Let's Talk Kindle! / Which Kindle devices can do text-to-speech?
« on: October 27, 2015, 05:20:10 am »
I currently have a Paperwhite 1 and 2 plus an IPhone and IPad. I don't think Text-To-Speech works on any of these devices. Does it work successfully on all Kindle Fires and are there also Android devices it also works on? What about the Voyage?

Best Buy is offering a sale on Thanksgiving only on full size IPads for $60.00 off. It's online only if you buy the one without 3G. In story only if you buy with 3G.

This sale is for the IPad 4, IPad 3 and IPad 2 but not the Mini.

Although I just bought my IPad a few days ago, I went ahead and purchased one online to get more memory for only $40 more than what I paid for the one I have. I'll be returning the one I have as soon as the new one arrives.[promotion%2C+synonymns]&_D%3Ap=+&pu=defaultusr&_D%3Apu=+&pt=1353564001&iht=n

Apple devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod...) / Just got the IPad 4
« on: November 21, 2012, 07:24:43 pm »
I ordered the new Kindle 8.9 32GB in September and it arrived last Friday as expected. What I didn't realize was when I had my sisters IPad 2 for about 24 hours how big of an impression it had on me. I don't want to talk negatively about the new Kindles because so many are excited about theirs. But as soon as I turned it on and was staring at the huge carousel I knew it wasn't for me. I have an original Kindle Fire and thought I had gotten used to the carousel but I just didn't  want to keep seeing it.

I tried it for 24 hours but really didn't love it so I went to Best Buy to check out the IPad 4 and Mini. I absolutely fell in love with both. I bought the IPad 4 :) I went with the larger screen because I also have a Paperwhite for carrying around a lightweight reader.

I love this so much that Amazon may have lost a future Kindle customer. I love the Kindle app on my IPad and the way the pages look like they are turning instead of just sliding.

I love being able to create my own apps for all my favorite websites. I love the size of the screen and the clarity. I love the bright pink Smart Cover as well. I love the way the calendar looks on the IPad, I didn't like it on the new Kindle.

I also love the Reader Button when I'm on the Internet. There is so much more to learn about this new device :)

For some reason using ITunes is a bit confusing to me but I will keep working on figuring it out.

At this point it's tempting to sell my Kindle Fire and get the IPad Mini.

I also only got the 16 GB and am wondering if I should return it for a 32GB. Will I be sorry I didn't get more memory?

I also got the black but really loved the white color. For all you that have a white Mini or IPad is there a glare on the screen? I don't want to get a skin but if I decide to return this device to add more memory I may also switch and get the white too.

Is there a benefit ordering directly from Apple?

Let's Talk Kindle! / Kindle Touch 3G+Wifi with special offers question.
« on: August 14, 2012, 06:29:29 pm »
A friend just received a Kindle Touch 3G+Wifi with special offers today for her birthday. So far she is loving it :)

We connected her to my account and she is having fun downloading some books from my archives. She doesn't have WIFI in her home so she is relying on the 3G connection. She was planning to travel soon and was hoping to be able to occasionally check her email from the Kindle. I know with my keyboard kindle 3G I could do that but she isn't able to do anything wireless using 3G except download from archives or go to the Kindle store.

Did Amazon change this so that people with Kindle touch can't use internet for non-Amazon things even though they have 3G or is it because she has special offers and so if we upgraded to no longer have special offers she would then be able to check her email from 3G?

PS: I also have a Kindle Fire and love it but WOW, I instantly fell in love with her Kindle Touch too :)

Thanks for your help!

Fire Talk / Questions for someone with both a Kindle Fire and Nook Color
« on: November 20, 2011, 02:08:55 pm »
I have a K3 and a rooted Nook Color. I love both of them but can't stop looking at the Kindle Fire.

What are some of the advantages of the Kindle Fire over the Nook Color?

I love night time reading on the Nook Color because of the back lit screen but the browser for internet use is just mediocre for me. I don't use it for internet use as much as I thought I would. I do have the Kindle app on it but am not a fan of the android Kindle app for some reason. I prefer the Kindle for Kindle books.

I also love that I can download DRM protected books on the Nook Color without breaking the DRM. Can you do this on the Kindle Fire?

I love my K3 for daytime reading, especially for highlighting and notes. I also love the pearl Ink screen from daytime reading.

I can't highlight and underline sections of a book with Nook Color. Does anyone know if you can do this with the Kindle Fire?

Also how does internet browsing compare for the Fire and Nook Color?

Also it's more complicated removing sideloaded books and PDF's on the Nook Color since I have to hook it up to my computer and manually take it off. On the K3 I have the option to just delete it.

Do you still have the option to just delete sideloaded items on the Kindle Fire without hooking it to your computer?

I have some newsletters on my Nook color with lots of pictures and articles. I like being able to pinch and zoom to see the words bigger and use the touch screen to move the articles to different columns. Can you do this on the Kindle Fire?

I've been reading lots of good reviews about how lots of people are enjoying streaming and apps on the Kindle Fire but I haven't seen these other questions asked yet.

Other (non-Kindle) eReaders / Nook Color has a competitor!
« on: December 20, 2010, 12:29:33 pm »
I got this email this morning from Creative Zen. They have an entertainment tablet that looks like it is the rival to the Nook Color. I'll be interested to see how people like this one.

I know that a number of us have more than one ereader so that we can take advantage of library books and free books from other sites so I thought I would mention that there are currently 12 free christian books available if you have an ereader that will open EPUB's. I don't know they are all EPub DRM's or if any are DRM free and can be converted to Kindle format.

Other (non-Kindle) eReaders / BN changed their return policy on all Nooks
« on: December 12, 2010, 07:11:49 pm »
After reading so many reviews of the Nook Color, I went ahead and bought one a few days ago. I was intending to try it out for the Christmas holidays knowing that chances of falling in love and keeping it were high but thinking that if I just couldn't get used to the weight, short battery life and LCD screen that would consider returning.

While in the store talking to the BN employee they said that the return policy on Nooks have changed. They will not except returns with money back for any reason. If the device is defective they will exchange it but returns are no longer possible.

I bought it anyways and love it but just thought others might want to know about the change.

Other (non-Kindle) eReaders / Sony touch page swipe tip :)
« on: November 22, 2010, 03:18:00 pm »
I think I found the way to make my Sony PRS350 page swipes work without highlighting text.

I realized that if you are swiping straight across or at a downward angle the touch screen can think you are wanting to highlight or look up a word.

But every time I do the page swipe at a slight upward angle it never happens. So when I turn a page I always swipe from a lower position on the right side and swipe in a diagonal line upward to the left.

I've only been doing this one day but it has worked every time.

Archives / For Sale: Strangedog Cover for Kindle 1 (New) Photos Added
« on: November 17, 2010, 02:01:50 pm »
I'm selling my Strangedog cover for a Kindle 1. I think it was called Colors. It is black with very bright and vibrant multicolored flowers on it. It is new, never used. When I got it, I got my M-Edge cover the same time and decided to use the M-Edge cover instead.

It has been stored in my closet and is in original condition.

I'm asking $35.00. This includes free shipping in the US. Payment to be made by either Gift Card, Smashwords Gift Card or Borders Gift Card. I would like to be able to get EPub books.

Archives / For Sale: Kindle 1 in orginal box and original cover
« on: November 17, 2010, 01:49:47 pm »
I'm finally ready to sell my beloved Kindle 1. I still have all the original pieces that came in with that unique box.

You would receive the original K1 with 3G, the box, power cord, usb cord, original black cover, instruction booklet that came in the box and I even put the original plastic piece that was on the screen back on it.

I bought it Dec 2008. The left forward page button is very slightly lower than the left backward page button but I received it that way from Amazon. The button works perfectly. I just didn't want anyone to think I was hiding a tiny defect.

I did replace the battery April 2010.

It is still in terrific working condition. It currently has a decal girls screen saver on it so the authors don't show when it is asleep. It also has the book "The Christmas Sweater" by Glen Beck on it.

I can remove both and do the factory reset if you don't want them.

I'm asking $120.00. This includes free 2-3 day Priority Shipping within the US. Payment would be made either by money order or to my PayPal account.

Other (non-Kindle) eReaders / Sony 350 Touch questions
« on: November 13, 2010, 05:00:07 am »
I still haven't decided about getting the Sony 350 Touch. But I was hoping someone that knows about Sony Ereaders could answer a few questions.

1. With Sony's is there a way to download samples before buying books?

2. I know that I couldn't buy BN books but I could  buy Borders Ebooks right? A lot of books in the Sony store are more expensive than other places.

3. I don't like the standard font on the device. I know that the font can be changed but am I right that you don't add the new font to the device but you have to try changing every book in Calibre and then adding the book to the Sony 350?

I did get a chance to see the pink Sony 350 and fell in love with the touch screen and the light weight of the device. But I also now have a Nook and am trying to decide if I want to sell it for the Sony.

I love the Helvetica Font on the Nook. I also like the natural line spacing. It's easy on my eyes.  But it is heavy with a shorter battery life.

Other (non-Kindle) eReaders / $75 credit toward new Sony Reader
« on: November 06, 2010, 12:02:39 pm »
I just saw this on MobileRead Forums.

There's an offer on -- trade in any e-reader and get a $75 credit toward a new Sony Reader.

I have a Kindle 1 that has some screen fading problems. I also have a Kindle 3 that I love. But would never be able to sell or give away my K1 in it's current condition. This Sony offer is for any ereader in any condition I think.

I really want to add an ebook reader that I can borrow library books on.

I don't know what to do. The Nook or Sony 350 touch?

Let's Talk Kindle! / Amazon Android Tablet Possibly Coming Out Soon?
« on: November 05, 2010, 06:43:21 pm »
There is an interesting article today in "The Digital Reader" stating that there is a strong possibility of an Amazon Android Tablet to be announced soon to possibly rival the new Nook Color.

"With two online ‘zines suggesting strongly that Amazon is about to release an Android tablet and this particular columnist at Computerworld citing sources at Amazon confirming a “mass-market Android tablet,” it now looks as if Amazon is actually leaking the news."

Has anyone else heard anything about this?

I think I remember reading that this isn't possible. Can anyone verify that Library books can't be downloaded to either the IPad or IPod Touch?

I'm considering getting a Nook for library books but would like to know if either of these other devices work and have more options.

Hi Everyone,

It's taken me 1 year 8 months and 15 days but I finally finished the One Year Bible! I started a year ago when everyone else on Kindleboards did but got behind in my reading. When the new year started I was tempted to switch and read one of the bible formats everyone else switched to but decided that I needed to keep on going and finish in my own time.

I'm so glad I did. I have finally read through the whole Bible. A long time goal that I never seemed to be able to stick to before.

I'm going to start again. I really like the format of the OYB, reading Old and New Testament plus Psalms and Proverbs everyday. For quite a while it felt a little bit distracting to read the Bible like that but then came to realize that it is an awesome way to see the power and unending love of God and to appreciate even more the work of Jesus on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins.

I'm going to check out the sample of the Max Lucado study bible and decide which way I want to start again. Or I may try the Chronological Bible but read it similar to the OYB format.

Have a blessed day  :D

Not Quite Kindle / iTouch questions
« on: December 15, 2009, 07:24:14 pm »
I have been looking at the iTouch and have 2 questions for anyone that knows about this device.

I saw on a comparison chart that iTouch is compatable with Non-DRM EPUB books.

Are these the type of books that are used in libraries? Can library ebooks or library audiobooks be used on the iTouch?

My library also has some IPod Compatible audiobooks. Will these work on the iTouch?

I know that Kindle books can be read on the iTouch but I'm also looking for a good device to make use of free library ebooks.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Best E-Reader Recommendation for a Quadriplegic?
« on: December 03, 2009, 07:44:55 pm »
Due to a very serious accident, my nephew, 17 years old, recently broke 3 vertebrae in his neck. Right now he is considered tetraplegic (quadriplegic). He has slight moment of one thumb and the first finger in one hand but nothing in the wrists. He has the ability to move his arms but it's a jerky kind of movement.

He is still in the hospital and will be for about 6-8 more weeks. Soon he will need to try to start to do some school work after his daily rehab is done.

I currently own a K1. I've seen a K2 but not a DX. I think he may be able to turn the pages on my k1 with the way the page turn buttons work by pushing them outward. He wouldn't be able to wake it up on his own or use the scroll button (k1) or 5 way control (K2). I also know with the K2 that the page turn buttons move inward. I think it may be hard for him to turn pages on his own with the K2.

How does the DX page turns work? Is it just like the K2 with the page turn bars going inward?

Does anyone know someone that is paralyzed in both hands and lower body, that uses any kind of E-Reader?

I'm going to show him my K1 and see if he can turn pages but am very interested in how the DX and K2 are put to sleep and how to wake them up. Is there anyway to safely do that with your arms? Is it possible to turn pages on your own with arms? He is just learning to use a pointer for some things but doesn't have very good control of placement on a tiny area yet.

Any recommendation to get him back to reading as much as possible on his own?

Kindle Accessories / Blue M-Edge Covers
« on: January 03, 2009, 08:29:00 am »
I have been looking at the blue M-Edge covers. I know they come in three different blue colors, Navy, Sapphire, and Royal Blue.

I have looked at the pictures I could find on this board but must be missing where someone said the actual color of their blue m-edge cover on the same listing as the picture.

From reading other posts, I'm thinking the colors on the Amazon site are not correct with the way they acually look.

Are the pictures on the m-edge accurate for the exact color you get?

The best pictures of what I think are the actual color are on this board in several different threads. Would someone mind either reposting their blue medge pictures here saying exactly which listing it matches on Amazon. Or redirect me back to the pictures on the other threads and state exactly which Amazon listing I am seeing in the picture.

Sorry if it should be more obvious.

Archives / WANTED: Strangedog Serious Color Cover
« on: December 21, 2008, 06:15:20 am »

I love the look of the Strangedog's Serious Color Cover

I know that Frank, that makes Strangedog covers, only makes a limited number of each pattern.

With so many switching to the beautiful Oberon covers I was wondering if someone has one of the Serious Color covers that they would be interested in selling.

I just bought the Oberon Tree of Life with velcro and it was delivered 3 days ago. Although it is very beautiful, so far I haven't even attached my Kindle to it yet. It is completely new! I'm not sure why but I would still rather have the Serious Color cover.

I'm considering selling the Oberon but haven't made a final decision yet on that. I won't use it at all unless I decide not to sell it.

Most of you probably think I'm nuts but I absolutely love bright colors.

Kindle Accessories / New Choices in Vidu Travel Covers....I Think!
« on: November 29, 2008, 08:34:34 pm »
I've still been trying to decide which cover to start with and did another search on Amazon this evening and realized that the covers by Vidu are now listed differently with added colors!

I still haven't had time to figure out to put the picture in but I can post the Amazon listing.

Travel Package for Amazon Kindle, Includes Kindle Leather Case Cover Jacket and Travel Book Light (5 Color Options)

The price for the new colors with the light included are just $19.95 plus shipping right now!

For some reason the black color is $24.95.

The Amazon page doesn't show the pictures correctly for the new colors but I realized that if I add them to my Wishlist the colors will show in there.

At 19.95 I went ahead and ordered the pink one and it is supposed to ship early this week.

I still am going to probably get another one either the M-Edge or Oberon but I can take a little longer to decide which one to get now.

I really wanted one that can stand up on a table and then maybe a much nicer looking one later.

Introductions & Welcomes / Hello from Ohio
« on: November 23, 2008, 02:22:24 pm »

I'm new to this board and am excited to be reading some of the posts. My Kindle hasn't arrived yet so I'm anxiously waiting to hear news of shipment. I have been reading posts on Amazon's site for about 2 weeks and decided to switch over to here. Thanks to Leslie leaving the information about this board on the Amazon site.

I just saw the information about the $10 certificate from Coinstar. I've never used one of the machines but am going to now.

My Kindle hasn't even arrived but I'm already addicted just from reading everyones excitement about it.

I keep adding book samples to be downloaded so that I don't forget the titles before mine arrives. It's going to be so much fun turning the Whispernet for the first time.

This board has so much helpful information.

Thanks for all the ongoing enthusiasm regarding the Kindle. Some of you that have had it for a long time seem just as excited as those of that waiting for arrival. That's great!
