Writers' Cafe / I'm bored... need some help with cover art?
« on: March 14, 2011, 08:08:21 pm »
I've got a few days off and a new computer that I want to play around with. I've done several covers for authors here on KB and I've never charged anyone (one author has generously paid me after the fact - completely unsolicited). I'm not asking for money, that helps to keep the stress level down for me as this is just a hobby. It also serves to keep expectations low. ;)

I am not an artist in the traditional sense, meaning I can't draw or paint a character or a scene for your cover. I will be happy to utilize stock art that you've already found or search for free or low-cost stock art for you. You would need to pay for any art we decide to buy. I have a practically unlimited set of fonts that I can utilize since I've been collecting them going back to the 90's when I was in newspaper advertising.

If you're interested, please send me a PM with as much detail as possible. I tend to work in the middle of the night since I work graveyards and when I'm off, I keep that same schedule. The more detail you give me, the less questions I'll have to wait all night for answers for!

I have no idea how much interest this offer will generate, but please understand that I reserve the right to cherry-pick the covers that interest me. I also reserve the right to pull the plug (politely, of course!) for any reason if I don't think I can help you. I may also choose to end this whole offer for any reason at all. Is that enough disclaimers? ;D

The Book Corner / Lee Child profile on CBS' Sunday Morning 10/24
« on: October 19, 2010, 05:24:35 pm »
For any of you Lee Child fans (author of the bestselling Reacher series), he is scheduled to be profiled on CBS' Sunday Morning this coming Sunday 10/24. There is a chance it will get bumped a week to the 10/31 episode.

Just a heads-up for those of you who might want to set your DVR/Tivo like I just did! =)

Not Quite Kindle / Am I the only one?

...who gets really annoyed when someone posts a new thread with no content and just a link to their latest blog post?

This seems to be a growing trend and it's driving me nuts!

Okay, rant mode is off now. ::)

The KBoards Photo Gallery / Book Covers as screensavers
« on: September 18, 2010, 05:17:49 pm »
Hello all,

In the process of my polls, both here and on the Amazon forums, many people expressed an interest in having their current book cover be their screensaver. I think I'm going to try that for myself for awhile, although it may turn out to be too much of a hassle, especially for you speed readers. Nevertheless, I will post images here for the books that I'm reading, and will be happy to take requests. If you are requesting a cover, please post a link to the Amazon page for the book, to save me the step of having to find it and possibly using the wrong book cover. Also, I will automatically post Kindle and Kindle DX sized images of each cover.

P.S. If you weren't already aware of the Screensaver hack, you'll find all the info on NogDog's Kindle Minds Blog.

Not Quite Kindle / Amazing Race video --- How is she still conscious?!
« on: September 08, 2010, 02:25:03 pm »

Wow!!! Hope she didn't have a concussion from that!

So, I'm thinking if we can get a significant number of votes here, I'll try to write a letter to Jeff Bezos and beg for support. Please vote. Suggestions for drafts of the letter are welcome. Also feel free to suggest other voting options.

Personally, my 1st choice would be a user-accessible folder on the Kindle that I could put images in to be used as screensavers.

My 2nd choice would be an "app" of some sort, even for a fee, that would allow me to control my screensavers.

My last choice, if Amazon is intent on not allowing user-created images as screensavers, would be to allow Kindle users to choose from a list of available screensavers. Checkboxes or something similar, so I can just quit seeing the images I don't like.

What do you guys think?

Not Quite Kindle / Have you guys seen "Guy Walks Across America"?
« on: August 11, 2010, 08:07:26 am »
The entire "video" was shot with still pictures using a tripod. The effect is a bit jarring at first, but really cool in the end!

If your internet connection is good enough, watch it full screen in HD, the images are beautiful.

Just saw a segment on our local news station. They also have some behind the scenes commentary with the creators of the video.

Kindle Accessories / DecalGirl for K3?
« on: August 09, 2010, 02:27:57 am »
How long does DecalGirl usually take to start selling skins for new devices?

Writers' Cafe / Okay... this has been bugging me.
« on: August 07, 2010, 05:28:25 am »
I hope I don't offend anyone with this, and I'm not a writer, so feel free to tell me to beat it.

I have noticed that a lot of authors are very poor spellers or at least are not careful in their posts on message boards. Some have typographical errors in their subject lines, others just in the body of their posts. Is this just a case of "letting your guard down" when you're here among friends? As a reader, it sure gives me pause about buying anything from that author when they can't even make a single paragraph post without a typo or two.

Just a thought... what do you guys think though?

So I found a really good source for high quality images from tons of new and recently released films. Anyone have a favorite that they'd like used to make some screensavers?

K2 Versions

DX Versions

With the announcement of the K3, I'm guessing there are going to be lots and lots of K2's and K1's put up for sale in the near future. As a seller, it might be worthwhile to note what kinds of books you have bought if you plan on leaving them on the Kindle you are selling. That may be a nice "value-added" feature that will help sell your Kindle to a reader with similar interests.

For those who weren't aware, when you sell or give your Kindle to someone, you should de-register it (from the Settings Menu). This prevents someone from making purchases on your Amazon account. You can, however, leave all of the books if you like for the new owner. They will remain on the device after de-registering, and also after it's re-registered to the new owner. The only difference is that once the new owner deletes them, they won't be able to download them for free again.

Added by Betsy. Please consider the Kindle Terms of Service:
"Selling Your Kindle

If your Kindle is registered to your account, deregister the Kindle before selling it. Deregistering ensures that your Kindle cannot be used to make purchases on your account. Also, once the Kindle is deregistered, any books, subscriptions, or other content you've purchased from the Kindle Store will no longer be delivered to the device.

Remove all purchased material from the Kindle device. Purchased Kindle content cannot be sold according to the License Agreement and Terms of Use of the Amazon Kindle. "

Forty-ton whale lands on yacht during Cape Town sailing trip
A couple who took a yacht for a quiet sailing trip were stunned when a 40-ton whale crash-landed on their boat off Cape Town.

The dismasted yacht struggled back to port under engine power

The pair were enjoying calm seas off the South African coast when the animal flipped into the air and smashed into their mast.

Ralph Mothes, 59, and Paloma Werner, 50, were helpless as the beast thrashed around on their 33ft vessel before slipping back into the water.
Miss Werner said: "It really was quite incredible but very scary. The whale was about the same size as the boat.

"We'd spotted it about 100 metres away and thought that was the end of it. Then suddenly it was right up beside us.

"I assumed it would go underneath the boat but instead it sprang out of the sea. We were very lucky to get through it, as the sheer weight of the thing was huge.

"There were bits of skin and blubber left behind, and the mast was wrecked. It brought down the rigging too.

"Thank goodness the hull was made of steel and not fibreglass or we could have been ruined."

Moments before the animal leapt it had pounded its tail on the surface of the water in a 'lob-tailing' ritual to communicate with other whales.

The shaken couple, who are experienced seafarers with the Cape Town Sailing Academy, used their engine to get back to shore in Table Bay.

Whales are a common sight in the Atlantic Ocean off the Western Cape coast at this time of year as they come near the shore to breed.

Thousands of tourists flock to the region's seaside resorts every year to spot the mammals during the South African winter from June to November.

Hermanus, a popular destination around 80 miles east of Cape Town, employs a 'whale crier' to walk through the town announcing where whales have been seen.

Let's Talk Kindle! / 2.5 fixed the full justification issue?
« on: June 18, 2010, 12:41:23 am »
I remember when 2.3.3 came out, VermontCathy had posted about the full justification "at all costs"... well I think that was fixed with 2.5.2 because in the book I'm currently reading there have been several instances where a single line doesn't go all the way to the right margin when the next word is really long or is hyphenated.

Good news, right Cathy? 8)

Suggestions, Comments / Problem with KB this morning?
« on: June 16, 2010, 04:11:55 am »
Sorry if this is the wrong place, but for some reason, when I click on "Show new replies to your posts." I am getting a list of threads going back to October! This is definitely not normal for me, as when I'm done browsing the board (new replies and all new posts) I always click the "Mark all messages as read" button.

I tried two different browsers to see if it was maybe a cookie problem, but got the same result in both.

Not Quite Kindle / Holy cow! Now THAT is a sinkhole!!!
« on: June 02, 2010, 04:53:44 am »
Maybe some of our resident authors can base a story on this...

A cavernous and almost perfectly round sinkhole swallowed an entire intersection in Guatemala City during a tropical storm. The hole is 66 feet across and plunges nearly 100 feet down. Geologists said that the circular shape suggested a cave formation underneath, but what exactly caused the sinkhole was still a mystery...
