Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Paperwhite pages wont turn/swipe
« on: February 08, 2017, 07:20:41 pm »
You did a hard reboot or just turned it off and on again? If you haven't, try a hard reboot and if that still doesn't work I would contact customer service about it.

Thanks for all of the replies. Yes I did do a hard reboot or at least I thought thatb I did. Just to make sure, I did one again and all is well now so either I did not do it right the first time or it took the 2nd time. Either way, my Paperwhite is working again and I am back to reading in comfort.  Thanks again for all of the replies.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Paperwhite pages wont turn/swipe
« on: February 08, 2017, 08:36:48 am »
I have had a paperwhite since August 2014 and it has been used almost every day since I purchased it. Went to read my book last nite and the pages stopped turning. Unable to swipe to the next page. Tried turning the unit completely off and back on, no help, same issue. I am at a loss.  Anyone have any ideas what may be going on or how to fix it. I can read my books on my tablet but really like the paperwhite

    Thanks Phil

For awhile I did not go to the library as much but now I get the books from the library that I would have spent upwards of 9.99 on the Kindle. So I do spend much more time in the Library than I used to.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Updating an older Kindle.
« on: March 18, 2016, 09:27:13 pm »
We have 4 Kindles in our family the Oldest is a Gen2 from 2008 and it still works just fine although it is rarely used anymore. A few days ago I got a postcard in the mail from Amazon saying that my Kindles needed a critical software update done by 3/21 or they would not function correctly. I checked the Paperwhite, and the 2 Kindle Fires and they both had automatically downloaded the most current updates.  I had to charge up the older Gen2  Kindle. When that was done. I left in on the charger overnight but it did not update wirelessly.  So I had to go into the Amazon Kindle Page, download the update to my PC, transfer that to my Kindle Drive then download it to the kindle itself where I could update the latest version of software needed...Whew!  Just been 8 years but things have come quite a ways from that first b&w kindle.

Nice that they sent you a whole new unit. I had a similar problem with my Paperwhite2, just could not get it to charge properly. Amazon rep that I talked to figured that the problem most likely was with the charger, not the unit. So they sent me a new charger. They were riught. fixed te issue. I bet that was the same problem with yours.

Anything Else Amazon / Re: Thinking about letting my Prime lapse
« on: March 30, 2015, 08:34:58 am »
It all depends on how much you use Amazon.  We do the majority of our shopping on Amazon and try to make it all Prime items. While we now have to pay the taxes that we did not used to have to pay, we enjoy the quick delivery and the fact that we can shop from home. We also no longer have cable tv and use Amazon Prime, Netflix and Hulu Plus streaming for our video entertainment. This saves us more than $120/month in cable  fees which easily pays for the annual Prime fee. So, all that said, we like it. But if you don't use Amazon prime or take advantage of Amazon Prime Videos or the lending library, the $99/yr fee is probably not worth it.

OK thanks sorry I put post in wrong area/ I have already tried rebooting the Kindle, same result. Will call CS.

I have 3rd gen kindle Kindle HD, Kindle HDX, Kindle Paperwhite and an iPad.....and they all connected to the internet via my router and Comcast. That is until recently when the Kindle HDX has a WiFi connection issue. When I try to connect to the router now I get a message: "authentication problem"...... I am putting in the correct password.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Paperwhite or Voyage
« on: November 09, 2014, 01:16:45 pm »
My feeling on this. Or my two cents. Is that I already have a PW and it does a REALLY good job of doing what iot is supposed to do, The Voyage does it as well but just a little better (at least for me)  For the $199 price of the Voyage, I can buy a whole slew of books for my Paperwhite.

Very easy to delete several or more books at one time from any Amazon device.

Go to
Your Account
Manage Your Kindle and Device
Select (as many books or as few as you like)

I just got my PW today. Not new to Kindle at all though. I had one of the first ones that came out back in '09 and then bought a Fire when it first came out. The company I worked for gave me an iPad in 2011 and let me keep it when I retired. I have been using that for all of my kindle reading. I bought the wife a Kindle HDX last Christmas. Anyway, I was getting tired of using the iPad to read, it size and weight being a bit of a bother. So finally broke down and am now back to using a dedicated e-reader. I'm impressed by the lightweight, the long life battery  and its perfect size for reading. the back light is a nice touch too. All of my books from previous kindles loaded onto the new Paper White so the first thing I did was to organize them by setting up collections. Really a must do otherwise it is really hard to find a particular book. Fortunately it is really easy to do on the PW

Anything Else Amazon / Re: Amazon Prime? Is it really worth it?
« on: February 15, 2014, 07:06:50 pm »
We have had Amazon Prime for quite a few years now and find that the fee is saved very quickly in the savings in other areas. We dropped our $100+/month cable bill in part due to Amazon prime streaming tv and movies. With Amazon, Hulu+ and others, plus an antenna that picks up local stations, we don't miss cable tv at all. The free shipping is easily well worth the fee several times over in gas costs running around town. Items we buy on Amazon, we don't pay taxes on (yet).  The free book every month from the lending library for prime members is a big savings. Come Christmas time rather than rush around town with the crowds, searching for gifts, the wife and I sit at the table, do our shopping with a glass of wine and the gifts arrive at the door in a couple of days. Yeah, for us Amazon Prime is most definitely worth it!

Anything Else Amazon / Re: Amazon may raise the cost of Prime
« on: February 12, 2014, 04:34:57 pm »
We have had prime for some years now. At first it was just for the shipping, then the convience. then the prime videos and the lending library. We gave up our Cable TV at nearkly $100/mo. I got an antenna that brings in the local stations and with Amazon prime, Hulu+, Sony Entertainment, Pandora and many other streaming sites, we do not miss the cable at all. So if Amazon raises their rate to $100 we are still way ahead of the game after dropping cable.

Fire Talk / The wife wants my new HDX
« on: December 28, 2013, 09:51:39 am »
I bought a new Kindle HDX awhile ago and the wife has taken a liking to it. So I would like to give this one to her and set it all up so that it is in her name, her email, etc.
right now it has all of my stuff on it. So my question is, How would I go about doing this? Do I need to deregister it from my name? Would she need to set up a new account? or is there
a way that she could sort of just be added to the existing account and sign on with her name/id/password?

Fire Talk / Re: Kindle Fire HDX 7 vs 8.9??
« on: December 04, 2013, 06:44:31 pm »
I have an iPad4 and the Kingle 7" HDX... I love them both. The iPAD I use for wok and the larg screen is better for spreadsheets and the such. The large screen is also better for reading magazines, not as much scrolling is needed. That said, I can so just about anything else on the Kindle that I can on the iPad. On the Kindle (used primarily for entertainment) I much prefer the reader over the iPad, the smaller size makes it ever so much easier to carry around with me. The Kindle has one advantage of storing misic and photos in the cloud so you dont use up asd much room on the device itself. You can do this on the iPad but it does not seem to work nearly as well as it does on the Kindle.

Fire Talk / Apps from original fire avail on HDX
« on: December 03, 2013, 08:20:08 pm »
I went ahead and ordered an 32gb 7" HDX yesterday, with the Monday Cyber Deal and some Amazon points it was less than $200, pretty sweet. I'll have it tomorrow. Qusetion tho...Just wondering if the apps that I had set up on my orginal kindle fire will be available on the HDX?

Fire Talk / Great Cyber Monday deal but have a question
« on: December 01, 2013, 09:43:02 pm »
I just cant pass this up so time to buy a Kindle Tablet. Question tho: Is the $25 difference in the "Special Offers" (with or without) that much of a difference?  HD vs HDX .... Worth it?

Fire Talk / Re: Hope the new fire hdx 8.9 is better than the hd 8.9
« on: October 08, 2013, 08:54:09 pm »
Not to knock the Kindle but there is a reason that the iPad is the number 1 tablet on the market. That said there is a lot of competition and other windows based tablets are quickly catching up, I think that the Kindle is still much more of an entertainment device than a productivity one.  I like my i{ad for all of the things that it does and is capable of doing, still I would like to see them come out with an SD card slot. It appears that we will be getting another tablet as the wife has been using my iPad a lot, so there very well may be an HDX Kindle in the near future (wifes choice)

Just checked my Ipad4 version 6.1.3 is installed, no problems

I love the borrowing feature. It pays for a good portion of my prime membership in itself.

The Book Corner / John D Macdonald books finally available
« on: January 13, 2013, 05:51:08 am »
The books by John D MacDonald are now available as and ebook. If you have not read any of his
books you are in for a treat, if you have they are worth rereading. John D was probably the best of
the crop of Florida mystery writers. he passed away in the early 90's and all of the Florida writers since
have been compared to him.  While some of his books are dated now, you are still in for a whopping
good read. look him up.

Apple devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod...) / Re: Just got the IPad 4
« on: December 30, 2012, 06:57:47 pm »
I was finally in he market for a tablet. As a long time kindle user, I was ready to get the 8.9 Kindle but figure I would just check a few other before pushing "one click". I am so glad I did as there is such a huge difference in the in the other windows tablets, and the iPad. After using the iPad for about half an hour at the Apple store there was no question about which one I was going to get. There is a bit of a learning curve as, other than an older iPod, this is my first real Apple unit. But the outstanding display, the speed are so good. I have also downloaded the Kindle app so I can still read all of my Kindle books on the iPad if I want to. The front and back camera are very nice, makes using Skype very easy. There is not much that I cannot do on the iPad that can be done on my PC. I just have the wi-fi connection but then wi-fi is available most everywhere that I am these days so no need to spend the extra bucks for the 4g connection.
