Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Any Kindle covers that protect the "off" button?
« on: December 27, 2019, 09:10:25 am »
I have the voyage with the origami cover and I have a new paper white. But I use the voyage way more because of the cover. It covers the power button. I turn off my paper white accidentally several times a reading session and find it highly annoying.

I picked The Snow Gypsy. It is written by the same person  who wrote The women on the Oriental Express and I really liked it.  I thought about Smoke and Summons because it is written by the person who wrote The Paper Magician which I also liked but I think it may become available on kindle unlimited. I haven’t found a book on first reads in mail nags I liked but this month two  :) .

Note that there is no space after the ; and the query is case sensitive.

Thank you Ann, it looked right on my iPhone screen but that isn’t always on target.

Thanks again for fine tuning directions.

I have had it happen with all my Kindle’s at some point. To help it be more accurate I do a reading time reset when I notice it happening. Just open book you are reading tounch the hour glass shaped search at top, type in     ; ReadingTimeReset    It will give you result that that doesn’t exist or no term in book(something like that) at this point hot the back Arrow icon on top of screen. What you should see then is your book and on the bottom of page it should say “learning reading speed....”.  If you have a page number on bottom on page and switch to time left in chapter or book it will show the learn reading speed message and as you read it will begin to display more accurate readings.

The Book Corner / Re: The Great American Read on PBS

Arlington County, VA is doing a Big Book Read on line book club this summer -- the theme is #ohboytolstoy and the book is the P-V translation of War and Peace:

I've decided to participate as I can. There will be chats on FB Sunday evenings, a weekly wrap up podcast, and tweeting is encouraged. At the end of the summer the central library will host a viewing of one of the film versions.

I do think I've read this before, but probably an inferior translation, and I was in high school so likely missed A LOT! Not to mention what I've forgotten. :)

I think that is the of the best and  most reader friendly version available of War and Peace. I have a degree in English and had to read one of the older translations. I went back years later and read the one you linked (on kindle) and it made everything about the book more interesting and alive.

Since it looks like the Voyage is going away altogether, ...[/unquote]

Have I missed something about the voyage. I hope it doesn’t go away. It is my favorite kindle. I have it and the oasis and MUCH prefer the voyage.

Another entry in historical mysteries was recommended to me today.  One of the reviewers describes it as a "cozy historical".  For the price ($1.99) I am going to add it to the TBR pile.

The second in series is $7.80 now.

I am trying to keep up with this thread. So many good suggestions. I picked up the Captain Lacey volumes for only 99 cents. The others seem to be too expensive at this point, but I will keep my eyes open.

Thank you for the link and the find! I just bought it. I haven’t read any of her work so I’m looking forward to it.

No, I would not. I like it ok but I still read mostly on my voyage and the oasis is a backup.

I have owned various Kong miles since the original in ‘07. Right now I have a voyage, paper white, and oasis. I much prefer the voyage.

I had the same thing happen. The wheel on top left just kept spinning then looked like had spin but stopped. I finally did a hard reset, held power button about 30 seconds until screen flashed and the picture of kid under screen showed on screen  and it hasn’t done it since. I had to hold the button 25-30 seconds. I got the box  do you want scree off, reset...”. But I just kept holding button. When screen flashed 3times and picture came up I let go, that is hard restart. It doesn’t wipe keep like like a factory reset does.

The Book Corner / Re: The Count of Monte Cristo
« on: November 26, 2017, 09:20:11 am »
Yesterday I finished watching the 12 25-minute episodes of the 1964 BBC production of The Count of Monte Cristo. It was really entertaining. It followed all the plot points of the book (although some were abbreviated or happened off-camera but were talked about). It even showed the ending from the book, which no movie or TV series has ever done before. Of course it was B&W, SD, and letterboxed, but that's OK. It's even Closed Captioned.

It's nice to see the story done right for a change. Even if the acting is a bit low key in parts.

BTW, it always amazes me how nobody ever recognizes Dantes. Most of the films have him wearing a Van Dyke beard in his Monte Cristo persona, but not here. Artistic license, I guess.

Did they use the version of the book that censored out the lesbian relationship?

I was surprised to see I've read one in each category, The Help and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.  Both of which I read because I picked them up on Kindle for my mom as they weren't available in e-book form from the library in time for her book club. I actually enjoyed them both.
These are the only two I have read as well. I enjoyed them both.

I listen to audible books on my commute for work, about 1 hour a day and when I clean the house I listen with headphones.  The time seems to pass quickly and I don’t feel like I’m wasting time cleaning  ;) .

I just finished Colleen McCullough’s First Man in Rome and am now reading her second in the series The Grass Crown . Neither are available on kindle and both are around 1,000 pages, so I’m getting some weight lifting in as I read.

Tonight I started reading The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. It won a Pulitzer and National Book Award and was on the 2017 Man Booker prize longlist.

I read that several months ago and really enjoyed it.

This thread reminds me of when “we” were waiting for the first version of the kindle, the one with the roll bar. Everyone posting about delivery dates months away and the emails with conflicting notifications, and people trying to figure out how changing payments or deliveries moved expected dates around.  Ah,yes, the good old days. Didn’t we do it up hill both ways in the snow too  ;D
