide you with promotional codes to use to promote your ACX projects. Please note that our evaluation process takes multiple criteria into consideration when deciding to place restrictions, and we take action based on those criteria. Going forward, please also make sure that you observe ACX’s guidelines.... Failure to meet ACX’s guidelines or agreements may result in restrictions against your account, up to and including termination.....

Please be advised that this is our final decision and we won’t be offering further insight or action on this matter."

Given that I can't even remember the last time I used my promo codes, there is literally no way they could have been abused, unless my account was hacked. Which is a disturbing possibility in and of itself. I called ACX right away, and while the support team was nice, they made it clear that there is nothing they can do except make a note that I called in hopes the internal team that handles such matters may see it and decide to reconsider the decision. What is really unbelievable is their statement that there is no possibility whatsoever "for further insight or action on this matter." What does that even mean? So they have exclusive rights to distribute our audio books, but can't be bothered to provide any recourse in case of an error on their part? Like I said, I haven't been using the promo codes, so this decision won't affect me in the short term. But it's the principle of the thing - not to mention the fact that if I have no way of finding out what kind of problematic activity supposedly triggered this decision, I have no way of preventing further "unusual activity" that could conceivably get me terminated!

Writers' Cafe / Recommended and popular items
« on: February 27, 2019, 10:02:46 am »
Hi! Has anyone else noticed that instead of also boughts, Amazon now has a carousel of books called recommendations and popular items? Does anybody know how one gets included in that list?

Writers' Cafe / Bookbub for book currently enrolled in Prime Reading?
« on: October 28, 2018, 12:18:59 am »
Hi! Has anyone had any experience requesting / getting a bookbub for a book that is currently enrolled in prime reading? Would Bookbub be reluctant to offer a free deal on a book that is anyway available for free on Amazon Prime Reading? would the number of downloads be significantly less in that situation? Or would Amazon anyway refuse to give free days during that period?

Writers' Cafe / Box set - with books that have been unpublished?
« on: October 07, 2018, 04:14:43 am »
Hi! I have a question. I used to have a series with eight shorter books, which I grouped into two box sets - each with four books. Later on, I reorganized my series into three shorter books. But I still have the old box sets out - and they are doing pretty well.
What I want to know is - Will Amazon and/or readers be annoyed if they buy a box set when there are no longer individual published books that correspond to the "books" in each set?
I ask because each box set has garnered significant reviews and is well placed in Amazons algos - so I really want to keep them up as is.

Hi! I have noticed that there are kindle versions of books that are listed in the best seller categories for books, rather than just kindle books- based on their ranking for the kindle version. Anybody know how to make that happen?

Writers' Cafe / Title change - impact on ongoing ams ad?
« on: September 20, 2018, 01:59:09 am »
Has anyone had any experience updating the title of a book while an AMS ad is in progress? Would that disrupt the ad and require a new one? Or would the details just update automatically in the ongoing ad?

Writers' Cafe / Why does frequent release work?
« on: September 10, 2018, 12:28:45 am »
One piece of advice that shows up here again and again is that Amazon rewards frequent releases. Can anyone explain how exactly that works? Do new books somehow increase the visibility of all the author's stuff, or is it simply that the new book appears in new releases, potentially attracting new readers, who may then seek out the author's other books?

Writers' Cafe / Recent experience with Amazon Prime Reading?
« on: September 07, 2018, 06:48:15 am »
Hi! Wondering if anyone has had recent experience being enrolled in Amazon Prime Reading. Does it significantly increase visibility?

Writers' Cafe / Recommendations for outstanding middle grade covers?
« on: July 22, 2018, 10:51:26 pm »
Hi! I am thinking of redoing my covers - anyone have any recommendations?

This morning I woke up to this three star review. While I understand the reviewer's frustration, I am obviously not thrilled:
"My review of the first five pages of this book is a 5 star. I'm giving it a 3 star because I signed up for Amazon Kindle at the same time I purchased the book, and have not yet figured out how to read the rest of this (and other books that I purchased from Amazon) on my iphone. Started out with a free 30 day trial. Was unable to read the three books I purchased on Amazon Tried to cancel it today 1/11 the day before trial ended on 1/12 but Kindle is still charging me for a full month, even though I cancelled the day before my trial ended. I'm sorry to vent my frustrations here on (...) review page, but I can't find any other avenue to express my concerns."

Anything I can do?

Writers' Cafe / Ranking v. sales before Christmas
« on: December 20, 2017, 12:22:03 am »
I was wondering - as Christmas approaches, do you have to sell more books than usual to achieve higher ranking?

I have heard that CS sometimes prints advance copies of paperbacks, in anticipation of high volume holiday sales, and pays the author at the time of printing (even though no purchase has been made yet). Anyone know if KDP does this too?

Writers' Cafe / More ebook returns than usual??
« on: December 11, 2017, 10:45:25 pm »
Hi I was wondering whether it's just me, or whether people are seeing more ebook returns than usual. It's gotten so I reviewed my ebook for formating problems.  I used to get few returns, but that number has all but skyrocketed in recent weeks.

Writers' Cafe / paperback returns?
« on: December 07, 2017, 08:09:22 am »
Hi, I was wondering what people's experience has been with paperback returns. Do you tend to get returns on Amazon/createspace paperback sales (particularly, say, after Christmas) - and if so, can you estimate a percentage?

When I view product pages of books in Unlimited, I no longer seem to be presented with the option of joining and reading for free. Anyone else seeing this....? Might explain the drop in page reads we've been seeing the past few days...

I have been noticing an increase in returns on Kindle books these past few months - in particular for middle grade books. Anyone else noticing this? Are returns more common for kids' books or middle grade (maybe because the purchaser is not usually the reader?)?

Writers' Cafe / Translating paperback rank into sales?
« on: November 06, 2017, 04:48:37 am »
Hi! Does anyone have any updated info on approximately how many sales are signified by a paperback ranking?

Writers' Cafe / Is this relevant to authors?
« on: November 05, 2017, 06:17:27 am »

I assume this refers to merchants who sell items independently on Amazon - as opposed to authors who publish through KDP. But am I wrong? Do authors have any obligation to deal with state tax issues?

Writers' Cafe / Major drop off in page reads last two days...?
« on: November 03, 2017, 09:10:49 am »
Hi! Anyone else experiencing a major drop off in page reads the past couple days?

Writers' Cafe / Book discounted by Amazon
« on: October 26, 2017, 11:09:00 am »
Does anyone know how/why Amazon decides to discount paperbacks? My book has been discounted by more than two dollars, which I understand is a good thing, right?

Writers' Cafe / Pausing an AMS ad?
« on: September 20, 2017, 01:29:01 am »
Hi everyone,
I was wondering whether anyone had any experience with pausing well-performing AMS ads. Does pausing an ad tend to disrupt whatever mystical Amazon forces are at work to allow it to receive impressions and clicks? When it is restarted, does it usually pick up where it left off?

Writers' Cafe / How are matchbook sales reported?
« on: September 18, 2017, 09:33:30 pm »
I have a report of a free giveaway on my dashboard, and I assume it is due to matchbook (there was no other free promo for this book). However the month to date sales chart has no record of a free sale. How are matchbook sales reported?

Writers' Cafe / Delays of several days in updating paperback sales?
« on: September 06, 2017, 03:10:48 am »
Hi! I was wondering if anyone else had experienced significant delays in reporting of paperback book sales. I know they report when the books ship, but it's taking a really, really long time (4-5 days after the corresponding jump in ranking). Is this usual?
