Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: I still prefer my Kindle DX
« on: August 20, 2017, 08:46:53 am »
Have carried my DX all over, Indonesia last week.  Wife has a smaller one but I love my DX.  Had it for many years, replaced one battery and should probably get another spare for the future.  I think its just the size, not pressing a button every 20 seconds.

if it were possible I'd trade this old DX for a new DX.  It goes where I go.  Going to visit the Komodo Dragons, might have to beat one with it as I run.

Got rid of about 2000 over the last year.  The last bunch was about 100 on Viet Nam I donated to a library. It was hard to do, all those books seemed to have special meaning to me. Now with @ 1000 on the Kindle I still have many special memories with me.

I have and use daily, a DX, love it. Plenty of sun on the beach to read, have a reading light in both homes.  I've replaced the battery once and have another spare.  Have worn out 2 covers. >800 books.  I've looked at new Kindles and find them lacking - I only read books on my Kindle.  Wife uses an iPad to read - but not on the beach where she needs a back up Kindle.  I would love to buy a new DX just for a spare, I can't say enough about how much I like it. Its been west to Singapore and east to the Siani, don't leave home without it.

I've enjoyed most of Michener's books, many years ago.  The only one I could not get through was Poland, it was so dry.  Recall enjoying Texas.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: How Many Books Did I Read This Year?

I can go to my Kindle buying history, in my account.  It shows the date of every Kindle book I've ever bought, in order.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Does price matter?
« on: December 03, 2016, 04:32:33 am »
Many of my favorite authors are selling at $14-15.00.  I can wait a year or so for them to drop to $9.99.  In the mean time I've read hundreds of books in the $2-5.00 range. If I really like one I'll follow the author's whole series.  I'm guessing it doesn't cost anymore to format a $15.00 book as it does a $2.00 book. Often the spelling is better though.  So it must just be greed, too many hands out.  Lots of great books out there keep me busy until the $$$ books fall to reasonable prices.

I keep a spread sheet on Excel.  Author, Book, # or name if its part of a series (Alex #30 for Alex Cross) and a notation (H.P.K) for Hardcover, paperback or Kindle.  Gave up on paper years ago.  I got rid of @ 2000 hardcover & Paperbacks so this list keeps me from repeats and allows me to fill in series I have hit or missed over the years.  Works for me anyway.

Maybe look at someone like Tana French,  Faithful Place   The Irish is so thick but its such an important part of the story.  My sister is listening to it on tape and is having difficulty while it did take extra concentration while reading.  Enjoyed it though.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: New Kindles Coming?
« on: October 12, 2016, 04:25:50 am »
I have among all the kindles in the house, a DX which goes everywhere with me. I've replaced the battery once.  I've read >800 books on this.  I greatly fear this failing someday, its irreplaceable.  My wife's and father's kindles both failed this week.  I don't mind replacing them but my DX is a part of my life.  My only suggestion to Amazon is a re edition of the DX so I can depend on a replacement when I need one.  Yeah, its all about me.

In about a year when it drops to $9.99, I'll be all over it.

Replacement battery for a Kindle DX, easy to install.  Don't know about other models.

Bought a DX with a platform cover 5 years ago.  Replaced the battery but the thing is in excellent shape - the cover however, is well worn, its taken a lot of wear my Kindle didn't have to take. I vote for the cover.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: how many hours do you read?
« on: June 03, 2014, 06:07:10 pm »
I try to do 6 hours a day.  AS a Firefighter (retired) my 1st couple days at work I found the others sitting around the TV for @ 18 hours a day.  I picked up a book one day, then another the next day.  For > 20 years I read almost a book a day, 100 books a year.  Training increased, promotions and reading dropped off until I bought the Kindle DX, now I'm back to 100 books a year.  I have >500 books on the DX, I don't go anywhere without it.  Its been from Singapore to the Red Sea.

1st thought was this wasn't a good Harry but after a bit I felt him meld into the part.  I felt good about him.  A good pilot . I hope the series follows through.  The red headed rookie has assets for the fast track. I've read all the books, this looks good.

Found Lewis Grizzard on the Kindle..
Shoot low boys, they're riding Shetland ponies
Elvis is dead and I'm not feeling too good myself.
and several others.  Have a couple more Archie McNally books to read yet.

The Archy McNally (Lawrence Sanders) books just came out for Kindle.  I read several in the 90's and tried to catch up when the Kindle came along.  Anyway all 13 are available on Kindle now.

Outside of the Kindle DX there are a couple thousand books here.  It took quite a bit more that a few seconds, I entered every book onto MS Excel alphabetically by author.  Many authors I'll read all their books so I can use a column to number the books in order so I can pick up ones I missed or look ahead and make sure I don't download one I've already read in paper. I update a thumb drive I use to update other computers.  Works for me.

Caught this thread by accident, over a shared problem.  Yesterday, after >4 years I just couldn't download a couple books.  I was on WiFi, the DX said 3G, I managed to get the books into the archive (somehow) but couldn't get them moved from there.  Over the last day I just pushed it again and again and again.  I went through a whole battery cycle.  Finally the books showed up on my home page. Everything seemed right but I kept getting the error message about being unable to connect.  I'm guessing this is a Sprint/Whispernet problem and I hope some one gets a handle on it, I go through a lot of books.

Writers' Cafe / Re: John Locke -- was it really true??
« on: October 25, 2013, 05:01:07 pm »
Don't know much about the topic but I've read all his books.  Seems they were @ $3.00 each which goes to show the big names don't need to be charging $14.00.  Maybe John Locke is happy with a regular income and big numbers while more mainstream authors are driven by greed.  I tend to read many authors I read about here in the Kindle Boards.  I'm just not going to pay >$10.00 for an E book that probably costs the same to format until greed gets in the way. He does toot his own horn but that seems to keep prices down and sales up.

The Book Corner / Re: Anyone else addicted to Michael Connelly?
« on: September 14, 2013, 06:26:48 pm »
A part I really enjoyed, Harry was retired and a private dick driving in his BMW or whatever he bought himself.  Stopped at a stop light he looks up and waves or nods at Elvis Cole in his yellow corvette as he passes by.  Michael Connelly and Robert Crais I will download the 1st day.

The Book Corner / Re: Did it bother you that Tom Cruise played Jack Reacher?
« on: September 11, 2013, 05:08:21 pm »
I held my tongue until I saw the movie, Tom, about a foot smaller than Jack did pretty well.  I had to laugh when he walked into the bar and was a head taller than everyone else.  The Rock would have been great but I see Jack as kind of pasty white.  All in all he did alright but I'd like to see more thought put into the next Reacher if there is one and I hope there is.
