A new beta reader--I needed a pair of fresh eyes--sent me some initial comments on the WIP, which is at "release candidate" stage. To wit:
My initial reaction after fifty-some-odd years of reading science fiction is "WOW! This is good stuff!" I've certainly read worse from commercial publishers.
...almost immediately followed by another email:
Pray, forgive me; that did not come out as I intended. I meant to say that I think your writing is far BETTER than a lot I have read from commercial publishers!
I told him we had to be better to be taken even a little seriously.
I wasn't in the least offended by his first remark. I knew what he was saying, and from him it was a high compliment even without the disclaimer! HE felt he needed to explain.
