A quick tax question

405 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  duncolm
As a newbie, I understand that Amazon have to withhold 30% of royalties to cover tax liability in the USA, and I’ll have to go through a couple of hoops to register with the American tax authorities and then with Amazon to get round this.

What I haven’t found the answer to is: is the 30% withheld from all sales or only amazon.com sales? Most of my sales are through amazon.co.uk which appears to be a Luxembourg based company.

Can anyone advise? If it’s only .com then it’s not something I’ll have to deal with urgently.

It's only US sales that Amazon withholds 30% tax on.

For my experience of acquiring an ITIN see my blog post here: http://lexirevellian.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/itins-and-not-paying-us-tax-to-irs.html - and it was much easier than I'd expected.

Thanks Lexi, that's what I needed to know.

It'll be a long time until I accrue enough US sales to get paid. I can leave scheduling a visit to the consulate until the first time I'm due in Edinburgh on a week day.
