The latest and 4th in the Lady Sherlock series by Sherry Thomas will be out on the 15th of this month. I love this series.

Thanks for the heads up! :D

I read these books forever ago!  I didn't know they had made into a TV movie series.  Oh my goodness, you have made my day.  I will have to re-read a few of those and then go watch the movie series.  How do you feel it compared to the books?

I'd never read the books, but the tv movies are fairly enjoyable. Light and fluffy. They're on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries channel and star Candace Cameron-Bure.

Well bummer. Guess I need to buy a new case now too.

I thought I saw somewhere that someone adapted the case -- moved the magnets somehow. So that might be an option if you don't mind potentially destroying the one you've got.

I do love that series and I thank Atunah for the recommendation here.  I save them for special occasions so I don't go through them too quickly.

I second this. :)

I've been taking my time but the latest came up in my library queue a couple weeks ago, so ..... now I'm caught up and impatiently tapping my fingers waiting for April.

Let's not get into any pepsi vs coke or apple vs microsoft arguments about where and how to put spaces and blank lines. These things are anathema to some and others don't care. AND beside the point here which is simply: how did Amazon get the estimated page count it did. With the corollary of: what might affect it? Let's discuss without judgement as to the rightness or wrongness of layout choices.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Kindle worth it???
« on: September 20, 2019, 02:10:30 pm »
When I first saw the kindle advertised in November of 2007, I knew I wanted one. I read a lot. Like, really a lot. Have done since I learned to at age 6 or so. I'd generally always have a book with me. When traveling, I'd take at least 2 or 3 along and often ended up buying some while away as I'd finished the ones I'd brought.

Some paper books suffer from too-thin paper, so the print bleeds through one side to the other. Or the typeface is tiny so as to have fewer pages. Hardback books tended to be quite heavy, but paper back ones are often cheaply put together and sometimes difficult to read near the bound edge.

I LOVED the idea of one device on which I could have as many books as I might need or want at any time. AND, I can make the print as large as I need it to be, on a screen that's comfortable to read in all lights. When I finally purchased one in June of 2008, I'd done my research. At the time, there was a model by Sony. The screen and features were probably as good but the thing that stood out with the kindle was that it did not require me to plug the thing into a computer.

Since then, I've had a number of models, generally upgrading every 2 or 3 years depending on the features offered on newer models. I do currently have several devices. The one I read on most often is the current Paperwhite model. I also have a Voyage which is probably 4 years old now -- still an excellent device. And I have an Oasis, immediately previous version, that lives by my bedside.

The price of books is not a factor for me -- some feel ebooks should be cheaper because they don't have to be printed. I don't see it. I buy a book for the content. Another argument is that some ebook advantages may actually make them MORE valuable for some people, so maybe they should cost more. For me, if I want to read a book, I decide if I want to buy it, or borrow it from a library. In fact, borrowing from the library is much easier with the kindle because you don't actually have to go to the library. There's also an instant gratification factor when I do want to buy one. ;)

Only one other thing I would say: unless you have read ebooks on an eInk device, I would suggest that you don't really know that you 'prefer physical books'. :) The experience is, for me, as as good as reading on paper, better in some ways, and not at all the same thing as reading on a phone, tablet, or computer screen.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Lock Screen Ads

You may be right that the delay is because of not having the right sales tax amount. When you see the charge hit, if it still hasn't updated, that would be the time to contact them for sure.

424
I just re-read the section I have bolded.  How many devices did you send to besides your PC?  I seem to remember that many textbooks are limited to being downloaded to one device at a time.  If that's true for this one, you need to figure out which device it did download to, delete it from that one, and resend it to only your PC.  Just a thought ...

Excellent point -- that sounds familiar to me as well, though, as noted, I've never rented any books.

And Atunah's point is well made, too -- I love the idea of a 'ghost copy'. It's even there if you return the book, in your archive/kindle account, but you can't access it unless you buy it or borrow it again. Though it does sound like you did re-rent it -- so you should have access.

425
Not sure exactly what you're asking but it is certainly the case that a certain amount of the memory will be taken up by the operating system and file storage index.

As far as I know, the only way to reliably free up storage -- which could be crammed with left over junk -- is to reset the device to factory conditions. All books will go away, along with any personalized settings, memory of wifi networks, etc. Just moving the files doesn't necessarily work. It only means the kindle might not be able to find the books, but the space is still marked as used.
