I got mine at best buy yesterday & yes this is an improvement over my first, just some small shadows at the bottom but does not get into the text and they are slight...

before I went I called the 800 line to verify stock & I told them that when I got to the store. Last night they said they did not have OK from amazon to sell them till the 28th, today they were told to sell them, so when I hit the other store I had no problem. I got lucky as its a small store that is in a smaller shopping center & is usually passed by, as Leslie said last night just have to persistent...

well I stopped at another Best Buy before dinner & they had them & bought one, lucky for me I had bribed my wife before I bought it  :) I didn't have to really she said consider that your anniversary present, I'm blessed to have been married 36 years to a very understanding women that puts up with my nonsense... now boy do I have too many gadgets but is there ever enough  :) it looks better than the one I had returned & downloaded & read a chapter before charging it up , will have to read some more before taking the ads off, I'm glad now that I stopped and looked...

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: K5 color
« on: October 20, 2012, 06:19:15 am »

They say this:
And you yourself say the K5 has an improved screen.  So, either it does, and Amazon would be opening themselves to fraud accusations by selling the K5 and K4 as the same product in its store; or the graphite and black are both the K5 and anyone ordering can pick the color they prefer without worry.

I would buy either one without compunction.

i agree with Betsy, Amazon could not and would not sell last years version just to get rid of stock, these are newer e ink screens with a lighter whiter background & darker fonts, I like the one I got in the black bezel...

I know the store manager & he looked I waited 30 or more & he called the other store to get me one it was no go, at least in my area of Maryland, its ok I was hoping to see a demo but nothing was setup ,

I went to 2 stores , they show in store but neither store had them, it was just a web update but neither store actually had any physical shipments, both said not till the 28th...doesn't matter...

Perhaps it is first come, first served.  Best Buy very well could have been in the queue with everyone else.

good point, didn't think of that, i'll be there tomorrow i'll take a look...

Are there only wifi versions available at the stores?

looks that way for my store but why wasn't back orders filled first, or were they? I mean its nice but I think it should be 1st come 1st served...

It was the wireless version, they didnt have 3g. Thought some of you might want to know.

I just check the 2 stores around me and yes they were available, I actually do not understand that if they are 4-6 weeks if ordered online?

i like e ink and like the k5 a lot & to be honest since I have yet to find a device I don't want  :) I'll probably reorder the PW as I did like it for its over all effect, it however did not hold up at night...I have been warned by my wife not to get the ipad mini , I guess I better listen, I like taking naps on the sofa but don't want to sleep there at night with the cat...

BenReem (haha. 4th replacement. legendary and helpful for those of us with ones we haven't been completely happy with). Thanks for the note about the warranty for the year... Great point. I didn't even think about that... I've been on the fence sending back my PW replacement within 30 days (already sent my original PW back) as day reading is exceptional on it (not enjoyable at night: two big pink splotches on the right side when i'm in the dark which bugs the crap out of me). Night reading was my hope but for now i'm using my K4 with a lighted case at night (which is ok and a better experience for me than the PW) and the PW during the day. I've been hesitant to put on this decal girl black matte skin (which solves all smudge issues - looks amazing on my k4 so i bought one for the pw) and to make collections but now i think i will. Thanks.

LarryB52. Do you have the K4 also? If so, could you tell me your thoughts on the differences since they're the same size and same PPI.

i have the k4 & the k5 is vastly better, whiter background & darker fonts & newer fonts, its done very nicely, it looks so good I though one time I had the PW & touched the screen to advance the page :) , it's really a nice device, I intend to get another PW but this is not a large expense yet gives you all the pluses of a newer device with an excellent display and is IMO day & night different than k4, I asked my wife what she preferred as I sat the 2 (k4, k5) in front of her & she reads DTB & she chose the k5 for all the above reasons...

you are going to have to trust me on this but try a regular 69 kindle has a very white screen & nice dark text... this reader should not be confused with last years, this years has a black bezel & newer screen, just a suggestion , I do want a PW but I want to see it fixed first...

Ben, did yuou end up with a Kindle? It sounds like you might never have returned your original Kindle PW and you are holding on to that.

An alternative could be to return the original PW if it is problematic and pick up one of the $69 jobs for the time being.

that's what I did its a very nice screen and is better than last years as I have that one as well & when you compare it you can see its a whiter background and a darker fonts,

They do have their chekc list that they have to go through. It is annoying but necessary. My brother used to do customer service for PCs. He would have people call in who would be complaining that their computer was not responding. He would start with "Have you turned the computer on?" And they would say that they hit the power button but the computer wasn't on. They would get upset when he asked them if the computer was plugged in but when they finally checked, the computer wasn't plugged in. There were folks who thought the CD drive was a cup holder and were baffled when he told them they had to put a CD in to get a program to run. It sounds stupid but there are folks who are clueless.

Which means that there are basic checklists that help desks have to run through because they don't know if you are clueless or not. So your saying the power button isn't working when it isn't might be true but there could be someone else who is doing something different and the problem really isn't the power button.

so you're saying I'm in the wrong & this behavior is acceptable , unbelieveable!

i did call ask for a Kindle CS, but both calls sounded to be send overseas, not saying anything except that I think they have a speel to go through rather than use common sense, If a customer calls & says that the power button doesn't work everytime because of a bad connection I honestly don't see what a reboot is going to do not after I did and told them I tried that...

« on: October 16, 2012, 05:31:23 am »
i say calls because I called back after the 1st one was rude and they were actually worse. The K5 has a connection issue on the power button and they are fussing with me about a reboot which I did & a reset of the device, they told me I wasn't holding it long enough. I hung up and the 2nd CS was no different. Basically I don't get it I've have 4 kindles and 2 fires but all the newer stuff will go back tonight I cannot & will not deal with this type of bad service...sorry for the rant, I got to get a heart pill...

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: paperwhite, buy @ amazon or best buy
« on: October 12, 2012, 07:59:12 am »
Hearing about all the issues people have been having with paperwhite I think when I buy one I will do it at my local best buy (a 10 minute away exchange if needed vs shipping back and forth..). I do realize that people w defect issues tend to vocalize them more then people happy with their purchase but frankly I am surprised at all the problems people are having w paperwhite. Thoughts?

I actually disagree with Ann, Amazon is backed up 4 to 6 weeks with orders, so buy where your comfortable & in Best Buy they will eventually have a demo unit you can look at to see if you'll like it. As far as returns go best buy has never hastled me on a return & I have returned numerous laptops for issues & since I am a best buy silver member I get 60 days to return items I don't like. Also if you decide to return it you get a credit at the moment of return not have to wait 5-6 days to get comformation from amazon that they got your return and are crediting you card. I think with this item I would recommend best buy...

I would say the k3 is my favorite kindle & I have them all with my 1st being k2 & they are still in very good working order. I read off the one that works for me that particular day. I did have a dud of a PW and returned it but that does not mean I will not rebuy at a future date when the bugs are worked out, however k3 is still my fav, for me its friendly has easy to use buttons, the nice pearl screeen a refresh on each page and a mth battery...

It's upgraded a bit too.  New darker screen and faster page turns per the product listing compared to the old model.

i just returned the KPW & I do have the nook glow & initially I thought the KPW was better but the shadows at the bottom take away from the reading the text. Nook-g has the light at the top it doesn't get in the way of the text so IMO the nook does the better job. That said I really think both companies have tried too hard to fix something in e ink that didn't need fixing. A light...keep it simple the k4 & nook simple touch are both good readers leave it at that & just turn on a light. Also IMO 7" tablets is where reading is headed...just my 2 cents & I'm neither pro amazon or pro BN I'm pro reading e books...
