The first time I read this, I scarcely took in the content, because there were too many words and it just washed over me. So I suggest simplifying this, using fewer words.
I've played around a bit and come up with a tighter version. This is probably not quite what your story is (after all, I haven't read it) but hopefully it will inspire yo to come up with a stronger version.
Instead of
>Rigan, the raven girl, is just one of many half-humans who can transform into an animal. When she meets with the others, she discovers that she is what she is for a reason: to help her animal species survive on a dying Earth and to help humans understand why they are so important. Her kind must first help the rest of their group escape from the horrible people who once captured Rigan--the people who would do anything to understand how these half-humans work. Not even Rigan knows how she came to exist; she, too, wants answers. But the raven girl will never know her true self and will never be able to help the others until she stops lying to herself and accepts her fears.<
Consider:
Rigan is half-human, half-raven, hunted by scientists who want to study her kind in captivity. How can Rigan and the other shifters escape and save the ravens survive on a dying earth?
I hope this helps.
