The Book Bazaar / Free Book Finds 2020
« on: January 01, 2020, 03:50:31 am »
Post free* book finds here.   No self-promotion please!

To search Amazon for free books, click here.

This thread is for members to post their Free book finds, no self-promotion please. Posts about an author's own books will be removed. Also, please don't post your friend's book as a "find."  You didn't just  "find it," did you? ;)

And please do not link through other sites:  use KBoards affiliate links (link-maker above) or generic Amazon links. :)

If you have a book of your own to promote, you may start a thread all your own in the Book Bazaar to promote your book, to post news and to talk to your fans!  Of course, you may also list the book in your Avatar and signature.  And you may list your temporarily free books in our Links to Free Books thread. Thanks!

Tip: typing in the title in addition to including the cover helps when doing searches!

We generally try to keep this thread on topic with book posts only, off-topic posts will be "pruned"!  This helps members who use the "new post" indicator or who have subscribed to the thread.  Thanks for your cooperation!

*buyer beware:  though books are free when posted here, prices on Amazon can change without warning so be sure to look before you click!
**international members:  these books are free in the US, but may not be free in your country.  Again, be sure to look before you click

Did we mention No Self Promotion?

If you have a book of your own to promote, you may start a thread all your own in the Book Bazaar to promote your book, to post news and to talk to your fans!  Please do not post here or ask someone to do so on your behalf.  You may post in the bargain book threads open to authors, found here:

**"Self-promotion" includes books that the poster has a vested self-interest in--books by friends and family or books that the member is posting on behalf of the author, to include paid or unpaid promotion

The Book Corner / Random free $5 from the Zon
« on: December 24, 2019, 11:36:18 am »
Just got an email that said, "go buy that book on your wish list, we'll give you $5 off". Sadly, the book referenced I'd already borrowed from the library and read, but I clicked through anyway and then went and did some clean up on my wish list. Turns out, there were a number of books the $5 could go against, so I got something else. Yay me. :)

The Book Corner / Library Extension for Firefox
« on: December 08, 2019, 10:31:29 am »
We'd previously had some discussion about a plug in for Chrome that would let you check to see if the book you were looking at was available via Overdrive/at your library. I don't remember what it was called, but, to my knowledge, they never developed it for other browsers. I know I'd gotten on a list for info when they did and never heard anything.

Well, I've just discovered one that works with Firefox -- it was referenced in a Washington Post article about ebook library lending. It's called Library Extension and you can find it if you go to add-ons in the settings area of Firefox. It works well. You can configure it so it will look in libraries where you have cards and you can click through if it shows as available so you can place a hold or, I presume, borrow it, directly.

It is a bit confusing as it will show something like "0 of 6 copies". Apparently it pulls that from the library site because when you click through it says that. BUT you can still place the hold and then it will actually show where you stand in the queue. It will show whether audiobook or ebbok is available (or both). One minus for me is that it doesn't include, that I've found, the Navy MWR eLibrary. But it does appear to be pretty much world wide as far as libraries listed.

It works for Amazon.com but also a bunch of international Amazon sites. And lists other book sellers as well that have on line presences.  And it's not just for ebooks -- you can set it to search the paper catalog as well.

The Book Corner / First Reads -- December 2019
« on: December 01, 2019, 05:34:29 am »
Amazon First Reads

Please note, commentary is my own personal opinion only. :)

We have:

Suspense: This looks pretty dark; doesn't appeal.

Contemporary Fiction: People with a Perfect Life, and then Bad Things happen. Ho hum.

Psychological Thriller: This is a possibility, but, again, might be a bit dark.

Crime Fiction: First in a new series by Lee Goldberg, who's generally reliable, and this looks promising. But I thought the same of the Patricia Cornwell one a couple of months ago and got burned.

Historical Fiction: NOT set in Europe in the 1940s! Instead, Alaska during the gold rush years at the turn of the 20th century. A possibility!

Family Drama: Torn between two lovers. Meh.

Children's Picture Book: No need for a kid's book for me. :)

Non-Fiction: A sports story: tragedy, underdogs, triumph.

So a couple possibles for me this month. I'll wait at least a few days and see how the reviews look.

Anyone here playing the game? I'm happy to add friends ... PM me and I'll send you my code. :)

I actually wasn't sure I'd enjoy it as I'd started Pokemon but just couldn't get into it. But it is kind of fun ... and forces me to go out more than perhaps my inherent laziness would allow! :D

We can also share tips and tricks, etc.

Anything Else Amazon / Special Prime price for Veterans
« on: November 07, 2019, 05:03:01 am »
If you are a US military veteran, or Active duty including National Guard and Reserve, you can get one year of Prime membership for $79. Which is a good savings off the regular yearly price of $119.

Prime for Veterans

If you are already a Prime member, the year will be added on to your existing membership.

You need to be able to provide your name and birthdate. If you're no longer active, you need to provide your discharge date.

You can 'attempt verification' 3 times. Once you've tried once, if it's not accepted, they provide a dedicated email address so you can work it out that way.

If you have to go the email route, don't bother getting too detailed in your first message as the first response is a message asking for the same information as on the web page. :) Ask me how I know? ;)

eta: the promotion is available from yesterday, November 6, through Veterans day, November 11. Probably only for US veterans. If you are on Amazon and click on the 'prime' link at the upper right, you should see a link as well to the promotion.

The Book Corner / First Reads -- November 2019
« on: November 01, 2019, 05:47:29 am »
Amazon First Reads

None of the covers or genres grab me.

We have:

Thriller   This is a maybe.

Contemporary Fiction    Not generally my thing.

Suspense    Blurb doesn't really appeal.

Historical Fiction  WWII again. And here I was pretty sure there was a LOT of history before the 1940s. ::)

Suspense    Seems like a darker "And then there were none". Maybe.

True Crime    Not a fan.

Children's Picture Book    No need for me. :)

Non-Fiction    Don't usually read much non-fiction; not sure if this topic appeals.

I guess I'll wait for some reviews.

The Book Corner / Amazon first reads -- September 2019
« on: September 01, 2019, 06:03:06 am »
https://www.amazon.com/kindle-dbs/firstreads

We get to choose 2 this month.

Thriller And by an author I've actually heard of.

Contemporary Fiction

Historical Fiction WWII Paris again.

Psychological Thriller

True Crime

Suspense

Fantasy

Children's

I think I'm going to grab the Cornwell -- I liked her Kay Scarpetta series for a while. Then it got like she was bored writing them and I got bored reading. But maybe she's more excited writing a new series, so I'm willing to give it a try.  Have to look more closely at the others to see what my number 2 pick will be. Leaning toward the Fantasy or the Suspense -- will wait for a few reviews to decide.
