Wouldn't linking to a computer via USB set the time on the Kindle?  I imagine you've already tried that.

You'd think so, but there was some discussion on some forum or other about a guy who traveled to China or some such place a lot and if he had to reset his Kindle while over there it lost the correct time and there was no way to fix it until he was back in the states.

I didn't know manybooks would let us download via Whispernet.  I did the computer/usb route with it.

On the Kindle use the browser to go to www.mnybks.net and you'll be able to download their guide which you can then use from the Kindle just like the feedbooks guide.

I think I've narrowed it down to Hokusai wave or Celtic Hounds.  But will probably wait a bit to order.  Went to a(nother) craft fair yesterday and bought a gorgeous jacket that is more than my usual monthly clothing budget.  (Which is where Kindle accessories fall. . .)  Anyway, the vendor was nice enough to bill in 4 installments -- my friend and I have bought stuff from her before, she totally know us -- so it might be the first of the year before I can justify an Oberon.  I didn't buy any of the very cool handbags I saw, or any of the jewelry, so I think all in all I controlled myself.  Plus, tax season will begin in January and then I'll have an actual regular paycheck for a few months. . . .not part of our budget  ;)

Dec 6 is the feast of St. Nicholas and since he's the original Santa Claus it's a perfect day to open a present.

I've been working at it since about 8:45.  Finally got logged in.  Then got to put in my details and type the funny words.

Loading. . . . . . Loading. . . . . . Loading. . . . . . Loading. . . . . .
Pretty soon I'll have to just move to my other computer and start over. . .gotta go where there's heat!  I'm supposed to get one for hubby too. . ..

Cat, I think Mari gave you the answer.  To my knowledge the only way to get the time right is to be able to connect to Whispernet.  Until then you probably won't be able to reliably sort by 'most recent'. . . .but it never hurts to ask. . ..

Darn it all!  That's exactly what I'm going through, Ann (minus the extra paycheck).  I'm waiting till Christmas to get mine with Christmas money.  Really.  Ooooh, which design should I get?
I have promised myself that if I make a decision, which I expect I will after a few more stare down sessions at the web site, that I will order it and give it to my husband to wrap up for me for Christmas.  Or I might send him a link and tell him to just order it for me himself.

I think now I'll go to bed and sleep on it a while.

One of the choices in the poll ought to be "I can't decide".

Anne.. just get both :) or one of each

Yeah, no, that's not going to happen: it wasn't that big of an extra paycheck.  But I have time to cogitate as I won't order until they've 'cornered' the market, so to speak. . . . .<holding for groans>. . . . .

I love my ave of trees.. its a wrap around design.. stunning!

I think tree of life is the wrap around (on brown).  The avenue of trees (on green) reminds me of the main driveway at my college.  But I also like the wave because I love warm places like beaches.  And I like the Celtic hounds because, well I used to be an O'Connor. . . decisions, decisions. . .

See, I was totally resisting all y'all's temptations.  $75 too much to spend, not keen on velcro, M-edge I have is perfectly good.  I didn't even check out their website. . . but, but, but, now there's no velcro. . . . and I got an unexpected paycheck today (well, not unexpected but sort of extra, out of cycle) so I figured. . .it doesn't hurt to look, does it.  I guess it depends on what you mean by 'hurt'.   :-\

Drat and Blast. . . . .now I just have to decide which one. . . .I like Celtic Hounds, Hokusai wave and Avenue of Trees.

Tips, Tricks, and Troubleshooting (Kindle) / Re: Sampling Books
« on: November 21, 2008, 06:20:44 pm »
Can you delete samples from the content manager or are they there forever just like books?
They're deletable.  In fact, when you buy the full book, you'll have it AND the sample.  So what you want to do is note the last location number in the sample so you know where to pick up in the full book.  Then you can delete the sample.

Darn you. . . . .you're just bound and determined to get me to buy one of these aren't you? ? ?  The corners vice velcro may FORCE me to reconsider the $75 price tag.

AAAAAARRRRRGH

Ann:  Given that it doesn't air until Sunday (the 23rd), there is no way you will get it by the 22nd.  Sorry. :(

My bad. . . I mean before the end of T'giving weekend. . . . .

Ann

Just let us know the next time you are ordering something Jim, and we'll cheer you on!   ;)

Does that work for me too?  I just ordered "A Colbert Christmas" for my son for his un-Christmas present. (He's Nicholas and we always give him something on the feast of St. Nicholas.)  Although it's not even released until the 25th of November, I'm REALLY hoping it arrives before the end of the weekend so I can just give it to him while he's home and won't have to mail it up to him.

It took Vamp 1 hour and 9 minutes from receipt to telling us about it.

Vamp, if it did say 'out for delivery', I'm pretty sure they have to deliver today.  Have you checked to make sure it doesn't say 'delivered'.  And searched your porch?  I really do feel for you. . . . .

I'm right handed, and I usually hold my Kindle in my left hand.  Usually because I am doing something else, like brushing my teeth, with my dominant right hand. :)

??? You read while brushing your teeth?  You're really talented!!

Suggestions, Comments / Re: Kindle Boards from a Mobile Device
« on: November 21, 2008, 01:00:37 pm »
I think the OP was talking about using a smart phone with internet capabilities to monitor Kindleboards.  The Kindle browser is not robust enough for the board to work because of the graphics. . . .unless -- and I don't know about this -- Harvey has set up a dedicated mobile version of the site. . .Harvey?

NowNow is now WasWas. . . or maybe GoneGone

I never used it anyway. . .guess I never will. . . . .oh well!

But, as someone else observed:  perhaps we'll soon get a software upgrade removing the NowNow option and adding a 'content organization system', aka FOLDERS

I guess you didn't get MY joke.  I couldn't understand you because I never caught the Babelfish. ;)

D'oh!

Where's my towel. . . . . .?

63574
Sorry, I didn't understand that.

I guess it was a feeble attempt. . .your original quote said

We bever managed to catch the Babelfish.

Sorry.  Too obtuse I guess.  Goes back to that thread a few weeks ago about how my eye ALWAYS goes to the misspelt word.  Implication was it wasn't quite English because your Babelfish wasn't working. . . . .

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Kindle for Teens?
« on: November 20, 2008, 06:21:33 pm »
very well put Ann... when my mom let me "graduate" from young adult/teen books to grown up books, she had the ultimate say in which books I read, but she was always there to answer questions. That is the same way I handled books and movies with my kids and now I see my kids doing the same with theirs.
Yeah. . .I don't remember ever being told I couldn't read a book I found around the house -- and there were a lot of books around our house; still are.  There was probably a time or two that I was told something like, 'you might find it a bit much, try this first'.  And my mother dragged me into the grown up section of the library in 7th or 8th grade. .  .well, there wasn't much of any thing left I hadn't read in the 'children's' section anyway.  She basically pointed me to books she'd read and thought I'd like.  She knew the librarian wouldn't let me check out anything questionable anyway! :)
