Writers' Cafe / What's going on at amazon?
« on: August 21, 2013, 06:12:58 am »
Does anyone know what's going on at amazon? The website was down on monday, and for me it was something like 30-45 minutes. (I sat at my chair clicking the link every couple minutes) I read in a news article that they lost $120k a minute, which would be over $5,000,000 of loss  :o

Their review page has changes on it. The algos changed. My book sold an extra 60 books from a small promo, then after amazon went down my book was listed on page 4 instead of two, and that's after a promo!  >:(

Author rank keeps breaking, books aren't listing in the proper categories, etc.

Then when I contact them I receive the exact same canned answer, which is not normal. "The technicians are fully aware of the problem and are working to fix the issue. I'm sorry but there are currently no estimates for when it will be fixed. I'm sorry about the inconvenience this may cause you."

Does anyone have any ideas what might be going on?

Writers' Cafe / Behold! The Power Of Free!
« on: August 14, 2013, 08:04:34 pm »
I thought it would make a funny title to say, "Behold The Power Of Cheese Free!"

But At any rate I wanted to let some of you know what's been going on. A few of you already know that I was contacted by a publisher recently. But what caught their attention was my FREE BOOK, not my paid books. For obvious reasons they didn't want to purchase the rights to the book (being free and all), but they saw I had some potential.

As some of you also know I'm a non-fiction writer, and being such they asked me to send in some book proposals. After all has been said and done, I came to the conclusion that I have more power, flexibility, and profit as a self-pubbed author.

It felt SO good to be approached by a publisher, and even better to turn them down.  8)

But I just wanted to encourage you about free books. People see them and notice you. You get more visual, and can begin creating a following with them. But I think it's good to mention that not only consumers are seeing your books, but publishers and other professionals as well.
Could you expect to be contacted by a publisher for having a free book? I don't think that's an ordinary occurrence. They're in the game for profit. But being free gets your books more visual, and there are many more eyes looking at it than you think. My free book is far more visual than my paid and it got me noticed. In one way or another it'll get you noticed to.

And one last note! Always have a print book for your free e-book...... I recently got slammed with requests for a print version and I was being stupid and never made one!  :-[

I really didn't think it mattered but hey a couple bucks is a couple bucks right?

Now I know that most of you on here know all this stuff about perma-free already, but I hope it's an encouragement to you.  ;)

Writers' Cafe / How long does it take for price matching to take effect?
« on: August 14, 2013, 07:46:12 pm »
I don't currently have a title to free price match. I may have one soon though. my last one took 3 weeks all organically. but how long does it usually take if I have people complain about it? and how many people does it take? is there a golden number that seems to work?

Has anyone else had issues with d2d generated documents not spacing paragraphs correctly?

I have them spaced in my word document but their generator doesn't recognize them and it make my book look terrible  :'(

Does anyone know of a way to fix this?

Yeah I'm clueless I know.  ::)

But I am starting to wade in deeper waters now and I have no clue why there are two publishing platforms on barnes and nobel. What the heck is that about!? I am so confused!  ???

What's the difference between the two and what should I be doing to maximize profit?

plz help me! :'(

Writers' Cafe / how long does it take to make an epub on D2D
« on: August 06, 2013, 11:58:23 am »
How long does it take on average to make a epub file on D2D's generator? I know smashwords takes 2 hours of fidgeting to get it to work, at least for me it did. ::)

but how long does D2D take?

If you've been published for a while have you seen KDP change their terms of service ever? For example did they used to pay more than 35% for $.99 novels?
Understanding the frequency, rate and depth at which they make changes can help every understand how secure their income will be for when the go full time.

I fear that in years to come they may change the royalty rate of a $2.99 book. I'd like to know what Im up against and how often they do it.

Writers' Cafe / Does D2D have their own version of "Meat grinder"
« on: August 01, 2013, 10:05:55 am »
I don't know how to make an epub from scratch according to apple's requirements. Does Draft to Digital have their own version of "Meat grinder?"

On the news amazon is set to release the new kindle fire for this september. It's projected to be a really heavy hitter in competition, and if sales go up what will that mean for us?

Here's the news article: From kindling to inferno: Meet the next-gen Amazon Kindle Fire

What are your thoughts?

Writers' Cafe / Changes on Amazon?
« on: July 29, 2013, 11:30:15 am »
Hey is it just me or did amazon change their kindle search. I thought it used to give you a short list on a page, but now it has touch screen friendly icons.

Maybe i'm just slow but I think this a new feature. Well at least I noticed it about a week ago. ???

But what do you think of the changes? If you go to "kindle" department on amazon the search it will bring up a touch screen friendly list. And a BIG list at that. I feel like it makes us more visible because now I'm on the first page of a big list and not the fifth of a small one.

What are your thoughts?

I was contacted by a publisher which is considering acquiring one of my books and they asked for my agent. I don't have an agent  :'(
They didn't give an official offer, but what should i do?

My sales are down. Like everyone's. I'm working on some advertising to compensate, and other projects and I'm holding well.

For those of you who have weathered a summer in publishing already, when do you notice sales beginning to bump back up? Is there a month you can in it on?
August? (hopeful here ;D)  September?

But which would you recommend I choose and why? Pros and cons please!

Can I only post one book per month like bookbub, or can I do as many as they will accept?

Writers' Cafe / Can customers return books at Apple B&N or Kobo?

Writers' Cafe / Need help with review question
« on: July 08, 2013, 09:10:27 am »
I recently had a good reads giveaway and contacted those who added my book for a review in exchange for a gifted copy. A few of them said yes, and a couple said they would review more than one.  ;D

But my question is if I suddenly get a rush of reviews will amazon delete them? I heard that they will do that, but I don't know if it's true seeing that they trickle in on all but one title which has several per day.

Should I gift them books slowly rather than all at once? What are your thoughts?

I've seen a lot of posts lately in regard to slow sales, or strange times for sales to happen so I thought I would let you know what I did.

I noticed that my own sales had dropped significantly. Then over night I would have a bunch of sales. So I had a hunch that reporting was slow or messed up. (But I didn't realize how slow...)

I decided to get a couple of buddies of mine and we ordered several different titles of my books. I also bought one that never sells, to make sure I'm getting the sales correctly.

Everyone was charged, everyone had the product in hand, but my royalties didn't come through for almost 24 hours.  :o While this happened my sales rank dropped continuously, even though the sale was made and everyone was charged.   >:(

I watched my books slip off the charts, and my rank fall. Both my author rank and sales ranks. Then late at night they all went through together almost 24 hours later. Even though they were bought at different times of day, they went through all at once. Does anyone know what happens to a sales rank when they get a bunch of orders at once and then gets nothing for a while? Well needless to say my books are reflecting such a pattern in rank. Spike fall spike fall. Even though sales are made through out the day, as I've tested.

I have tested before and had different results. I'm beginning to wonder if some of my sales never get reported at all. So I've come to the conclusion that we probably should be checking our books from time to time, to see if royalties are being reported properly. From now on I'll be checking 2-3 times per month.  :-X

Has anyone else noticed this at all? please leave a comment and let me know!  ;D

PS yes I know amazon had maintenance last night on reporting but this was a couple days ago.  ;)

I should also add that when my books are choppy on the charts (all sales at once) their sales get worse and worse until they drop off completely. I wonder if this is happening to some other people. But that's part of my theory here, Sales get reported to close together affecting sales rank and so precious sales are lost. But if nothing else then it's the midsummer sales blues!  ;D

I am constantly struggling with bugs in the system. Every time my book goes free I have to file a complaint to get it properly listed. I sold many books in the past two days and I have no sales rank coming off of a promotion. But I have no sales rank on the product page, and my author central page gives it a "free sales rank" I am constantly having issues with select and it's driving me crazy.   ???

I already contacted amazon with my issues and know how to get them resolved. But I wanted to know, is anyone else experiencing ongoing bugs in the kindle platform, or am I the only one?  ::)
