Writers' Cafe / AMS adds for wide books
« on: August 28, 2017, 07:49:35 am »
Hi, maybe a stupid question, but I keep reading that AMS now accepts adds from books that aren't KDPselect, but my titles say "ineligible" unless they are in Select. Am I missing something?

Writers' Cafe / BookBub and the Free 100
« on: August 12, 2017, 03:09:36 pm »
I know I should have realized this sooner, but are the top 20 free Kindle books each day just the BookBub books?

I have a free promo started yesterday: 2000 downloads yesterday, 2000 today. tomorrow is BookBub. Right now the book is sitting at #48 (It's called The Wideness of the Sea)

Guidelines lead me to believe the book will get at least 20,000 downloads with the BookBub over the next two days.

Given those numbers, it seems logical that everything in the top 20 everyday is there because of BookBub.

which makes me wonder, when does Amazon buy BookBub?

Writers' Cafe / BookBub Day! Results thread.
« on: June 23, 2017, 04:45:08 am »
Happy Friday! And it is happy indeed, because it is BookBub day for one of my authors, Cynthia Lott, for her book The Feathers.
I learned so much from these threads for my last BookBub, so I'm excited to share results.

June 18: Ranking 650,000 in Kindle Store. Selling one or two a month
June 19: Price goes from $3.99 to .99-- Facebook promotion to groups the author has been active with. Sales: 26 Rank: 14,000
June 20: My Book Cave ($15), more Facebook pushing. Sales 39  Rank:9,000
June 21: Booksends ($50), ENT ($40), Book Riffle  Sales 132 Rank 2500
June 22: Discount Book Man  Sales ? Rank 2700
June 23: Just Kindle Books, BookBub Rank at 9am: 2872  Thrillers/Ghosts: #11 Thrillers/Supernatural: 63

The book is wide through Pronoun, which is why I don't know how many sales yesterday, but based on rank I'm going to guess another 150. Have also sold about 24 copies of book 2.

Goal: Top 200 overall, top 10 in Supernatural thrillers, and of course, stickiness.

Writers' Cafe / Bargain Booksy: Give me a reason to keep using.
« on: June 19, 2017, 10:45:03 am »
Two duds in a row with Bargain Booksy, though I 've done okay in the past with Freebooksy.
Any reason not to abandon them? They show up on a bunch of best promo lists, but I did WAY better with ENT and some of the others.

Writers' Cafe / So you didn't write to market: now what?
« on: June 13, 2017, 10:03:35 am »
Hey there! I worked with a really great author to help produce his series, The Sun God's Heir. He's a nice guy, and the books are great, but I can't figure the market. The story is a cross between The Three Musketeers, Master and Commander, and The Mummy. Basically, hero and foe are Egyptians reincarnated endlessly through time. The first book takes place in 17th century France and features lots of swordplay and high seas adventure.

The books are doing okay, and have great reviews, but I don't know how to move them forward. Keywords? Promotions? We are pushing it as Historical Fantasy, and the first one is positioned as Sea Adventures because there is a lot of that in there, but I pity the person who reads it thinking it's going to be like Hornblower.

I feel like the creativity of the concept will allow him endless variety in time period and setting to continue the story, but at the same time is limiting him with an audience who expects certain tropes.

Thanks for any ideas.

Writers' Cafe / Picking Categories for Series
« on: April 18, 2017, 09:33:02 am »

Should book one and book two of a fantasy adventure series have the exact same categories, or should  you spread out a bit to cover more ground?

Sorry, no results yet, but boy I'm excited!
The book, The Unquiet Daughter, is on sale from today through April 4 for $1.99 (regular $8.99)

Starting Rank: #260,000 in paid Kindle
                       # 179 in Kindle/Memoir/Journalists
I'd like to see it in the top 1,000 for paid store and top #100 for paid bio/memoir

Here's the stack:

03/30 Bknights
3/30   Ereader News Today
3/31   Booksends
4/01   Bargain Booksy
04/02 Bookbub
04/04 Bookraid

I'm worried the book is $1.99, but even the low end of results from BookBub should put us in the range to cover our costs.

Many thanks to all the KBoards threads that have helped me figure all this stuff out. I can't wait to post the results. One question though: The book is now wide through Pronoun. Do I really have to wait several days to see results (besides ranking?). I did a Freebooksy last week on another title and really loved hitting refresh every 30 seconds!!!

Writers' Cafe / How fast does Pronoun update?
« on: March 28, 2017, 07:01:48 am »
Trying to find this in the Pronoun threads, but was striking out. I have a BookBub coming this weekend, and want to watch it obsessively like I used to do in Select. How quickly will I see sales on Pronoun?

Thanks in advance.

Writers' Cafe / First BookBub!! Please help me with stacking.
« on: March 14, 2017, 10:16:20 am »
Hey everybody, I've been avidly reading all the promotion threads on here for when I finally landed a BookBub for one of my authors (I'm a small indie/vanity press). Well, today it happened. I have a BookBub scheduled for April 2nd! It's a memoir, currently priced at $8.99 (I know, I know- not my decision) and on sale for the BookBub promotion for $1.99.

My questions is about stacking. I assumed I would want to arrange other promos in the days after BookBub to help keep the tail and momentum going, but I've recently seen people recommend doing the smaller promos leading up to the BookBub instead of after. Can I get some opinions on this? I do not want to miss my shot!

PS: After five rejections, BookBub took us the first try after we pulled out of KU and went wide through Pronoun. I don't know if that means anything about how they decide, but I thought I'd share that.

Writers' Cafe / Pronoun users help me out
« on: February 10, 2017, 02:03:18 pm »
if you use Pronoun please give me your title, especially if it's only .99 I'm thinking of using it and want to see what their formatting looks like. Also, any feedback on your experience with them.  Thanks

Writers' Cafe / Happy Friday the 13th! Add free or .99 spooky books here
« on: January 13, 2017, 04:08:00 am »
I'll start it off with Cynthia Lott's The Feathers about a 100 year old ghost seeking vengeance in 1970s New Orleans.

sorry -- promotion is not allowed in the WC . . . but there are threads in the Book Bazaar for both free books and 99 cent books -- feel free to list yours there. Friday the 13th discussion is fine here. :) -- Ann

Writers' Cafe / Promo results
« on: May 15, 2016, 05:00:06 am »
since I actively search for Promo information, I thought I'd post results here, in the hopes of helping others.

Finally had one of our titles get accepted to Book Bub (we are a small indie/ vanity press)!! Needless to say I was thrilled. The book was a gay literary coming of age novel, and that may have helped as the BookBub LGBT list is pretty small. Followed it up with Book Raid the next day and Bknights the day after. Book was .99 for the special

Results were:
Day 1:  465
Day 2:  72
Day 3: 52
Day 4 24

Have seen a definite uptick in daily sales since, even at regular price.

What I didn't think to figure in to the equation was that when you lower the price to .99 kindle lowers the royalty to 35%, which means I made almost exactly what Book Bub cost. So, good for raising ranking, but I was hoping to make some money. Charging anything over .99 doesn't seem like a deal. Does anyone have experience running Book Bub at higher price?
