Writers' Cafe / Any advice
« on: June 18, 2019, 03:59:36 pm »
I'm in a writer's group, which I will not name - but I feel uncomfortable. Some people dominate & some people brag (but that is nothing new).

However, when I write for their submission calls - I feel the audience is hostile and I cannot produce my best stuff.  I feel I submit 3x more stuff to this group than to some other groups in order to gain any form of acceptance.

I won't mention incidents and specifics or it might be possible to guess the group, but I don't know what to do. If I had no success at all with the group, it would be an easy choice - just walk away. However, they occasionally throw me a crumb... just making me feel very uncertain when they do so.

Writers' Cafe / What is a reader magnet?
« on: December 08, 2018, 04:29:43 pm »
One of the author sites I belong to allows free distribution of a reader magnet. I noted this, because all other promotions had a considerable cost. However, I'm not clear what a reader magnet is. I'm assuming some sort of freebie - and I started writing a few things as possible giveaways...

What sort of thing would you use as a magnet? Exciting so it attracts people... or part of a serial so they read more... a collection of previously published poems? New short stories? What would be the length?

Would you set up a freebie on Amazon as a means of distribution?

Not Quite Kindle / Has anyone else had a recent security breach?
« on: November 29, 2018, 11:57:36 am »
I received an email threatening to send out screenshots of me browsing porn sites to my acquaintances if I did not pay $800. It was obviously a scam - as I never browse porn! I doubt they know anything about me, so I'm ignoring them. Virus checker found no Trojan, although they had claimed to have loaded one.

However, they had one of my passwords, so I'm checking my log-ins on all my sites and memberships.

Relax everyone - it wasn't Kboards that had the breach, I just signed out and in again - and it wasn't that password.

Writers' Cafe / It's happened to me too!
« on: August 16, 2018, 10:16:50 pm »
After a recent revision, I received the dreaded request from Create Space to prove I owned the rights.

The things they WON'T accept are the very things that an original author has.... their personal testimony.

How am I to write a contract to myself? How am I to show a cancelled contract from myself to myself? Would swearing before a notary have any weight?

I have sent them what I can print out from my professional memberships.

How often does this happen, and how long does it usually take to clear up?

Writers' Cafe / Is anyone here able to navigate Streetlib?
« on: July 21, 2018, 05:39:18 pm »
Yesterday there was a tread on KB which seemed to be written by writers familiar with Streetlib. So far, I haven't even managed to create an ebook with them. Write helps me create an epub - which could be handy elsewhere. However, if I don't make it a "fixed" one, it messes up all my months of previous hard work formatting.

The download is too large for their publishing section however...

Writers' Cafe / Formatting for Kindle
« on: June 30, 2017, 04:24:36 pm »
Hello everyone:

I put a book out earlier this year using Create Space and Kindle Direct. I had very few headaches with Create Space (allowing for it being my first time), However, with Kindle Direct, I found the e-book program ruined my formatting everytime I ran a file through it. My book was a teaching aid, designed to help children who were experiencing speach delay. The parent/teacher sits down with the children and asks targeted questions regarding the pictures. My friend and I spent two years taking the "right" pictures to appeal to the under 5s and early primaries.

The printed version came out fine, but every time I put a file through the e-book converter, it moved the questions so they appeared with the wrong images. It also messed up the copyright page and even obscured some text with part of the images. I tried feeding rich text, word and PDF formats through. The html format was useless because it messed up before conversion. I tried adding extra carriage returns (Enter in the new speak), kindle ignred them. I tried adding extra pages between items, kindle also ignored them.

In the end, I turned the print pages into jpegs so they acted like images too. This maintains the formatting, but the print isn't as clear and I assume, won't respond to speech soft-ware. I'm not really proud of the kindle version.

Does anyone know how to overcome this issue? I'm worried it could happen even with a text book.

Thanks,

Cecelia
