I'd go through Amazon first, myself. Even if purchased at Best Buy. They're likely to give you much less trouble.

I changed my mind I'm keeping it , I got it going after 2 reboots last night, I'm still calling Amazon this morning...it seems good now but I have a few questions I would like to ask the kindle tech people about, for instance the bottom left where it shows the time left in the chapter, well it won't always change if you want to see say how much time till the book ends. It will if you advance the page. I'm sure there as usually as with any new device will be a software update. I like this reader way too much. I bought the ads off of it so its mine now...

well it looks like mine will have to go back to best buy, the light did not come on when the cover opened and I have the kindle cover...rebooted and still nothing. I forced it on but after closing and opening it , it stayed off...I"m going to shut it down for the night but I'm in no mood for exchanging kindles till we get it right. Also found a spot where it would not recoginize my touch, I'm disappointed...I'll decide in the morning...

well day 2 I am still satisfied and I have looked for bad lighting but no I don't have this and I had real problems with the pw1 so yes I can tell a bad screen when I see one. On that issue I returned 6 of them. I don't always get the haptic feel on the buttons but like Ann this is not going back because of that. Still impressed so far and like the speed of the page turns. Its still the best e reader I have seen. I understand WilliamG's issues and I do understand his feelings all I can say is I feel bad for him that he has had such bad luck...

there is a setting for that but mine is like yours and I think its suppose to be that way. I didn't expect actual button feel , but I get a gentle give when I press and I have the setting on high...

I would add that the buttons in the setting for the device can be set to make the feed back greater or lessor as well as the pressure you need to turn the page , Amazon really has thought of everything...

I just finished reading a couple chapters and this is what I e-mailed to my friend...

well I could of sent pictures but it would not do it justice, the text is very dark, they couldn't do better. Page turns are instant and no flicker at all. You can adjust the light or have it adjust for you. I went with the later and it did a great job. You can touch the screen or push the area that indicates the button and no just touching it does not turn the page, you have to push it , so no bad page turn and when you do push you don't get but one page turn so again no extra page turns. The glass is flush with the enclosure and it feels like paper to me. Its an excellent reader, This is better than the paperwhite 2 hands down , I don't know what they could of done to make it better. Its almost perfect

still playing with this but the Voyage is worth the price and fwiw I don't think its a bad price...

yes Rob I did it , works great...hope you like yours , outstanding reader but still setting things up...had to eat and write my friend who's working...

I just picked one up and going to set it up in a minute , they had the covers as well...

it came and I registered and loaded up the books I wanted and its as dark as the k5 (print) IMO, very nicely done. I got the case from amazon so it turns on and turns off the reader automatically. Still getting things together and I will report more later after a reading a bit but initial feel is a real nice product made well and the fonts are nice....so far so good...

I ordered it due to be here on the 2nd and I will advise at that time, I do have a k5 to compare it to it as well. I fully expect it to be the same...I also like that it has all the software extras that the PW2 has such as time left in chapter...

couple things that stick out for me problem wise is auto brightness. I have this on a couple tablets and usually turn it off as I like to choose my brightness I don' see where this is an option. I also see potential problems with the page turn on the bezel and mistaken page turns could result just by holding the device. I have a perfectly working basic and pw2 I may wait till I see more may just pass. I do like the basic touch may order it. I read more on my k4 and k5...just my 2 cents...

The last thing I want either on my device or in the Amazon store is moving covers all trying to get my attention like a bunch of carnival barkers, sorry!   :( ;D

This idea comes up periodically here, but never goes very far...

Edit to add--I've never quite understood the "more immersive" concept.  If I got any more immersed in my books, I'd drown! :). I think it must mean "more entertainment for people who don't enjoy reading as much as I do."  Just sayin'.

Betsy

totally agree....when is enough enough

Anything Else Amazon / Re: Amazon Announcement April 2
« on: April 08, 2014, 07:10:57 am »
its a TV service so its not about a kindle a topic needs to be created and moved there. I think amazon should get back to fixing the PW2 update that still has not been fixed. They keep coming up with new ways to take money off people but their follow up has been lacking...

can we move this to another topic other than about kindle? this has nothing to do with a e reader or have we gotten that far off topic and no I don't watch TV so this topic is meaningless to me...sorry

I agree . . .but would also say that if the child is NOT a big reader, giving her a kindle won't necessarily make her one. :)

Sent from my Kindle Fire HDX.

my wife says I'm just getting old should keep my mouth shut, sorry

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Kindle -a good Christmas present for a child?
« on: December 11, 2013, 09:39:40 am »
Iím contemplating buying a Kindle (basic model) for my ten-year-old daughter this Christmas. I have some concerns regarding the robustness (can it withstand being dropped or mishandled?) and parental controls.

Is it possible to set up an account on Amazon and restrict the downloads to age appropriate books only?

Any thoughts?

she's a kid buy her something children will play with not a reader, I like my kindle but goodness this is why kids are not kids anymore...

I think the difference in k5 and PW2 is because the fonts are difference, I did reconsider on the PW2 , the higher definition Fonts are more exacting and therefore do not look as dark (not as thick on the PW2) but they are very close to the same darkness as the k5 and I would like to give a tip of the hat to amazon CS they assisted in getting the pw2 working better, I'm glad I did not have to return it as I would only have wanted it back :)

I would second that as I returned my PW2 , it was ok but I compared it to the pw1 I have and the k5 , the k5 was the one I liked best so back it went also pw1 was darker and there was a refresh issue and FWIW there was one led light at the bottom right that bothered me...FWIW Amazon CS did offer me another but I promised myself not to put myself through devices after device, so I'm back at the k5 and that's that ...its just not for everyone...just my 2 cents...

Great choice, balaspa, in my opinion!

All the PW hoopla and discussion aside, I too am a fan of the original e-ink. It is that "magic" that brought me to Kindle and has kept me hooked all these years. I'm a bit weird in that I actually like the e-ink refresh flash too, kind of, because it reminds me of the special screen. :D (Well, I could live without that part if the refreshes were perfect otherwise. As it stands, I always turn every page refresh on.)

I think there is just something magical about electronic "ink" that just stays there without electric current powering tiny lights or something. The pure experience without added layers on top is still, in my view, the highest quality digital text experience you can get. How the text floats there, right on top of that digital page, not under layers of otherstuff or inside a screen.

Also, $69 Kindle 5 has way superior text blackness compared to any other Kindle model.

Much under-appreciated beast the baby Kindle.
