Excellent!  Thanks, Ann.  I'll send it to my mom's Kindle at the same time when I do borrow it.  I did know about keeping wireless off to retain the book if you aren't done reading when the borrow is set to expire.

Be careful, though, if you have your kindles set to automatically sync. If you're both reading it at the same time you can easily get your relative places in the book mixed up. But I don't think you can turn of syncing for just the one book. BUT if you leave wireless off on one device it won't be a problem.

n interested in reading has ever been available at my library, I'm excited to start as soon as I finish the HR I'm reading now.  Thanks, Atunah!

Editing to ask library question.  Those of you who do lots of library borrows, can more than one person on your account read a library book at the same time?  Is manage your content going to let me download it to more than one device?

Yes .... you can put it on all your devices.

In fact. Further, if you're in danger of the loan expiring before you've finished it, you can turn off the wireless on the kindle and, though it will be officially returned to the library and no longer in 'manage your content', it'll stay on that device until you connect it again. I borrowed a John Grisham novel a couple months ago and told my brother, who has one kindle linked to my account, that it was borrowed. Pretty sure he's not returned it yet, though it's long gone from my account. He only turns wireless on if I tell him there's something there for him.

Completely logical!

Although none of it changes the fact that amyberta should have immediate access to her 2 selections, whether free as a Prime member or $1.99 as a non-Prime member.  The only way to not have access until February 01 is clicking that pre-order buy button.

Agree 100% :D

As a U.S. Prime member, I do remember that current First Read books are traditionally available for $1.99 to non-Prime members.

However, when I click through to one of the current offerings, The Likely Resolutions of Oliver Clock, my buy/one-click options are "Buy it now for FREE" (with the notation we get two free selections this month), or "Pre-order for $4.99" (with the notation it will be delivered on February 01, 2020).  That is looking at them from a signed-in Prime account on my laptop browser.

I have not "purchased" any of the selections this month, so maybe that second choice would change to a buy now for $1.99 if I bought my two free books first.  It does seem a little weird to me.

I think that when you're prime, your options are 'buy it now for free' or pre-order. Once you've bought for free, you'll only see pre-order on all the other first reads selections.

If you're NOT a prime member, you should see 'buy it now for $1.99' or pre-order. And, again, if you buy at the discount price all you're allowed to, the only option on the others will be pre-order.

In other words, you don't have the option of getting more than 1 or 2 for the special price. Most months it's 1. Some months it's 2.

BUT I'm just surmising now since I'm also a prime member.

February First Read books won't even be known until February 01.  The January choices are available for download now and should be immediately available (presuming you are a Prime member).

If you are NOT a Prime member and are pre-ordering the books for $4.99 each, they are not available until February 01.  Did you click the "pre-order" button instead of the "buy it now for FREE" button?

Even if you're not a Prime customer, you should still be able to buy them now for a reduced price.

They should be on your kindle as any other Amazon purchased book is.

You might not have your current/favorite kindle as the 'default'. If so it wouldn't show up there automatically. BUT it should be there if you go to the library and look at 'all' vs 'downloaded'.

OR go to the manage content and devices page at Amazon and find them and send them to the kindle where you want them. You can also reset your default kindle from that section. I find I have to reset mine periodically as it'll just glitch and default to whatever is alphabetically first. Or maybe most recently added. It doesn't seem particularly consistent. :) And sometimes it just un-defaults it and doesn't make anything else the default.

Actually, thank you all for reminding me to go and finally get that library card, so that I can keep my book spending under control this year  ;D

:D

Well .....  good luck with that. ::)  I have 6 checked out right now, who knows how many more on hold or on a wish list at the library, and I still end up buying stuff. Though I must also admit that a lot of times I see a book advertised, think, "oh, that looks good" and click through only to find out I bought it 2 or 4 or 8 years ago. :o

Actually, all I did was quote Anguabell.  My OverDrive library has several of her books, so I'm feeling pretty lucky right now.

Yes but your post quoting her reminded me to check again. :D

Thanks for posting to the page, Trophy -- because it reminded me to check libraries and it's now available in one of them. I've not borrowed it just yet, though, since I have 6 other books that had been on the waitlist and have come available in the last week or so! :o

I'd say: Historical adjacent. Definitely mysteries. Certainly an element of fantastical.

They usually end up available via the library, but I just checked and it's not yet in any of mine.

One has to wonder what the difference is. Is it the editing on her amazon imprint title, did they ask her to write some different way? Is there a cliffhanger and previous series don't have it? Just weird.

I think it's just a different style. Science Fiction vs Forensic murder mystery. And I had the impression that it's meant to be HUGE in scope, which requires a lot of exposition to start with. Which can be boring. And many reviewers mentioned that it just ended without much resolving anything. So sort of a cliffhanger but not one even very well done. I got it that month and tried to read it and, though it started off well, it quickly moved to incredibly dull with a sort of first person narrator who was totally annoying. Gave up at about 30%.

That is published by Thomas and Mercer, a amazon publishing company. Quantum is the book, right?

ah! O.K. then .... still an amazon imprint!

FWIW, the reviews on it were pretty bad ..... was a First read for September, officially released October, and even now with over 3700 ratings it's not even a full 3 stars! :o

Aren't they always all amazon imprints? Has there been a non apub book featured? I'll have to go back to the threads to see.

There was one by Patricia Cornwell a couple of months ago -- a 'big name' author. I actually got it because I'd heard of her and liked her previous work. This one was nothing like it and I couldn't even finish it.

I think you're right - or maybe Amz randomly selects.  Sounds more like random to me, because most seem less worthy of a read, and many of us on here think the same way.  Readers stating they don't see anything they like, month after month including myself.

I was hoping someone knows of a submission site, or whatever.  Even a freebie would get some follow thru ... as that's such a focused outlet.

Except a lot of people apparently choose them ... and in most cases the reviews are completely respectable. I just looked at the Dec selections and they all have at least 150 reviews (except the kids book) and are all rated at least 4 stars over all. So I feel like maybe those of us here are not typical.

It does seem the books are generally Amazon imprints. My guess is there's some sort of criteria the editorial board use to decide what books are in this program. It might even be something based on sales forecasts so that, in fact, they pick the ones they feel are most in need of an extra boost.

Which also might explain why there's never 'normal' romance, cozy mystery, etc.: those things all sell just fine without any extra push. :D

Identical choices this month in the UK.

Two freebies available this month, but I don't much like the look of any of them. Doom and gloom seems to be the overall theme this month. The main impression I came away with after reading the synopses was ... depressing.

Yeah. Kind of how I feel, too. I guess that's what's "in" currently, but I'm really over it.

Ah well, I have so much to read already that really it's probably better I don't get anything more ....... ::) :P ;D

Wow, we can pick two and there are actually two I want (at first glance, anyway) - the Contemporary Fiction and the Nonfiction.

It's a miracle!

Oh Good! I'm glad the selections appeal to someone anyway!

Amazon First Reads

Looks like we get to pick 2 this month.

Psychological Thriller:   Blurb doesn't grab me; I'm not in the mood for 'disturbing'.

Contemporary Fiction:   Looks like a "love at last" type romance.

Suspense:   She's 'tortured' and feeling 'trapped'. Can't we just have a cozy mystery?

Domestic Suspense:   This one looks promising -- 20 year old mystery now current again.

Nonfiction:   Meh. I don't read much nonfiction and this one doesn't appeal.

Thriller:   A spy novel. Maybe. I think this author has been featured before.

Historical Fiction:   NOT WWII. Rather, a post WWI suspense/romance, it looks like.

Children's Picture Book:

Once again nothing that leaps out and says "Pick Me!" though one or two possibles.

With the version I use, images are there. It might depend on the source but I don't see advertisements per se. But periodically there'll be a random "Advertisement here" sentence between paragraphs. And 'pull out' quote that some mags put as side bars do show up which means you read some of those things twice and it's not always easy to tell which version was in the flow of the article since, unlike the print or even on line version, there is no typeface change to indicate something like that.

That said, I'm not reading deep, important stuff, so it doesn't bother me too much. BUT, if that sort of thing is gone in this very moderately priced paid version, I might consider it.

274
It's the same thing as Send to Kindle but a third party developed it. For me, it works better. I had issues with Send to Kindle for Firefox because as the browser version increased, it no longer worked. I still use Send to Kindle with files on my computer, except PDFs which have to be sent via email or they won't convert.

275
I use the free version of push to kindle ... have never had a problem with articles not showing up complete, but I don't read too much from paywalled sites. I did see the notice of the beta of version 2.0. Haven't seen the need to bother with it as what I have works fine for me.
