I have been reading some posts and been finding some interesting information (thanks everyone for sharing!) so I thought I would join the board. I hope I have done this right, as a newbie, please let me know if I break any decorum! That said, I'm here to learn about promotion and marketing and am grateful to any input anyone has.
Background:
I've worked in traditional publishing in New York for over ten years now and during that time I have been fascinated by the growth of alternative publishing models. After having received some favorable feedback from colleagues on THE COMMITTEE, I thought it would be a good opportunity to try out the Kindle model.
Then, with no marketing or promotion what so ever, I saw my first sales and began to wonder about the possibilities. So I published a piece of academic non-fiction on conceptual art to which I had retained the rights.
The novel, THE COMMITTEE, is a murder mystery focused on a dying neighborhood in New York. It is not terribly gritty, though there may be a few dark characters amongst the cast of personalities. An editor friend described the novel as a dialog of old New York, but I think while the setting is specific, you can encounter characters like this anywhere.
Right now I am promoting THE COMMITTEE as a price of $.99, and if you go to my website, http://kemptonmooney.com, I have released previous projects available for free to build buzz.
So thanks everyone for all the great information you've shared so far and I would love any reviews or feedback anyone has. I have certainly found a couple of books through the board that I've downloaded and can't wait to read!
