Yeah ... it sounds like they were trying to do something and ended up someplace they didn't know anything about and just kept tapping things trying to escape! So, don't be too hard on 'em. :) 'Cause it sounds like they're basically good kids ... I mean, they WANT to READ! :o ;D Maybe just say, "if you see something on the screen you're not expecting, come get me."

They did.  I know how to add a PIN# for purchases, but it's rare for anyone but me or DH to use the Kindles and I'm not going to do it for a one-time-off.  The kids just won't have access to my back-up Kindle anymore unless they are using it beside me.

You want to talk to them, too, of course, and find out how they did what they did and what they thought they were doing. Benefit of the doubt: it's likely they weren't intending to do any harm but were just 'playing' with the thing and didn't realize they'd spent Real Money, or, if they did, were embarrassed to say so. :)

I can imagine, if it's a 'sponsored' kindle for example, that they could have seen the book on the front and it looked interesting, and then when they tapped it to find out more (or it could have happened accidentally when the screen went to sleep and they woke it up) that it said 'turn wifi on?' and, not knowing any better, they said 'yes' and then they were connected. And the 'buying' that happened was them not realizing that's what they were doing and they thought these were just other books they could look at or they were trying to get away from where they were. 'Cause, after all, Amazon makes it REALLY EASY to buy books with the thing! :o :) :D

But, yeah, if you're going to let them use it, you might want to turn on the parental controls!

I'd say talleylyn has it the nail on the head. Humidity in the environment AND your skin will affect how well any touch on the screen registers, even if the device is working perfectly.

Also, practice patience. :) I've noticed (with kindle, phone, and tablet) that if I tap and nothing happens, and I tap again, then it goes too far. So it's lilke the first tap registered, but the thing was just slow to respond. If this is the pattern you're seeing, definitely try a restart to wipe out any stray bits that might be using memory and slowing things down.

Got the gift, thanks.  Unfortunately I'd already opened my allotted 10 for the day before I saw yours. I'll claim it tomorrow. :)

Ann, I sent you a PM with my code.

I am having even more fun playing Wizards Unite than playing Pokémon Go.

I couldn't get into Pokemon at all ... but I have a fortress and a bunch of inns at the park near my house so I can take a walk any time the weather is good and play. Plus stuff seems to show up in my backyard fairly frequently, too. ;)

Anyone here playing the game? I'm happy to add friends ... PM me and I'll send you my code. :)

I actually wasn't sure I'd enjoy it as I'd started Pokemon but just couldn't get into it. But it is kind of fun ... and forces me to go out more than perhaps my inherent laziness would allow! :D

We can also share tips and tricks, etc.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Good Sale on Paperwhite

I forgot I had an alert running on camelcamelcamel, but it shot me a note early this morning with this:

$84.99 for the 8GB and $109.99 for the 32GB.  I may be out of touch, but I think those are pretty good prices.

Yep, definitely a good sale -- For the money, this is the best kindle currently sold, I'd say.  They're also running the trade in program as well so if you have an older device you don't want/use any more, you can trade it in and get another 25% off. That would bring the price down to around $64 which is a GREAT price for this device.

The current kindle is also on sale for $60: and the previous model Oasis for $150: . The current Oasis is still $250.

When's the last time you connected it to the world? If it's been a while I suspect it's simply that there's no data so it defaults to generic images.

Of course, I borrowed it right away last night -- and now the Andrea Penrose (Kensington Palace) I've had on hold for ever comes up as finally available.

When it rains, it pours. :D

I've had no issues, but don't generally borrow through my phone. I go to Overdrive on my main computer when I want to search for something to borrow, and usually put anything I find on hold. When my place int he queue comes up, I get a notice and click directly to my library to borrow for kindle.

Maybe you just need to restart the app or re-install it, or re-start your phone?

So let me just pile on then.  ;D

This has 3 books out so far. 4th coming in april I think. I am really enjoying these as the protagonist is not a lady or lord this and that, but a young woman cook. And she actually spends a lot of time doing her job too, its not just a wallpaper occupation.

Same author that writes the Captain Lacey series and of course the famed Mackenzies.

Well .... it appears to be available in 2 of my libraries and is available to borrow right away. :D

Yeah, I noticed the other day that the St Cyr book 10 was on offer here in the UK too, so I got it even though I've only just started reading book 1.  ???

It's all your fault. Yes you. All of you. You know who you are.

And proud of it! :D

The next round of voting is open .... still only a couple books I read, but there was at least one in this round that did NOT appear in the opening round -- which I am sure of because I read it and looked for it. :)

Anything Else Amazon / Re: Joining amazon streaming only???
« on: November 13, 2019, 11:01:31 am »
I think you can cancel your Prime subscription and then separately sign up for the music subscription. If you want to subscribe to Amazon Music Unlimited without having Prime, it's $10 a month. There is now a free music service with ads available, but I don't use that myself, so I don't know how much music is available or how frequent the ads are. As far as I know, if you don't have Prime, you can't listen to any ad free music.

Here's a link: (I found this, but did not read it fully, but it looks helpful.)

So ... music streaming is $10 a month, which would be $120 for a year.

Prime is $119 per year.

Yeah, I think that's right. Used to be you paid for prime to get free shipping and then they added a bunch of extras. Now, you basically pay for prime for the free streaming .... and the package delivery is extra. It's all in how you look at it, I guess. :)

Yeah, I'm not sure what, exactly they verify. It's not like they asked for a social security number. My membership would be up next January; I, too, am happy to not have to worry about it until 2021!

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: My last Kindle? #TeamVoyage
« on: November 12, 2019, 04:39:00 am »
My everyday kindle is the current PW which I consider nearly as perfect as the Voyage -- much prefer the power button placement on the voyage. I also use the Voyage still -- taking some classes this fall and put the books for them on it so I wouldn't need to go searching on the main device. And I have an Oasis that I use to read in bed -- nice because, with the buttons, I can keep my hands snuggled in the covers as well as the rest of me and my fingers don't get cold. :) As to the screens -- unless I hold 'em up side by side, I don't notice any difference in the reading experience. :)

Will I buy another kindle? Maybe. Depends what's on offer. I almost never read on my phone or tablet -- though there are a handful of things that work much better on the larger, color screen of the tablet. Mainly, it's hard for me to imagine what they'd add that I'd really really want to have. I will say this: it would be hard for me, at this point, to go back to paper books. I've had several things I've had to read lately that are only on paper and I definitely much prefer the kindle.

I also must confess that I deleted my Goodreads account. There seem to be way too much of watching and tracking our every step online these days - I know it cannot be avoided but at this point it feels somewhat overwhelming  :)

That's true ... but it seems to me GR isn't very good at it. :)  I frequently see books recommended to me because of some other book I've rated and the two are not even a little bit related! :o

Well, that was dead easy.

As you might have surmised, they were not able to verify my eligibility when I filled out the web page form. When asked, I sent the exact same information via email and within a minute received a response that I was now verified with a link to follow. Sure enough, it said I was good to go and all I had to do was click the 'continue' button and pay the $79 the usual way. Cool!

If you are a US military veteran, or Active duty including National Guard and Reserve, you can get one year of Prime membership for $79. Which is a good savings off the regular yearly price of $119.

Prime for Veterans

If you are already a Prime member, the year will be added on to your existing membership.

You need to be able to provide your name and birthdate. If you're no longer active, you need to provide your discharge date.

You can 'attempt verification' 3 times. Once you've tried once, if it's not accepted, they provide a dedicated email address so you can work it out that way.

If you have to go the email route, don't bother getting too detailed in your first message as the first response is a message asking for the same information as on the web page. :) Ask me how I know? ;)

eta: the promotion is available from yesterday, November 6, through Veterans day, November 11. Probably only for US veterans. If you are on Amazon and click on the 'prime' link at the upper right, you should see a link as well to the promotion.

Your Admin Team / Re: resigning as moderator
« on: November 06, 2019, 04:44:08 am »
To the membership:

I have resigned as a moderator here at KBoards. I won't be going away -- will certainly keep checking in to the boards that have discussions that interest me, but I found I had gotten to the point where I dreaded logging in each day. Would I, again, be faced with a long list of reports -- often the same 3 or 4 people all reporting each other about some thread in the WC, where none of them were behaving well but want the others disciplined. So I gave myself permission for it not to be my problem any more.

Part of the issue is time ... I'm retired now, so more busy than ever :) and the other moderators also have, in large part, been spending less time here for various reasons having to do with Real Life. So there's not even the same level of camaraderie as there used to be when we'd try to all get on line at about the same time to discuss what actions, if any, should be taken when some overly heated discussion flared up.

It is true that almost all of the contentiousness happened/happens in the WC. And, not being an author myself, I am not keen to make decisions unilaterally -- I don't have deep understanding of many of the issues, nor do I wish to. But without input from others, all I could really do was say to myself, "it seems like a bunch of you are acting like children," and lock the thread. AND -- I realized I was beginning to paint ALL the authors who frequented the WC with the same brush, which I realize is absolutely Not Fair. So, it's better for me to step away.

I did inform the ownership of my intention over a month ago but I've heard nothing from them except a brief PM: Thanks for your time here. I asked to have my name removed as moderator on the various boards where it's listed but that's not happened. Which, sadly, is not a surprise. And therein lies another reason for my resignation: the new ownership does not seem, to me, like it really cares much about how the board is run. Based on periodic threads in the "Forum Central" part of the board, they are fairly unresponsive to folks who've paid them money to advertise; it's not surprising that they also don't much care about the rest of the membership or the concerns of the volunteer staff.

I will continue to ban spammers and delete their posts when I see them, or if they're reported, as long as I still have the administrative permissions to do so. And I do intend to keep participating, especially in LTK and the Book Corner. And the remaining moderators know I'm happy to provide input if requested. But I'm done acting as playground monitor among adults who should know better.
