Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Kindle (Voyage) Update - 3/4/2020?
« on: May 23, 2020, 06:35:00 am »
Thank you for the info.

I did check out the font menu. It didn't look like much changed.

I guess we really don't own our Kindles. Amazon can just change the OS without asking. It could almost be an Apple product. ;)

You donít have to update either Mac or iOS. Just toggle it over to no automatic updates. Just like Windows.

Apple devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod...) / Re: Kindle app and Iphone
« on: February 04, 2020, 08:01:21 pm »
Over the past 10 years, I have regularly used both Android phones and iPhones about equally. Iíve never noticed any difference in performance with the Kindle app. I agree that Moon+ is an excellent e-book reader, one Iíve used for years. I have used Marvin on the iPhone, and while it is quite serviceable itís not quite up to the level of Moon+.

Speaking of discussions, I go to a regular lunch with some retired programmers that I know, and half of us own iPhones and half of us own Android phones. Iím the only one that owns both. I sometimes get the feeling that they would just as soon I stayed out of the discussion, because Iíll take either side. And sometimes both sides in the same conversation.

Apple devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod...) / Re: iOS 13
« on: September 21, 2019, 05:43:01 pm »
I have been using iPadOS 13 beta for about two months now. I didnít put iOS 13 beta on my iPhone, because thatís a critical usage point.

It is a significant update. I have not made up my mind about dark mode yet, but Iím going to keep giving it a try out for another week or so on the iPhone. The keyboard gesture mode works better than I thought it would. Mail and Reminders have both gotten nice improvements. I like the new Undo gesture mode.

The Voice Control mode is great, as long as you donít have anyone else talking while you use it (or the TV on). it seems as if you can do just about every function by voice now, even tapping buttons.

I miss Force Touch. It will take me a long time to get used to long pressing instead. Iím a creature of habit.

Not Quite Kindle / Re: Hearing Aid Advice

The Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid Act goes into effect next year. It is expected to lower the cost of hearing aids significantly. Iím already starting to see pre-announcements of much less expensive models with similar specs as the prescription ones.

The Book Corner / Books in public domain

The New York Public Library says as many as 80% of all books published between 1924 and 1964 are in the public domain, if this article is to be believed.

Not Quite Kindle / Re: What are you binge-watching?

I binge-watched the second, third, and fourth seasons of Lucifer in the last two weeks. I see that it got picked up for a fifth season, but the fourth season finale wouldíve been just fine as a series finale, IMHO.

I liked it a lot. I have the ebook, but havenít got around to it yet. Now itís at the top of the list.

So am I.  I have figurative fingers crossed.

Anything Else Amazon / Re: Moving away from Alexa
« on: April 26, 2019, 10:37:45 pm »
I believe it does matter that much. Personal information gathered by companies will be used for their benefit, not yours.  Their primary purpose is not providing a service to you, it's maximizing value for their shareholders regardless of consequences to customers.  And the information they have on you seems to be routinely accessed by hackers.

Anything Else Amazon / Moving away from Alexa
« on: April 25, 2019, 06:43:25 pm »
I am slowly moving away from using Alexa at my house. I have three Echoes in various rooms, and Iím not doing anything with them but I could not ultimately do via Siri, and do more securely. I am becoming increasingly disturbed by the revelations concerning Amazon employees having access to voice recordings from Alexa.  Same for Google Home, I gave up on them a while ago. I donít have a Google Home and I have removed all Google apps/data from my computer and from my mobile.

If it turns out Apple is doing the same thing, then Iím sunk. ???

I am currently binge-watching Person of Interest on Netflix.  I enjoyed the first one or two seasons when originally aired, but when the other supercomputer came into the plot line I quit paying a lot of attention to it.  So I may only rewatch the first two or three seasons.  After that Iíll probably resume my rewatch of the Wycliffe detective series on Amazon prime.

I still have yet to watch even one episode of GoT. Just  not sure if it is something I would like. I guess its the folks croaking left and right what i read about that turns me off. Maybe one day. At least if I do and I actually do like it, I'll  have them all lined up to binge.  8)

The graphic violence turned me off pretty quickly. I think I lasted for three episodes then gave it up.

I have not had that problem with my iPhone 6. Just curious, why are you using iOS 9 and not upgrading?

The Book Corner / Re: Bill Crider sad news
« on: February 23, 2019, 06:05:35 am »
Bill Criderís final novel was published this week: That Old Scoundrel Death.  Itís the 25th novel about Sheriff Dan Rhodes, and a fitting wrap-up to the series. I enjoyed spending time with those characters.

Apple devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod...) / Re: Questionable phone calls
« on: February 14, 2019, 10:09:57 am »
You did the right thing. I believe Apple will normally send you an email or a text message about matters concerning your account.  I find it is generally good practice to go to a companyĎs website and get phone numbers to call instead of using the one embedded in an email. Itís all too easy for the bad guys to spoof return addresses or indeed caller ID phone numbers.

Not Quite Kindle / Re: TiVo anyone?
« on: January 30, 2019, 07:10:36 pm »
I had a TiVo back around 2000/2002. When I switched over to DirecTV, I got the DirecTV TiVo model. I liked it a lot. I finally had to switch to the DirectTV DVR to get HDTV, and Iíve been there ever since. Iíll probably be canceling DirecTV sometime this year, and I will most likely get a Romio just to record off the air channels.  I hope the TiVo software interface has not changed all that much, that was a huge selling point for me.

I have read all three of the books. They were much better than the TV series.

I have been binging on Corner Gas, the award-winning Canadian comedy show about a small rural town in Saskatchewan.  Prime has all six series plus the movie. I saw several of the series a decade or so ago, and I think I may have gotten some DVDs from Netflix.

This show may be the very definition of the term ďquirkyď.

I use bluetooth headphones connected to my phone for music while taking walks. Can my iphone do this and connect to the Watch over bluetooth simultaneously??

Yes. I do this frequently.

Not Quite Kindle / Re: What are you binge-watching?

Agreed on both series. Iíve watched all 5 series of Doctor Blake on BritBox. They have announced a 6th series, albeit with significant cast changes.

Death in Paradise is on my Must See list. An 8th series has been announced, but with more cast changes, sigh. I also have two of the books, although I havenít read either yet.

I am coming to really hate this forum software. It wonít let me block select text on my iPad to make things in italics (I have to do it one word at a time), and there is the obvious problem with not translating apostrophes correctly. I rarely have this problem with any of the other half-dozen forums that I post in.  But I always have it in this one.

The Book Corner / Re: Anyone else skip battle scenes?
« on: November 20, 2018, 10:29:23 am »
I have been known to skip battle scenes in books and movies, particularly in movies.  I watched the latest Jason Bourne movie a week or two ago, and fast-forwarded through all of the fight scenes and car chases. That cut the time in half.  :)

Apple devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod...) / Re: Favorite Apple Watch apps?
« on: November 18, 2018, 07:55:41 pm »
Betsy, thank you for the tip re Pedometer + +.  I got it on my watch face.  However, after sitting on the sofa all afternoon it shows I have over 1500 steps!  Huh?  I wonder if it is counting arm movements.  I can't tell how or if i can change the settings.  Is yours accurate?

I donít think there are any settings that you can change on this app. Iíve had it on my phone for over a year, and it has always been wildly optimistic.

I think this question would be better served if directed to an Apple/iPhone support forum. The people that come here are pretty non-technical. If you are near an Apple store, that would be the best thing to try.

I am currently watching two different series: The Saint with Roger Moore, and The Avengers with Patrick MacNee and Diana Rigg.

Both series are available for free (with ads) via the Tubitv streaming service which I get on my Roku.  They list all of The Saint episodes (~120 eps) and all of The Avengers episodes (~110 eps) with Patrick Macnee, including the early ones with Honor Blackman.

This should keep me busy for a long time.

The Book Corner / Nero Wolfe book updates
« on: October 29, 2018, 03:35:17 pm »

I was running a check in Manage Your Content to see how many Nero Wolfe books I have not yet gotten ebook copies of. I discovered there are 12 Wolfe books I have already bought that had updates.

Just FYI. There doesnít seem to be a way to pull up a list of books that have been updated. Too bad. And they donít tell you what is changed. I guess I will have to set aside some time to scroll through 11 years worth of book purchases.
