Writers' Cafe / End of the year book launch - November or December?
« on: March 15, 2016, 09:23:20 am »
I'm launching the first book of a new series the end of this month (March 29th).  I'm working on the second book now and if all goes according to plan, it'll be out in July.  If I can keep to my schedule, the third book will be ready to release by mid-November.  It's unlikely I could have it ready much sooner than that.  With luck I could potentially shave a week or two off the schedule, but I don't know that for sure.

So my question is, when should I release that third book?  Assuming my schedule holds, I'll have the finished product, cover, formatting, everything all ready to be released anytime after November 14th (Monday of the week before Thanksgiving).  Whatever date I pick, I'll pick it well ahead of time, so I'll be able to set up promo plans in advance, so that doesn't factor into my decision.

Do I release it that week (or sooner, if I can shorten the schedule), basically on whatever the earliest possible date it's ready to go?
Or the next week, on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving?
On Black Friday?
Cyber Monday?
Or wait until December and release it a couple of weeks before Christmas?
Or Christmas week?

I can see logical reasons for any of those choices, but I'm curious what the collected wisdom of Kboards thinks about holiday-time releases.

Thanks!

As I udnerstand it, referencing a song title is no problem, legally.  It's using the lyrics that will get you sued.

Personally, I find cutesy renamings (such as using Switter instead of Twitter for example) to be annoying.

I do, too.  It instantly pulls me out of the story when an author does that.

My WIP has a couple of British characters, and I need a little help with some expressions:

Let's start with "shagging".  Is that equivalent to the f-word, or is it not quite as strong as that?  The context is, the character is thinking about a girl, and if he were American, I'd use "screw" for the scene I'm writing now.

How about "wanker" ?  How bad is that?  If you use it in conversation about someone you hate, is it as bad/offensive as calling them an m-f'er?  Or an a-hole?  Or just a jerk?

Finally, what would be a derogatory term that an Englishman (the character is well-educated but working class and in a foul mood at this point in the story) would use to insult someone who's Irish?

This is a more lighthearted book, and I want to be sure I'm not unknowingly throwing around offensive language without meaning to.

Thanks in advance!

Colleen worked me with on my Dream Series books (complete reformat for paperback and ebooks).  She was incredibly easy to work with, and the books look amazing.  I'll second everyone else here who is recommending her!

Writers' Cafe / Thinking of making book #2 in the series free
« on: December 28, 2015, 06:15:11 am »
So I've been wondering about the wisdom of making the second book in my Dream Series perma-free the last few days.

Right now, book #1 is free, book #2 is $0.99, #3 is $2.99 and the rest (4-10) are $3.99.

The reviews are better than book #1, and it starts faster (all the setup work for the character, her family, etc is already done).  And I've had enough readers pick it up first and say that they were able to get right into the story and understand what was going on despite not having read the first one.

Any thoughts/advice on this?  I feel like there's probably a downside I'm not seeing to doing this.

If I did make #2 free, would I be better off leaving #3 at $2.99 or lowering it to $0.99?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Writers' Cafe / Re: Help with a book in KU?
« on: December 28, 2015, 06:00:04 am »
Thanks for all the advice!

I talked her into using the Select free days and set up some promos for her, so hopefully that'll get some eyes on the book.

Another question: are there any promo sites/services that are specifically aimed at Kindle Unlimited?  I know there are plenty of FB groups, but I'm thinking there must be some dedicated promo services just for KU out there somewhere.

Writers' Cafe / Help with a book in KU?
« on: December 24, 2015, 03:02:30 pm »
I'm posting this for a good friend who's not into basically any social media.  I helped her get her book up on KDP, and I've been doing what I can to help with promotion, but since I'm not in KU myself, I'm at a loss about what the next steps should be.

So her book is science fiction, 80,000 words, a series of interconnected stories.  Professional cover, well-written (I think so, anyway).  She chose to go Select partly just because it was easier than going wide to begin with.  She only has the one book, and she won't have anything else ready to go for at least 4-6 months (or maybe 8-10).

I've done some tweeting and posting on FB groups for her, and I've done a couple of ads (Bknights, etc), etc, but no results at all.  Zero pages read.

I haven't advised her to use any of the KDP promo options yet (Countdown, free days), partly because I haven't used them myself and so I don't know how best to use them; partly because she doesn't want to run a sale or give it away for free (which I've tried to get her to do, just to get some traction, but no luck so far).

It's priced at $2.99 right now.

Any advice on where/how to promote the book to get some borrows and pages read in KU?  Any other general advice?  The book is: "Posh Bytes: BeautyWorld Tales of Whimsey & Woe" by C. Rose"

Thanks in advance!  And merry christmas!

This week, we're going into the past - I'm asking authors to share a couple of paragraphs from the oldest story of theirs that they can dig up.  Not their first published story, but something from before that, something unpublished, something from high school, something from 20 years ago if you've got it!
