Writers' Cafe / Re: so my sales crashed.... Did yours?
« on: September 12, 2014, 11:37:15 pm »
My sales have crashed so hard--that they fall with each book I release until I'm wondering if there's a point when I'll start owing Amazon money.

I have a total of 25 titles under a few different names and I've gone from $100/day to $5/day. For 25 titles. I'm assuming that when I release my next book, I'll be down to $2 a day. And this is with a Bookbub ad EVERY month for the last year, and with hitting the #1 Amazon Bestseller list a few times in specific categories. The downturn started about 6 months ago, but the total crash has happened this month.

Maybe it's market saturation, maybe it's KU, maybe it's algorithims...who knows. When I get to the point where 25+ titles earns me zip, that's gonna be hard to take!

That sucks.

Writers' Cafe / Re: KU thoughts

I didn't understand KU's limit of 10 at a time and immediately 'borrowed' 10 reference books that I want to keep. So - I guess, I need to go back and read them and pick a few to buy, because otherwise.... I'm paying $10 a month and getting nothing out of it.

Why not check if the book is no longer available on Smashwords, and then go select?

I'm not sure how long it takes. Please, let us know when you find out.

Writers' Cafe / Re: Where to Promote a Free Book - Fast?

I had the same question, but I just started tweeting a few times, and used the @names in the tweet - like this:
Quote
@kindlebooks @freetwitter @anothertwitteraccount #FREE This Sunday My Amazing Book http://shortenedlink* #werewolves

I'll do two more on Sunday for a total of 4 more or less identical tweets that MENTION 12 twitter accounts. People sometimes Favorite tweets they are mentioned in, and sometimes RT them as well.

Just with the 2 tweets I've sent so far, 2 of the owners of the twitter accounts mentioned are FOLLOWING ME... so, it works.

It's a little spammy - but if I do other tweets in between and I do it over a few days - it's not too horrific.

Writers' Cafe / Where to Promote a Free Book - Fast?
« on: August 08, 2014, 11:22:51 pm »
Decided to do a 1 day freebie promo on a title at the last minute. Starts 8/9.

Where can I do a fast (more or less instant) last minute promo to increase free downloads?

I know some others have received this email. Seen it on another board.

Second The Naughty List for promo on erotica. Better results than bknights and it was free.

Eelkat - curious about the words to avoid list.

You mentioned '18' as being a bad word to put in the title. What about in the blurb, such as "Content advisory: this story is intended for mature readers over 18."

The Book Corner / Re: Kindle Unlimited Recommendations.
« on: August 01, 2014, 11:25:27 am »
So, I've reached my max of Kindle Unlimited titles.  :o

In order to have over 10 in my library, I have to 'return' a book.

Is that how it works, 10 (unlimited my arse) rentals at any given time?

How do replacement/returns/etc affect the author's payment/royalties? If I read the book, or 10% of it, before return/replacing it, does that make a difference.

Who's got a link to the 'how KU works?'

Writers' Cafe / First Person for each MC - Chapter X: Character Y
« on: July 25, 2014, 08:35:15 am »
I just bought the first book in an extremely popular Paranormal Romance series, Vampire series, by Bella Forrest.

Each Chapter is in the First Person and let's you know who's voice is saying "I" by putting the name of the character after the chapter name.

Chapter 1: Sophia      Chapter 4: Derek

I've never seen that before.

If you've ever written or seen this style of writing before, what's your take on it?

The audible version came out May 6th. I absolutely love audio books and the added dimension a good narrator adds to the written word. Greg Tremblay did a sensational job narrating. His work with dialogue in particular stood out for me.

Just ordered...

Thanks, Arrington, for your interest! It's hard to know how to get the word out about audiobooks.

I've got two romantic comedies, books 1 and 2 in a series (though they are really standalone romances, just with 2 brothers in the same family):

LOVE HANDLES- When a couch potato preschool teacher inherits a fitnesswear company, sparks fly with the ex-Olympic swimmer VP.

THIS TIME NEXT DOOR: A very lovable geek falls for the plus-sized woman next door.

Both were narrated by the wonderful Tanya Eby, are Whispersynced, and are over 10 hours of hot, fun listening pleasure :D

Thanks to anyone who gives them a try.

Loving Love Handles so far....

Writers' Cafe / Tips for promoting a Podcast about writing?
« on: July 06, 2014, 12:04:29 pm »
I've been super happy with the downloads of the Indie Book Rebels podcast.

I've got a huge show coming up this week and feel guilty that, with rare exception, I never get any listeners calling in live to speak with the guests.

The show is coming fast, this Thursday, Simon Whistler (Rocking Self Publishing Podcast) and Bryan Cohen (Sell More Books Podcast.) on Podcasting to Indie Authors

Anyone got suggestions for how I can get interested people to tune in live during the show, maybe also how to reach/promote outside of kboards?

Writers' Cafe / Re: What's your take on Fan Fiction / Kindle Worlds?
« on: July 03, 2014, 02:42:12 am »
I guess I didn't understand that there was a way to 'sell' fan fiction. Kindle Worlds doesn't have very many worlds.

Are there other Fan Fiction markets besides Kindle Worlds.

As to the question of profitability... I did a little spreadsheet and made a chart of the rankings of the TOP 10 BOOKS IN KINDLE WORLDS.

The word is "Catspaw" correct? - In Game of Thrones that was used at times, I think, to refer to a hired assassin who was disposable - the one who took the 'dwarfs' knife to kill the child after he was tossed from the tower in book 1?

Anyhow - if that's what your going for than do not put a space.

Writers' Cafe / Re: Say no to stock photos

I would point out that about half of today's NY Times top ten in fiction do not have photos as elements in the cover.

Which means... the other half of today's NY Times top ten in fiction DO HAVE photos as elements in the cover.

They have a section for supporting PODCASTS so, if I ever got off my arse and updated the website - I'd consider it.

Writers' Cafe / How important is the first line?
« on: July 02, 2014, 08:27:31 pm »
Is the first line of a novel really all that important? Do readers who have been tempted by a blurb, or a book cover, actually put a book down because they didn't think the first line grabbed them enough?

Have you ever put down a book after reading the first line, or conversely, kept reading because of the first line?

Others have defined alphas well, but I wanted to add that you don't want to push it too far and create an alphahole. ;)

I'd suggest picking up a bunch of romance novels and reading them. Certain common traits are a lot easier to see in a story once you've familiarized yourself with the genre.

I've been doing that. I'm seeing a lot of gorgeous well endowed billionaires (or at least financially well-off) Alphas so far.
