Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: PW3 preparing to ship
« on: June 30, 2015, 02:56:34 pm »
well took all 3 (pw3, pw2, Voyage) into my bedroom and I closed my blinds and I have room darkeners so its dark and all devices are very dark addition to this I hit a page on my book the the new page-ation (made that up) was shown, pw3 displayed it well the pw 2 and voyage broke the line up, this is good stuff...OH all were set to 12 brightness...

I did read for awhile and I do enjoy the new font and the software was working on the book I was reading and I can't say that for 'sure' it makes it easier to read as the book I'm reading is already good but it does make a cleaner page display...the page turning is snappy and I like the overall job it does. Back to my book for those who want to know about darkness of text yes it is a dark as the voyage , its a nice job by Amazon and just is a refinement of their commitment to the eink readers...

well its charging but of course I did some reading and comparing the new font bookerly to the default and yes its nice. I loaded 12 newer books and I usually always have newer mysteries and they were not set for the new software to display its special features and I was a bit disappointed because a couple of there were in the top 10 books and you would think they would get that extra was fine and universal throughout and yes I compared it to the Voyage same book same page same font and they were identical except for some small colorization basically because of different displays and overall not noticeable and yes both were set to 12 brightness. IMO there is no difference between the 2. I do like the bookerly font. Final vote is not in but I could see giving my PW2 to my daughter and keeping I will not put up photos of the views. IMO too many variables my camera, your monitor...I prefer to give you my impressions and yes I know that they are my views but I try to be a neutral as I can be to be honest this is a test. Yes I wanted it but it has to sell me for me to keep it and to let you know how picky I am I have returned computers for the minor issues that others would not. So I'm tough in my thoughts...I'll continue looking for a book that will let me test completely. My initial review would be that yes this is an improvement on PW2 but I would not replace my voyage at this point...just my 2 cents

there will be an update to the software for the voyage but I do believe before x-mas there will be a new voyage announced...I have a pw1 which I sold back to amazon and a pw2 but I like the build of the pw2 to the voyage. Its a bit too small , feels almost foreign. I like what features are in the new pw3 so I will try it. I always have 30 days to return it. No harm in trying and hey I don't do a who lot but play on devices and read so we'll see...

Which Incipio did you try, Larry? Can you link to it?

this is the one and I did try it and I got scared taking the voyage out as it was so locked into the cover I was afraid I would crack it (voyage), I got it out but it will never go back in. It's going back. The cover has magnets but they only hold the cover together. However when you put the voyage in the cover will not close for the magnets to hold...I may just not use a cover, I thought for a minute of the actual amazon 60 buck leather cover but I can't or won't spend that...I may get the oragami  plastic cover from bbuy  for 30 bucks and live with that....

I was really hoping M edge would come through but no I think they have money issues...this reminds me on my nexus 7 2nd generation and finding a cover...

I wrote amazon and gave them my thoughts on lack of cover options and I got a semi 'fill in the blanks' e mail response...I wrote M-edge but they replied with, no new kindle covers and I looked at the Oberon but its pricy and I couldn't actually see what the inside looked like nor could I find if it had a cut out for the back button. I may have to go with the orgami cover but it would be sliding sideways , for now I'm using a 3rd party kindle 4 cover with bands on the corner that just hold the voyage down, I left the right corner off to reach the button...hummm maybe I should stick with this but sad commentary when you buy a 200 buck reader and have to  rig another cover to work with it...just my 2 cents....

I just received a cover by incipio as I disliked the amazon orgami and I like this one even less than the amazon one, it looks cheap for 30 bucks and bulky looking , I'm sorta perplexed that they would design a great reader and the covers are like a second to think on this...

The page turns are slower on the PW2?

to me they are but its a small difference, you would have to try it to see...

I like the voyage too much and the rapid, almost instant page turns has sold me fwiw I just traded in my paperwhite 2 because I like the voyage that much. On covers I tried the orgami cover and I just did not care for it and actually waiting for a 3rd party vendor cover to be delivered today that is more like opening a book. I do not mind turning it on by a button I like being about to use both buttons or touch. However that said, its you that have to use it and my advise would be think about it a while and remember you have a full 30days to decide and if you decide the PW2 is for you , that is a actually a good thing as well. You have to like what you read on so take your time, all in all a good time to reflect on what you want on your reader...

A big Yay for all! Hey Larry, what made you change your mind?

the very sharp text and the clarity of the screen. Picked it up yesterday and no software issues or reboots, works fine and I'm delighted...also I would add that I usually always end up with all the new e ink devices...

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Is Anyone Getting the new Basic Kindle 5?
« on: October 25, 2014, 01:33:40 am »
The PW is better to read in a lighted room/outside than in the dark. Today, in a lighted room, I picked up the PW, then the V. It was so obvious on my V. that the V's text was so much darker. So, you don't realize the differnce until both devices are shown together. On the Basic 5, you know the difference. I would love to hear your reviews of the Basic 5, Basic 7, PW & the V.

I have chosen to go with the basic models, I like the k7, it has all the software updates and touch and works, my voyage went back. It just has too many bugs and IMO I just want to for lack of a better word keep it simple and I have had too many issues with it and not going through multiple returns to get it right. The k7 has nice dark text as well and I enjoy reading on it, that is what it is about not playing with lights. You loose yourself in the technology...just my 2 cents...

Well I decided that maybe my first Voyage had a bad touchscreen, and that's why it was not very responsive. So I went to a local Best Buy and bought another Voyage.  Unfortunately it did not make it past the Best Buy parking lot before I returned it.  As soon as I turned it on it had a hole in the middle of the screen that lit up like a flashlight.  I also noticed the bottom of the screen was brighter then the top part of the screen.  Giving up for now..

I agree mine had a couple spots that didn't recognize touch but the clincher was at 6PM yesterday when I went to read the light failed to come on. I did a hard reboot and that fixed it but that's like 3 reboots in 3 days, I promise myself before I bought this that I was not getting into a back and forth with Amazon with kindles and I just returned it to best buy. I'm sorta disappointed but it goes to a principal I have developed since I retired, keep it simple. These new devices are getting too many bells and whistles that IMO are really nice but I can't go through the aggravation as a tester till they get it right. I read on my basic k7 and was happy, all I want to do is read...

That's too funny!  Actually, I bond with mine as well but AFTER I get over the initial fickle stage and decide who is bondable and who isn't.  :)

your wiser than I, I have hardly ever seen technology I have not been interested in but after 2 days I usually keep it, the Voyage screen is fantastic, its the only word I can use for it and I have read about 300 pages so far and no eye fatigue and my eyes do get tired as I suffer from dry eyes and take drops. My wife would say to put the darn thing down (fill in device) and she would be right...

Larryb52, are you keeping your Basic 7th generation?  I know you got a Voyage but never saw any further mention.

Toby, you?  How about you liking your Voyage?

FearIndex, I don't remember if you're getting the Voyage too.

Just wondering what everyone's opinions are.

I'm definitely returning the Basic 7th generation, I much prefer the Basic 5.  I did get the Voyage.  Picked it up at Best Buy on Tuesday instead of waiting another month for it to come from Amazon.  It's VERY nice but going from a PW2, there isn't a huge amount of differences and I'm still trying to figure out if it is worth the $200.  The major differences I see is in the case and how to hold it to NOT turn the bezel into a launching pad! I guess this is what happens when someone gives me too many choices.  lol

yes I'm keeping it as well, I need a backup to my backup :) and I like it too much anyway, I sorta bond with my devices , it would be like sending a friend away ! , I am trading for credit my k3 a backup k5 and my PW2 , I have to because that's what I promised my wife and we have been married 38 years and I have kept my she fusses because I sorta keep all my devices around where I sit when on my laptop and watching TV ;)

I'm a computer guy and was asking too many technical questions about things and the 1st person sent me over to a more senior staff tech. I also fixed the problem I had trying to get the time in the chapter to cycle through the 4 options of time left in the book, location and page number. Mine would never change. It took a simple hard boot by pressing the button till it restarted, now it works. I got to talking about the auto light and she just gave me some some tips.

I'm glad that suggestion from the Amazon tech worked and it seems so far :) to work , hope it continues that way...

what Amazon told me was with auto brightness on and in your darkest room you set the level you want and than hit the large - at the bottom to set your preferred minimum brightness. To set your auto max setting you do the opposite you find the brightest place you will read and adjust it to the level you like and hit the + at the top to lock it...I tried this with the tech and it works or least for now it does :) ...btw if you get in an area that it in between it adjusts between those 2 levels...hope that made sense...
