Writers' Cafe / Strange Amazon Review Behavior
« on: July 10, 2018, 06:20:33 am »
Last week, I had 54 reviews. Not much (I don't promote at all) but had a 95% 5 star rating. Been that way for ages.

This week one (or 2?) of the 5 stars disappeared. A 4 star materialized from 2016, I guess through a time warp. It was not flattering, in fact wrong, but that's another story.

Has anyone else had the reviews come years late?

Writers' Cafe / When should I lower prices for a Promo?
« on: March 31, 2016, 12:36:54 pm »
Hi Folks! I'm sure this question has been asked many times: When should I lower the price of my book before the promo kicks in?

I've done it before with Amazon; usually the day before gives it plenty of time for the price to adjust. This time I am adding iBooks and Nook. Do they take any longer?

Thank you for your time. Cheers! John

Writers' Cafe / What to do with a short story?
« on: July 17, 2014, 10:59:25 am »
I’ve written a short story about two southern boys who create their own firecracker in 1973. Hilarity ensues.

It is only about 6K in length. Have no idea what to do with it. Should I:

Submit it as a Kindle short?
Put it up for free on my blog?
Send it to the local newspaper?
Join other authors to publish in a short story anthology?
Make photocopies and pass it to strangers from a street corner?

Any suggestions (or links) would be appreciated. Cheers!

RE: Amazon Vine and Publishers Weekly Reviews. I'm just wondering if we're allowed to post them on our Amazon book page as yet. Also, do we have to post the whole thing, or can we just use the best snippets? Any idea? Cheers! John

Writers' Cafe / Will changing my keywords mess up my ranking?
« on: May 07, 2014, 11:05:54 am »
It's been bothering me for some time; my Amazon keywords aren't precise. Thanks to you kind folks at the Cafe, I know how to change them now. My book is about how a Filipino boy and his family survived WWII. I'm told I should list it as a "coming of age" novel.

Here is my current imprecise keyword ranking:

#46 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Literature & Fiction > United States > Asian American
#54 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Literature & Fiction > Historical Fiction > Asian
#55 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Literature & Fiction > Historical Fiction > Japanese

Would I be shooting myself in the foot to list it as a coming of age novel? Can I still keep it historical? I'd appreciate any advice.

Writers' Cafe / Spinning Ball of Death on Amazon Dashboard
« on: April 18, 2014, 06:59:21 am »
Hmm. This weekend is my first free promo ever. To my chagrin, I find that the ranking to "Arts Deco" has disappeared off the sales page. I go to author's dashboard–it won't open– just the spinning ball that says it's loading.

What evil sorcery is this?! :-\

Writers' Cafe / Createspace Ideas?
« on: November 03, 2013, 06:47:42 am »
After months of procrastination, I am about to push the magic button that will publish my novel on Createspace. Other than giveaways on Goodreads, does anyone have any other ideas on how to promote it? I'd hate for it to be just another vanity press.

Writers' Cafe / I'm # 38 in Japanese?
« on: October 05, 2013, 07:09:46 am »
My wonderful but poor selling book had a few sales last night. :) and I also got a ranking of 38 in the Japanese category. My book is about a Filipino family in world war 2. Stupid question: Did Amazon put me in the Japanese category because the word appears in my book description?

Anyway, I have the rest of the day to brag that I'm in the top 40, so it will be a happy Saturday.
Cheers to all! I love this place. John

Writers' Cafe / Createspace Book Cover Question: CMYK or RGB?
« on: September 12, 2013, 08:04:29 am »
Hi Folks!

I just got the proof copy of my soon to be printed Createspace book. The cover turned out butt-ugly: over-contrasty with dark, muddy colors. I was wondering if it's because I sent an RGB file version. Any hints or tips to make a more reliable out-put would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! John
