Tonight's a critical night to #stayinthefight.

But proud of these Nats either way.

Last home game of the season starting momentarily ....

Let's Go NATS

Go 1-0
Baby Shark
Bumpy roads lead to beautiful places.

Thanks very much, I thought that might be the case with the top of the line models.

Good tip on the warehouse deals, Iíve just found a certified refurbished Voyage which is very tempting, I always wanted one...

The Voyage has been my favorite model since it came out. I like it a bit better even than either Oasis model I've had. (Still have one). The newest Paperwhite is closest to it, but the placement of the on/off button on the Voyage is better.

Bought a refurb Voyage off of Woot last month and it's very nice. Looks brand new as far as i can tell. Got mine for $74, right now they have them for $99. They do also currently have 2016 Paperwhites for $59.

Forgot about them ... yes, that's a good source as well since Amazon owns Woot!

Sorry to hear this. :(

There's no telling about sales. The basic model kindle does seem to go on sale more often than the higher end ones, but I've seen the others on sale as well. The top of the line almost never is on sale unless there's a new model due out.

You might look at warehouse deals on Amazon -- can probably find a refurbished unit for much less money. In my experience, they're generally in 'like new' condition.

nothing for me on my phone or tablet. :(

I don't often open the kindle app on my phone or tablet ... but I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the alert!

Weird that it's not the same for everyone, though. ???

:o :o :o  An evenly matched, well-played, tie ballgame until the top of the 7th, then Holy Cow!

I would have lost big money had I bet my belief that the Nationals could not take both of the first two games IN Houston.  I'm looking forward to getting to sleep at a reasonable hour with no game tonight even though I will probably take a nap this afternoon.  :D

They've been doing that all season though* .... Still, I was half asleep at the bottom of the 6th so decided to 'change my seat' and went to bed. I did the same thing when they played the Wild Card game against Milwaukee and they came from behind and won. I did it also on one of the LA games where they were behind ... and I woke up and Howie Kendrick had hit a grand slam and they won the game. Once again, I woke up to good news this morning. ;D

*Arguably: it's what their season has a whole has been -- not great to start but coming on really strong at the end. And I saw a statistic that, over the course of the season, 41% of their runs have been scored when they already had 2 outs in an inning.

Go Baby Shark
Stay in the Fight
Go 1-0
Have fun
Dance in the dugout
Hug your starting pitcher

You're entitled. But I think I'll pretend I don't really care which team wins. I do respect some of the Nats but sometimes it is sure hard to support a rival of the Braves.   :)

I'd definitely support the Braves over the Yankees.  ;D  In fact I'd probably have to support any National League team over the American League, with a few exceptions.

Fun fact: The Nats and the Astros share a Spring Training facility in West Palm Beach. We expect to be there next February for the opening Spring Training game, which will be the two teams playing each other.

I wondered whether you would start a thread!  Should be a great World Series, I plan to watch every minute.

:( I expect I'll be staying up way too late all week. :)

#14 in the Captain Lacey series comes out December 17. I pre-ordered that one right away.  ;D

Really enjoy this series too. And a lot cheaper too than some of the others 8)

eta: And for those that don't know, Ashley Gardner is a pseudonym of Jennifer Ashley HR writer. Of the "Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie" fame.

Gee, it looks like I bought the first in that series back in 2011 and haven't started it yet. :o :o

So many books; so little time.

Crebel -- have you checked your libraries? 'Cause I've read most of them through overdrive. Though I gather for Linda that is not an option which is really too bad. :(

Yay Linda! :D

:( I'm really sorry about that --- because you're going to want to read all the rest, too. :D

Fine fine fine. I just checked it out at my library. I have another book to finish first. I'll try to forget the movie I watched. That was the main reason I haven't started the series. Cause they made a tv movie of the first and it was a bit boring. But its been a while and I don't really remember much of it. I only watched it because I liked the  main actor from the Inspector Lynley series. Which I also read. I just didn't like him in that role at all. Still life that is.

Reminds me, I need to read another Lynley soon too.

I saw that movie, too, and wasn't impressed. Read. The. Books. ;D 'Cause it's the characters that make the book and the movie didn't do a good job with portraying them, I thought. Plus, like actual humans, they change and grow (and sometimes regress) as the series goes on. Gamache is not the same guy in book 15 that he was in book 1 -- his experiences have shaped him. Same is true, even more so, for some of the other characters.

O.K. So, I just finished her latest, A Better Man, so it's time for me to once again gush over Louise Penny.  Read the series from the start, of course (Still Life) and if you don't love it, then I'm sorry for you. :( :)

I read the first one back in 2009 and have continued with the series faithfully. It's one of the few that I will pay full price for when a new one is due out. I'm sure they're all available via Overdrive for those more frugal; current price on most of them is $9.99 which I realize is a bit high for some. But they are all so totally worth it. I buy these books and then hold them and save them for when I need a book I know I will like. And, I kid you not, I started reading this one a couple of days ago and could just feel myself relaxing. The mysteries are well crafted, the characters are superbly drawn, and the writing is just wonderful. I've rated every book in the series at least 4 stars, and many of them 5 stars -- which is rare for me.

I meant your Amazon library, sorry I wasn't more specific!  Alas, my public library rarely has any of the books I want to read available for Kindle.

According to Amazon, I already own books 1, 2, and 4 in this series and no others.  I'm sure that means each of those have been on sale at some point.  I'd hoped to fill in the gap with book 3 before starting the series (because I'm sure I'll love it per my rarely wrong KB-enabler-peeps!), but may need to go ahead and start reading.  It won't hurt so much to pay full price for Book 3 if I've gotten the others on sale first!

No, I understood. I was just also pointing out that they're not carried in my local public libraries in kindle format. :)

One could write entire dissertations on this topic addressing characters in  Wuthering Heights.

And if you've read Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea you'll never think of Jane Eyere the same way again.

Good point! I definitely had the first one; had read it. Hadn't gotten to the second because the price was too high and it was not in Overdrive. At least, not at any of my libraries. But my GR review indicated I'd enjoyed the first, so I jumped on this sale price. :)

The second of the Lady Darby mysteries is 'on sale' for $1.99.

The first one is $2.99 --- I think that's the 'regular' price.

Price is good if you want a basic tablet.

According to kboards FAQ, the most current o/s (aka update? aka firmware?) for my Fire-10 should be 6.2.2. However, when I check Settings + Device + System Updates, the o/s version indicates:
"Your device is running Fire OS (636559820)
Installed September 12, 2019, 10:58 PM"

I clicked on the "Check Now" widget and got the reply of "No updates found".

I'm baffled.

Do I have the proper firmware and/or OS or update? Am I confused about Fire vs Kindle?  Can my Fire-10 be updated or is it stuck at a previous release? Is the FAQ out-of-date?

That post is from 2012 and might refer to a completely separate branch of the Fire tree. I wouldn't trust it.

If you've checked for an update and it says you're already up to date, I wouldn't worry. But you can find Kindle and Fire updates on Amazon -- and info there is more reliable than a 7 year old thread here. :)

The Sinister Mystery of the Mesmerizing Girl - the Athena Club Book 3 by Theodora Goss is out as of yesterday. I am just re-reading the book No. 2 to get reacquainted with all those characters   :)

Thank you! I read the first two and really enjoyed 'em. Will have to see if this is in my library.

edit: and it is! (one of them, at least) I have it on hold.

Thanks for posting, Atunah .... it completely slipped my mind. :)

So, Broken Glass, the mystery, has a few reviews who think it's just fine and a few more who thought the language was horrible, so the current overall rating average is really pretty low. For me, the blurb doesn't really appeal.

A Transcontinental Affair seems less historical and more romance -- which I know for many of you is a plus. Not so much for me, I'm afraid. But the reviews are OK except for the one complaining it's "homosexual". Well, I got that from the blurb. But at least one other reviewer mentioned some historical inaccuracies and a contrived ending.

The Science Fiction one, The Last Dance, actually sounds more like a mystery that just happens to be set in space. In fact the series is called 'Near Earth Mysteries'. I think I'm going to try that one.
