In the midst of our regular email exchange discussing my edits, I received this career-choice-affirming commentary from a longtime client. I won't name him here, although I do have his permission (of course) to share this.

Here's what he said:

"...That's how much I trust you. I know you're not going to mess up my stories or books with your edits. The changes you make DO NOT change my story. They make it better about 99.9% of the time. I can count on MAYBE 2 fingers how many times I've reverted to my original prose vs. your suggestion -- based on preference and nothing more. When you're not 100% certain or you know something is probably "off," you notate it and tell me to reconsider and maybe make a suggestion. And almost ALWAYS you are 100% correct.

"...And then moving on to my writing getting better...it's because of YOU."

"You're the best!"

If you'd like to see what he's talking about, drop me a line and ask for a free sample edit.  I have a few scattered openings between now and October.

Self-publishing should still be quality publishing.

P.S.  I'll have to take a look at the Chinese cookbook.  My son spent a semester abroad in China and complained ever after about the "fake" Chinese food we cooked at home.

It's been a long time since I posted my original introduction.  Figured it was time to reintroduce myself.

I'm a freelance copy editor with a B.S. in Journalism and an extensive editorial background, including over 10 years as a legal copy editor responsible for correcting the California Supreme Court. I've been editing fiction and nonfiction for over four years now, with clients across the United States and around the world.  About two years ago, I left my day job and work for myself at Free Range Editorial.

I work with newbies, best-selling authors, and all the folks in between. I have a lot of experience working with translated material and books written by non-native English speakers.  My rates are among the lowest for editors with my qualifications.

I've got some openings in my schedule, so hit the link under my signature and visit my website.  Take a look at my portfolio, read what my clients have to say, and drop me a line.  Mention that you found me on the KBoards and get 10% off our first project together.

Cheers!

Julie MacKenzie

Writers' Cafe / Using Thumbtack to Find Editors?
« on: May 19, 2018, 08:29:54 AM »
Hello, Fellow KBoarders!

I don't know if any of you have used or plan to use Thumbtack to find an editor or proofreader, but as a listed Pro, I wanted to alert you to how the fee schedule works on our end.

They are in the middle of transitioning from Pros spending about $14 just to send a quote to a new arrangement in which the Pro sends a quote at no charge and only pays a fee to Thumbtack if the potential customer responds.  There are a couple of problems with this new system.  The first is that the Pro does not know ahead of time how much the contact is going to cost; it's theoretically based on the "value" of the job.  For instance, I quoted $100 to proofread a magazine article.  Surprise, my contact cost me $38!  The second issue is that unless the customer's first message says, "No thanks," the Pro gets charged some random fee. My "positive" response consisted of, "Thanks, Julie.  I'm out of town, I'll take a look at your website on Friday."

So, as a listed Pro (for the time being, anyway), I'm asking all you kind people who use Thumbtack to keep this in mind when you receive quotes. Being polite without clearly stating you're not interested will cost the Pro.  If you look at a quote and think it's too high, or you look at the Pro's profile and don't like what you see, please either do not respond to the quote or make sure that your response is clearly a rejection.  Otherwise the Pro is going to spend some unknown amount of money with no serious chance of landing any work.

Thanks for listening!

Julie MacKenzie
