[Gone 9/21/18]

One of the reasons I love my Kindle is that it has stopped me from accumulating piles of books all over the house. Still, in the years since the K1, I never did the clean out of my bookshelves that I always intended - until this week. My computer room, which is small, has bookshelves on two sides. I want to take out the shelves on the short end of the room, make the room bigger, and keep only those books I use for reference and those I know I will reread. So I started in. Dealing with all those books, dusting, heaving, rearranging.... I've never been one for repurchasing any book for Kindle that I already own in paper, but all I could think of was I wish I had these for Kindle and could just get rid of them all. I've loved books all my life. My own attitude surprises me, but there it is. I have every one of Dick Francis' books sitting on a shelf in a pretty row, and I'd get rid of every one and buy the Kindle version in a minute if it weren't a financial extravagance I can't justify.

I hear you!  I probably won't get rid of my Dick Francis, as they were gifts from my brother and many of them are autographed by Dick Francis...but my JDRobbs and Lee Childs that I kept for re-reading are going.  I'm gradually replacing all of them, as DreamWeaver suggests.  If I get a gift card from someone, I pick up one of the books and use the rest on new things (I mostly buy Indie these days, so I can pick up one older trad book for $7.99 and then still get three or four indie books.)

Yes - it was painful - but I gradually replaced all my David Baldacci and Tess Gerritsen books with Kindle versions.  I knew I would just never read them with the DTB's...

I suppose one or two now and then would be a way to get started, but I'm not even sure every book by some of my favorite authors is available digitally. I did get Herriott's All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, and All Things Wise and Wonderful in one volume not long ago, but I remember wondering when I reread them there if they were inclusive and never got around to comparing them to the paper copies. I will before I dispose of the paper versions. I also got a digital copy of Josephine Tey's Brat Farrar a while back, but that was because my paperback copy had gotten to where I had an elastic band around it to keep the pages in.

I totally understand. I got rid of over 2000 DTBs 4 years ago when I got my K1.... And couldn't even tell the difference. I need to do another purge as I haven't read another DTB since except for school.

I'm in the same boat, Ellen. I recently went through my bookshelves and boxed up all the paperbacks and hardcovers I'll never read again and donated them to Goodwill. It was painful to get rid of so many books but I have a thing about clutter and dust and all those books were weighing on my mind. I'm so grateful the books on my Kindle can't get dusty.

I spend more time wiping dust off my Kindle than reading lol, I find the light really highlights dust which I can't just leave there when I see it. I got rid of maybe a thousand paperbacks when I recently moved, I don't buy many now but I'll always buy nice hardbacks for my shelves.

I wish I could get rid of more DTBs, but until James Michener's books become available (I've got the three or four they have released), I'll have to hang on to them.
