ALERT:

I posted to this thread last night, but I wasn't on topic. :) I've moved that and a couple of responses to the old, now resurrected, Cozy mysteries thread. :)

Here they are: https://www.kboards.com/index.php/topic,82207.msg3834997.html#msg3834997

Looks good, but not available on Kindle here in the UK. Given the size of my TBR list, I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing!  :D

And -- I realized now that I put it in the "historical' mystery thread .... it's NOT an historical. Do we have a thread for cozies?

eta: looks like we do, though it's long dormant. I woke it up and moved these posts. :D

The Book Corner / Cozy Mystery series
« on: August 22, 2019, 06:27:30 pm »
Found another series -- probably heard about it here but only started it this past week. Here's the first book:

Essentially a cozy, but with a unique twist, and including some romantic and 'adventure' elements. Good characters, fun setting.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Organize my kindle library
« on: August 18, 2019, 03:54:00 pm »
I am lamenting the loss of FictFact. I did try importing from Amazon to Goodreads, but most of my books are library books and they did not get imported. That would be quite a chore to do manually, and it still won't track series. I may have to follow Ann's lead and create a huge spreadsheet.

If you have the fictfsct file, which is basic comma delimited, it's  otterrivly difficult to clean it up if you have some experience with Excel ... or any other full fledged spreadsheet application.  From there it's just a matter of keeping up.

The real problem with that data is that it only included series I'd read any of and not ones I'd marked as following but hadn't started yet.

I just finished #6 in the Penny Green series ... all are available via KU/KOLL. #7 is recently released. I've been enjoying them very much. There's a couple long story arcs besides the main plot of each book -- one involving her possible romance with the Scotland Yard inspector and another involving the search for her father in Columbia.

Here's the first one:

I went to Catholic school in the 60s. No one every chastised me about what I was reading -- which was pretty much anything I could get my hands on. I guess they knew my parents had a handle on things so they didn't need to second guess their parenting choices. Or maybe they knew if they had my mother would have very politely told them to mind their own business. :D

As to paper: I read a paper book just last week. It was on the shelf in the condo we're staying at. First in a series set in the place we're staying. I liked it. They have #2 and #3 here as well, so I'll try to read them before we leave. It did make me really appreciate the kindle, though -- it was harder to hold and the font was a bit 'thinner' than I'd prefer. Wouldn't have finished it if it hadn't been pretty good.

Late to the thread but I think all the advice here is sound. FYI, You can do a restart by holding the power button, or by going through the menu: meu/settings/menu/restart.

I'm currently away from my normal stomping grounds and internet is very iffy. Even the wifi we have is pretty weak and my battery was draining much more than usual. So, contrary to my usual practice, I've been keeping the kindles in airplane mode until I'm ready to download something or sync 'em. That's certainly helped, though I've also been reading way more than usual, so it probably balances out. ::) ;) :D

Happy to have enabled you, ladies. :D

Yes, I've been reading them as KOLL books, though I think at least one was a Prime Reading option for a time. They might go in and out, so keep checking. :)

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Voyage
« on: August 14, 2019, 04:37:27 am »
Yes, but ....

The latest PW has a lot of the 'look and feel'. Mainly the flush bezel, which I very much like. I doesn't have the haptic buttons, however,  nor the very good placement of power button. But it's a bit thinner and lighter. The lighting is as good or better, though the auto brightness feature is gone. It's also water resistant.

You may find a Voyage via Amazon's warehouse deals, which tends to have discontinued or refurbished units.

fictfact.com used to be good for tracking series. But it's gone now. At this point I have a massive spreadsheet.

Beyond that, I just use the collections feature on Kindle.

For books not in series, all that really matters to me is if I've read it or not, though I do have some collections for specific non-fiction that has books I want to get at with some regularity, but not on a daily basis. Having them in a collection just makes it easier.

Note that you can move books among collections by manipulating the kindle but also by going to your content and devices page on Amazon. That's probably going to be easier if you've got a lot to move around. Note, also, that a book can be in more than one collection.

I also use Goodreads: when I've finished a book, I rate it and write a short review, mostly just to help me remember it. So anything I've read in the last 3 years or so is logged there.

He/She makes one post and doesn't answer any questions. A concerned person that hasn't done anything wrong would stay to see the feedback.

Considering the first post was between 2 and 3 in the morning EDT, I wouldn't expect them back to look at any commentary before tomorrow in the very early morning.

There should be something under settings, but I no longer have a Fire so can't remember exactly. On a generic android I believe it's under 'display'.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: turn the page buttons
« on: August 07, 2019, 09:09:49 am »
I would be even happier if they'd continued to produce the Voyage - but that's a whole other discussion .....  ;)

I do have a couple Voyages -- one is my husband's and the other I use semi regularly. I switch between using the 'haptic buttons' and just touching the page for page turnings. What I REALLY like about that one is the placement of the power button in the upper back. It's easily reachable, but very unlikely to be triggered by accident. The placement at the bottom of the current PW -- which otherwise is very like the Voyage (minus a few bells and whistles) -- is less than ideal, in my opinion.

Edited my post for spelling - and your quote of my post.  :) Linda

I'm with you guys....I'd love to be able to get some of my wish list books free.....or even on sale!  I do sometimes find the free books to be good and worth reading, but it's kind of a crap shoot.

Exactly. We're like the rats that only get cheese every 10th press of the bar .... we keep pressing every month to see if there's cheese -- and then report, sadly, that there's not. But we're willing to try again next month,'cause one of these times there Will Be CHEESE! ;D
