Writers' Cafe / Amazon product page ebook page count glitch
« on: October 16, 2020, 08:22:40 am »
Exactly what the thread title says. The updated estimator that they use for the page count on the ebook product page is apparently very buggy. I published an 80,000 word novel mid-September and the estimator listed it as 234 pages. Linking the paperback, which is 340+ pages, didn't fix it and KDP support has been giving me the usual runaround of pretending not to understand the problem. Oddly enough the KENPC count was reasonably close.

If you've published recently or uploaded a revised book file you might want to double check your page counts to make sure that they're in the ballpark of where they're supposed to be.

Is there any way to download your 1099 from them?

Writers' Cafe / PSA: KDP categories
« on: February 19, 2018, 09:22:17 pm »
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but I don't recall seeing it so I'm throwing it out there. Apparently Amazon has mucked around and some of the categories available in the KDP book details are no longer visible to those browsing through the categories using either the web or Kindle interface. Most likely they weeded out some of the less used ones to clean up the category tree view. The categories still exist and you can navigate backwards to them from the category rankings shown on the book product pages, but that's the only way you can get to them now. This includes both of the main navigation trees, the top 100 lists, and the HNR lists.

Writers' Cafe / AMS flaking out
« on: April 28, 2017, 06:46:05 pm »
So I started two new campaigns on Wednesday which were both copied from the same original campaign. Both were approved and went live quickly. One quickly rang up over 21k impressions and clicks showed up as expected. The other one did nothing. No impressions, no clicks, nada.

Today I've been trying to copy a couple of old campaigns to relaunch new ones for books I just placed back into Select, but the new campaigns don't have any keywords. None of the ones I added are being carried over in the copy.

Anyone else seeing this stuff?

Is it just broken for me, or is the site down?

Writers' Cafe / PSA: New Streetlib offer for those going wide
« on: March 01, 2017, 05:23:50 am »
Streetlib has a temporary offer for US customers who go wide with them that offers significantly lower distribution costs.

  • The Classic package: StreetLib's distribution fee is kept at 10% and you continue picking the stores you want to get your books into.
  • The Deluxe package: StreetLib's distribution fee is lowered to 3%! if you publish all your books to all the stores we partner with (including Amazon)
  • The Premium package: StreetLib's distribution fee is lowered to 5% and you publish all your books to all the stores we partner with (except Amazon)

Signup form for anyone who is interested.

I am not in any way, shape, or form associated with Streetlib. I got the email from them and I'm simply passing it along.

Writers' Cafe / Kobo payments late?

Is anyone else's Kobo payment really late this month? Normally I get mine between the 18th and 24th.

Writers' Cafe / Review issue
« on: May 06, 2016, 06:55:33 am »
So one of my readers decided it would be a good idea to include spoiler information in the title of their review on Amazon. Since it's probably the most significant plot twist/reveal in the book, I'm just a little unhappy about that. Has anyone had any luck getting  Amazon to edit a review when this happens? I don't want the review removed or the review text edited - if readers want to open themselves up to spoilers by reading the reviews that's their business. But with the spoiler in the review title you can't help but see it.  :(

Writers' Cafe / Genre: Urban fantasy vs. Horror
« on: August 18, 2015, 11:05:27 am »
I've read a lot of both, but I'm having a hard time coming up with a good working definition to separate them into separate genres in the cases where the horror deals with paranormal or fantasy elements like vampires or witches.

What makes Stephen King's "Salem's Lot" a horror novel rather than urban fantasy? Is John Steakley's "Vampire$" better classed as urban fantasy or horror?

Writers' Cafe / Calibre and MOBI files
« on: August 06, 2015, 12:16:13 pm »
I did some searching and couldn't find this as an issue in any of the recent posts. I'm switching over from Mobipocket Creator Publisher to Calibre for creating my MOBI files for Amazon/All Romance/Excitica and such. For various reasons I am not going to use an aggregator like D2D to generate these files.

I'm converting from filtered HTML exported from Word, and I've got almost everything working - table of contents, start location, etc. The one thing I cannot seem to get it to do is to generate a MOBI file that correctly displays the cover in Kindle for PC. The cover shows up inside when I open the file, but in the library view it just shows the default blue cover.

Does anyone know how to fix this?
