So-so for mine - non-fiction but not self-help, FWIW. I've gone free with "Blocking and Tackling" a couple times, usually during the height of football season (the book is management lessons set against Pittsburgh Steelers stories). I'd have to go back and look at the stats but typically it's around 500 downloads each time over a couple of days; also boosted by a mention on the Pittsburgh, PA Facebook page (around 400,000 Likes) so the feeds go to people's home pages.
I just do it every so often to goose sales of the Pittsburgh-set novels through cross-sells.
As a self help reader, I only buy trad pubbed self-help, from authors with wide experience in the field (20+ years). However, I can see select working for an indie self-help book, because if people aren't paying for it, they won't mind reading something written by an indie.
