One time I accidentally clicked "logged" when I was trying to go to the next post.  What does that do?

Also several documents (IRS publications) I sent to myself.

For pleasure???  :P

In real life I do income taxes.  Also sometimes teach tax courses.  I like to have the pubs I may have to refer to handy.   And since I now have the Kindle, it sure beat carrying a briefcase full of stuff when I am working.  I've been storing them on an SD card so when I sort I can NOT show them all the time on my home pages.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Magazine subscription and delivery to Kindle

The other thing is, don't worry too much if you go past your 14 days.  I subscribed to something, didn't like it, and wanted to cancel.  I think I was at something around 20 days.  I had gotten billed already for my first 'real' month.  When I cancelled, I got a credit back for the unused part of the subscription.  Now, if I decide to re-subscribe to that one, Amazon will know I've already used my 14 day trial and will charge me right away for a new subscription.

Maybe not.  Depends on the timing of the issues published.  I subscribed to Ellery Queen and immediately got last month's issue.  Then I got the current month just a couple of days later when it came out.  Same thing happened with Isaac Asimov's.

Ann
Isn't Readers Digest a monthly? You should receive the most current issue, but one is all you're going to receive for free.

I have at least 60 books, plus newspapers, magazines and blogs.  Also several documents (IRS publications) I sent to myself.

Considering where she started and where she is now, I think smart business woman is a given.

Ann
Well, she could love the product AND be a smart business woman....

We lived in Kekaha on the island of Kauai.  Well, actually on the Navy base just a few miles past Kekaha, way around the west side of the island almost to the end of the road.  Our house was a stone's throw from the beach.  It was great.

Or maybe titles that are writing and reading-related: like "short story" for less than 50 posts, novella for  up to 100, novel for up to whatever the next level is, then epic and encyclopedia!

Oh, I really like that idea.   If we want more levels the lowest one could be essay and maybe anthology between novel and epic.

And if anyone gets to 5000 posts, we'll just call them Shakespeare.

Yes, I would like one that would hold my iPhone and Kindle.

L

Yeah!  and my wallet and keys and 'girl stuff'.  Oh, wait.  I guess I have one of those.  It's a purse!  :-)

Actually I have several, though I have recently retired some because they aren't big enough for the Kindle.  Why is it that when you shop for purses on line, they almost never have pictures of the insides?????

It's not a flicker like a TV or computer screen, just a single flash, so probably wouldn't be a problem.  Also, since it's not back lit so it's not like it's really a flash, just a quick picture change.  But' I'd guess it's something the amazon people checked out so ask them if you're concerned.  Or go to 'see a kindle in your city' and find someone near you.  See one in the flesh and figure out if it bothers you.

I don't think you'll have any problems. . . good luck.
(I think Colleen's got it right: do a slow blink as the screen changes. . .)

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Introduce yourself! And put a pin on our map!
« on: November 04, 2008, 11:13:30 am »

Good question. The KindleBoards map is hosted on a mapping site called Frappr. I've used it for a few years and it's a legitimate site.

Here's a direct link to the KindleBoards map on Frappr: http://www.frappr.com/kindle

From there, it will offer to let you put a pin in the map. If it doesn't, you can click on the orange "Join" button to place your pin on the map.

Thanks Harvey.  I still think it would be a good idea to have an obvious link to it somewhere.  Maybe a sticky in the intros forum or a direct link in the members section.

It's just a link of books that have recently been kindlized.  Mostly new releases.

Um.  Seriously.  Is there a link on the Kindle boards site to the map?  And once there what are the steps to add a pin.  I'm a bit leery about going to another site unless I'm sure it's safe.

Thanks,

Ann

I had no problem with the Kindle staying in the original cover.  But I really hate stretched out elastic and it was stretched out in just a few weeks.  So I got an M-edge.  No more floppy elastic.

I, on the other hand, would have been happy to stay forever.   :)

One could use a school 'system'.  Elementary, Middle, High, College, Graduate, PhD.

Or Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Undergrad, Grad Student, Master, Doctor.

I agree with the others that the term Newbie is not the best.

Or. . . correlate it to the way stories have been told historically:  Oral tradition, scratched on clay, carved in stone, inked on scrolls, printed in books, e-published on Kindle.

Suggestions, Comments / Re: Chat feature ?
« on: November 04, 2008, 05:50:19 am »
If you see a little icon that looks like a word balloon with a dot in it, you know the person is on line.  You can click that icon and send them a personal message.  Not quite chat, but close.

I would think -- don't know for sure -- that if you list a chat name in your profile that there'd be a link there so people could ping you.  I notice there's slots to enter aim, msn, and icq at least.

Well......   I'll be testing it myself for the first time in about 3 weeks...   I'm not worried about it per se but the thought is at the back of my mind that it could happen every once in a while.

If you're truly concerned, ask that they hand check it.

'Course, this'll slow up your progress through security because besides just turning it on and showing that it works you'll probably have to explain what it is and HOW it works and buy a book just to prove you can.  :)

I wanted one when I first saw them. . .but wanted to do some research.  When the price came down in May I accelerated my researching by checking out the "See a Kindle" forum.  Also looked at Sony's reader which is actually cooler looking, but the Whispernet sold me.  Plus books are generally cheaper with Kindle.  Since I also had $25 in a gift cert to spend I decided the time was right and ordered at the end of June.  Got it by the 4th of July and had it for the trips I did in the summer.

I read -- in the Post I think -- that it's a company wide thing.  (the Starbuck's free coffy, that is.)  Can't hurt to try.  Wonder if I can get Hot Chocolate.

I'm just about to get in the shower and then go vote and go to the grocery store after that.  My husband left for work around 7:45, planning to go vote first.  He said there was no one in line. . .called me withing 15 minutes saying he was done.  'Course, MANY MANY folks in Arlington work in DC so they may have voted absentee.  Plus some have flex hours and start work at 6 (which is when the polls open) but get off at 4.  I think it'll be busier at the end of the day.

My amazement is that there is NOTHING on TV tonight but election coverage, at least on the major networks.  It's not like they can even say anything until the polls close in CA.  I mean, it's going to be 10 or 11 before there's useful info.  Seems in the past they had the usual line up of shows, but had headers that ran across with updates. Ah well!  That's why I have a Kindle . . . . .
