Hi Mark, heard about the First in Free series and here's mine. Seeking the Veil is a story of adventure, friendship; and the exciting prequel 3-part series to the Epic Fantasy novel Veil of a Warrior.

Part 1 is Free on Kobo and elsewhere. With parts 2 & 3 $0.99 and $1.99 respectively.

I believe Seeking the Veil is a great bite-size piece of epic fantasy. A quick, easy to consume introduction to something much larger.

Welcome L.J. Yeah, lots to do taking the route on your own. But, then you have no one telling you no, and you own all your rights. I listened to a lot of business podcasts before I launched my first book in 2014, and despite lots of good advice heard, I didn't follow or find myself capable of execution.

Best bit of advice? Keep writing and be aware you'll probably want to go back and revise what you have out. I figure one day it pays off.

If you've got a solid piece, I suppose the second piece of advice would be to actively look for book reviewers that might like what you write. Most organic traffic to your book page will pass on if they see it has no, or few reviews. But beware, there are some services/people out there that "sell" book reviews. Get those review counts up, don't worry about giving your book away for free, and keep moving forward.

I donated 2 paperback books of Veil of a Warrior (560 page epic fantasy) to a local library in Vancouver, WA and they were very happy to have a local author involved and donating work. The books were put on the shelves, not sold for fundraising.

(And I had pretty much a 0 fan base.)

Probably depends on the library system.

Awesome points, thanks for sharing. I want to try something like this, this year. But first I want to try loading myself down with flyers and a few copies of books and finding a location that I can pass out info on my books, newsletter sign-ups for a giveaway, etc.

Low cost, maybe high traffic.

Sounds like some great numbers. I need to push forward with some more promotions myself. Anyone have any threads to point out as good resources for which to pursue?

I'm an epic fantasy kind of guy with barely any reviews. Seeking them out is slow work.

I did run a freebooksy in December and had 1000 downloads in 2-3 days with a continuing slow trickle. Haven't had any carryover purchase to my following books. I know I need to tweak my book description and eventually amp up the cover design, but well, it's on the task list.

Editing is one thing I'm looking into for this year. Any suggestions of who/where to look for an epic fantasy focused editor? Some of my favorites are Martin, Abercrombie, Brett, Tolkien, Rowling... I'd imagine I would want a similar taste in an editor.
