He already said he "re-rented" the textbook and the expired tag disappears but still won't open.

Having never rented a book, I don't have any advice other than to call Customer Service. Sorry.

Ah! missed that. sorry. I'm at a loss, then. :(

Is it available on another kindle or Fire device? Or another tablet with the kindle app? It may just not be compatible with Kindle for PC for some reason -- though I can't imagine why not.

If you're happy with the HDX you have, I expect you'll be happy with the larger screen. Though you should be aware that you're giving up some resolution and speed.

The HDX is "2.5 Ghz Quad-core" while the HD10 is "Quad-Core up to 1.8 GHz". Not sure what 'up to' means in this context.

Resolution on the HDX is 2560x1600 resolution at 339 ppi; on the HD10 it's 1920 x 1200 (224 ppi).

I've never done a rental, but my understanding is that you paid an amount -- smaller than the purchase cost -- and would have access to the title for a fixed period of time. After that, you don't any more, unless you pay to rent it for a further period of time. If you initially rented it a couple years ago, chances are you need to pay again to have access to it again.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Lock Screen Ads
« on: September 18, 2019, 04:10:21 am »
So, I have a kindle WITH special offers and also one without.

On the one with offers, there's a setting in 'your account'. But it doesn't let you buy out from the device. One setting lets you hide offers with 'images or situations that may not be suitable for all audiences'. Another is to toggle on or off whether you want the ads to be based on items you've browsed or purchased. If that's off I assume you get random stuff. I have it on and mostly only see books and every now and then there is one that I click through to check out further. I don't think I've ever actually purchased from the device, though.

I thought there was a place where you could see all the offers at once -- but I'm not finding it now.

On the kindle without special offers, there's no where I can find to ask that it be turned on via the device. The 'your account' settings page looks the same except the special offers option isn't there at all.

It should be fairly automatic, but you do need to be able to connect via wifi or 3G. And sometimes it can take a little while though, I agree, it shouldn't really. :-\ Definitely try a sync as Kimberly suggests.

Also, look at the devices section of content and devices. For the one you're talking about, make sure it indicates that there should be NO special offers -- i.e. you are unsubscribed. I assume you got a confirmation of the payment. If that all looks good, I'd give it a few hours and if it's still not right, contact Kindle customer service to find out what's up.

I had a DX that got passed to my brother and he gave it back to me when it wouldn't talk to the world any more. :( He really liked the larger format, but it didn't do him much good since it was registered to my account, so it became basically impossible for me to send him books. He took one of my smaller spare kindles instead. :)

I have, a few times, signed up for a freebie by an author, which means I get put on their mailing list as a requirement for me getting the free book. Only did it a few times and have basically decided that's not the way I want to find new authors.

MY experience -- which may of course be different to that of others -- was that the books I got weren't that good and I wasn't interested in reading any more by those authors. So, I unsubscribed almost immediately from whatever mailing lists I'd gotten on because of it. I knew full well I was signing up for a mailing list -- which is why I used one of my 'junk mail' addresses but I considered that if the book was really good, hey, I'd have the inside scoop on new stuff from the author.

At this point I've got so much to read I don't need to go searching. If I come across something and it's free or really cheap on Amazon, I might try it. If I have to download it from a website and get on a mailing list, I give it a miss. Might I lose out on something fantastic? Maybe. But if it's REALLY that great, I'll hear about it again -- from someone other than the publisher or author him(her)self. :)

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Sept 16 -- Prime Exclusive Kindle Sale
« on: September 17, 2019, 06:06:03 am »
I just saw this ... any thoughts, from past experience, whether there might be a cheaper price for the Paperwhite around Black "Friday" and the holidays? I'm thinking of getting one for husband who has never had a Kindle in his whole life.

My guess is this is likely as low as they'll go. I suspect this sale will last a week or two and then prices will go back to normal. Then they will likely have a sale again around Thanksgiving, but I wouldn't expect the price to be any less than it is now.

The previous model Oasis is a really good price compared to the full price of the current model -- it's a fine device and really the only difference is it doesn't have the 'warm light' feature. If you want an Oasis for the buttons or other features, I'd jump on that because who knows how many of them they have, really, since they're not made any more.

Hmmm. I don't generally do the transfer by USB thing but I took a look.

When you click boxes, the only option along the top is 'deliver'. If you click that it asks what device to send it to.

If, instead, you click the box with the 3 dots ("actions") then it will let you download and transfer via USB.

You can check the box on multiple titles and then click the actions button of one of the titles you've checked -- I do not know if that will then apply that action to all that you have checked. I rather think not, but might be worth a try. At worst you've transferred only the one.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Is this the end of an era?
« on: September 14, 2019, 06:49:55 am »
My take: when Kindle was new, people wanted to know about it so they searched out places they could learn. And people who were fans looked for other fans. Now, they're pretty ubiquitous, and the improvements in each new version are much more subtle than early in its history, so there's not the same need/desire to talk about the cool gadget. :) Most people already know about them -- or think they do -- so are less inclined to seek out a forum unless they have a specific question. They join, ask the question, get an answer (or not), and then go away. I know I've done the same things on other fora related to my car or whatever.

FWIW, though we do frequently get new members joining to ask questions about author-related things, we get very few new members interested in kindles as READERS. Part of that could be that it's not called "Kindleboards" any more, so I'm not sure how easy it is to find if you're googling a question about a kindle as a device. Part is also certainly that there are other places for readers to go to get book recommendations -- GoodReads, to give an obvious example, as well as groups on FaceBook, and no doubt other places, too.

I suspect MobileReads is still fairly popular because those who are likely to tinker with software are also more likely to look for a place to discuss tinkering with software. And that's always been a sort of niche for that site -- early on there was some discussion here, but if it got too into the nitty-gritty, we'd suggest people ask over there.

But I also think most kindle owners just want to read books and don't care about that. :) Using the device is easy enough that there's not a lot of questions to ask about how to work it. So even new owners are most likely to go looking for where to get books and head to the dedicated reader fora.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: mailing in kindle for trade in,.... questions
« on: September 11, 2019, 03:47:59 am »
thanks. you mean like buy a nice box at the ups store or something? did you put anything in the box to absorb shock like packing peanuts? wrap kindle in plastic? ziplock bag? idk

Or if you have a left over box of an appropriate size from having had something else delivered. Certainly make sure it's not just rattling around loose, but, again, I wouldn't buy anything to stuff it. If you don't have packing stuff left from other deliveries, use crumpled scrap paper or air popped popcorn. Putting the kindle in a sealed bag inside the box would not be a bad idea.

You could probably get away with sending it in a padded envelope even, but, in that case, I'd definitely put a piece of cardboard over the screen and wrap it with plastic wrap inside the envelope.

The better you pack it, the better chance it will arrive in the same condition as you sent it, so you'll get your maximum trade in value.

Oh, and be sure it's fully charged and then do a factory reset before you package it. And be sure it's un-registered from your Amazon account.

Welcome to KBoards, Or Welcome Back ;) OR Hi, glad you're still here. :D Congratulations on the book!  :)

Much of what follows you should already be aware of, as it was included in the information you agreed to when you signed up. So please consider this to be just a friendly reminder. :) (The posting of this 'welcome letter' doesn't mean you've done anything wrong; we just want you to have a ready reference, so we post this note in every thread in the Bazaar. :) )

KBoards is a fan forum for Readers, Writers and Kindle Lovers. Authors are always welcome to post anywhere but, as you browse the 'boards, please keep in mind that self-promotion, of any sort, is ONLY allowed here in the Book Bazaar.

A brief recap of our rules follows:

--Please bookmark this thread (using your browser's bookmark/favorite function or the Kboards bookmark tool available on each thread) so you can update it as we ask that authors have only one thread per book or group of books and add to it when there is more information.  You may start a separate thread for each book (or you may have one thread per series of books, or one thread for all of your books, it's your choice).

--We invite you to use your book cover as your avatar and have links to your book and website in your signature. Instructions are posted here

--While you may respond to member posts to your thread at any time, you may only bump your thread (back-to-back posts by you) once every seven days.  Once you've responded to a member, that resets the clock to zero and you must wait seven days to post, unless another member posts before then.

--We ask that Amazon reviews not be repeated here as they are easy to find at your book link.  Also, full reviews from other sites should not be posted here, but you may post a short blurb and a link to the full review instead.

--Although self-promotion is limited to the Book Bazaar, our most successful authors have found the best way to promote their books is to be as active throughout KBoards as time allows.  This is your target audience--book lovers with Kindles!  Please note that putting link information in the body of your posts outside the Book Bazaar constitutes self promotion; please leave your links for your profile signature that will automatically appear on each post.  For information on more ways to promote here on KBoards, be sure to check out this thread:
Authors: KBoards Tips & FAQ.

All this, and more, is included in our Forum Decorum.  Be sure to check it from time to time for the current guidelines and rules.

You may also wish to review the Terms of Use, Copyright Policy, and Privacy Policy.

Thanks for being part of KBoards!  Feel free to send us a PM if you have any questions.
