Writers' Cafe / Re: Tips on writing First Person narratives?
« on: December 09, 2015, 07:42:38 am »
One thing to be aware of if you're writing the whole story from one character's first person POV is that sometimes you'll run into difficulties when there's information you want/need the reader to have, but that your viewpoint character isn't aware of.

Sometimes you can get around that by having another character tell your MC about it, or having the MC see a story int he news, etc., but that has to be handled well.  Sometimes you'll have to cut out something you really want to do because of the limitation of the viewpoint you've chosen - I've had to do that occasionally with my books.

Writers' Cafe / Re: My new writing theory: raid the spam folder
« on: December 07, 2015, 09:18:28 am »
Here's an idea: A very cynical older English lady gets several emails from the FBI threatening to come and arrest her if she does not pay for the transfer certificate to move her $50million from the Nigerian Compensation Scheme for a scam she was never fooled by, they are coming to arrest her. They even tell her not to 'try anything funny' because they know where she lives.

Now, this lady, being cynical tells them in no uncertain terms that the FBI have no jurisdiction in the UK so they can pee off.

The story goes on to tell how two men in black, purporting to be FBI agents turn up on her doorstep...

Love it!

My spam-inspired novel will have to be about a guy who, bored with his day job, decides on a whim to become a dentist and sets up a practice out of his home, buying equipment from the dental supply companies that keep sending him ads for discount dentistry equipment.

(I have no idea how I got on the mailing list for dental equipment suppliers.  I don't even like GOING to the dentist, forget about ever wanting to BE one!)

Writers' Cafe / Re: What Do I Do With a 40,000 Word Story?

OK, I think I'm seeing a consensus here for calling it a novel and pricing it at $2.99.  I can get behind that.

Now I just have to finish the thing!

Writers' Cafe / What Do I Do With a 40,000 Word Story?
« on: November 02, 2015, 08:04:59 am »
I was picturing my new WIP as a novel that would come in somewhere around my previous novels (80-100K words), but as I write it, I'm realizing there's not enough in this story/idea to get there.  I think that at 35-40K words, it'll end up being a quick, fun, satisfying read (I hope so, anyway!), but I can't see any good way to get it to novel length.  I'd have to do a lot of padding, which won't be satisfying to readers (or to me), or make some major changes to the story (which would weaken it; I think what I've got works very well as it is).

So if I have a (again, hopefully!) good, engaging story that's 40,000 words long, what do I do with it?  How do I pitch it to readers?  It's not a serial (there's a definite ending, no cliffhanger), and it's not a short story, but it's not a novel, either.  There's plenty of room for the MC to have further adventures at the end of this story, so I can write more about her, but at the moment I don't have any ideas at all for what happens to her next.  If I did, I'd just plow ahead with that and put a second story together with this one and I'd have a novel-length book.

So what's the best approach here?

Writers' Cafe / Re: Mummy and Daddy?
« on: October 11, 2015, 08:04:04 pm »

Just like with the first Harry Potter, there were a bunch of readers that were unhappy with changing the title for the American market. It implied that American readers wouldn't understand the Philosopher's Stone and had to have it dummed down.

It wasn't implied.  They pretty much came out and said it directly.

Count me among the unhappy readers.  Of course American readers won't know what the Philosopher's Stone is, IF YOU DON'T FREAKING TELL THEM!

This month I got on my knees in thanks when they took my Trilogy Edition Box Set (the bright green one below). I reduced it to 0.99 for 5 days (ends tomorrow) from $5.99.

But.... Not for US - they only wanted to promote it in UK, CA, AU and India.

I've never heard of this.  I didn't know they would pick and choose which countries they'll run your ad in.

I ended my series at ten books.  Realistically, I could probably come up with one or maybe two more ideas for the main character that would justify additional books, but I can't see writing another ten+ books starring her.

From Dream Student - the heroine has just woken up with the mother of all hangovers:

I need aspirin.  And then I need to vomit.  And then I need to die.  That might be the wrong order.

Today's question is all about point of view - why do authors choose a particular POV, and what does that add to the story...
