I was wondering what the respective thoughts were on whether it is good to have one more author name. My interests are quite eclectic so I do want to explore quite diverse genres. However, that comes with the risk of alienating my core 'audience' (two blokes and a spaniel, but let's pretend shall we). Creating a another name to write under potentially means starting from the very beginning again. What would be/has been your choice?

I think the question to ask is, will your "two blokes and a spaniel" (heh) follow you from one genre to another?  Lovers of murder mysteries, for example, may not care for post-apoc stories.  Or military sci-fi readers may not be interested in reading romance.

Hence, different pen names for different genres.

It’s possible to segment your newsletter list by genre without managing separate identities. That’s the route I went.
